Not sure this helps, but...I have had the similar symptoms except it was the oil pressure gauge that dropped to 0 momentarily. It turned out to be the oil pressure switch/sensor which was sorted under warranty.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

14 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Whats the normal for operating temp of the water? i have had my 911 c4 a few months never really noticed but it never seemed to go over 80 deg but the other day was sat in a lot of traffic and it went to 90 deg had me a little concerned at the time but went back to 80 after i got on the motorway Thanks Stu

POST 2Original post

dude - chill... 8) you are fine - that all sounds normal. and before you ask, the oil pressure guage you see on the right hand side: if the engine is cold or you are really gunning it, you will see a reading of 5. Once the engine is well warmed up, or you are just lightly cruising (maybe some soft rock on the stereo) it will read around 2-3.

POST 4Original post

Ditto. Normal - mine does exactly the same: 90C in heavy traffic, 80C when pressing along. ~ Maxie

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Guys I thought it would be normal but did panic a bit when i was stuck there and had never seen it go that high b4 i had a 944 overheat (headgasket) so been i little cautious since Stu

POST 6Original post

You see, a Porsche is a special car. It designs gauges that actually provide reliable informative information, and hence they do move. Unlike your Vauxhalls etc that have a "I'm within 30 degrees of my desired water temp" temp gauge, a Porsche gauge actually indicates the real water temp, and yes, this will go up in traffic..... Most other cars water temp gauges are set to not move from their normal position until there is a problem, ie 120 degrees etc....this stops everyone having a "freak out" when the gauge climbs..... It's all good!

Don't you just love German engineering :thumb:

POST 8Original post

just to clarify, my '99 c2 tiptronic runs with the needle in the middle of the 0 of 80 in slow moving traffic where i never get above 2000 rpm... in a jam, it climbs just past the 0 (just a bit past midway between 80 and 100)... the temperature drops again as i move off or the speed increases... my needle never sits between the 8 and 0 as others have reported... am i ok?..

POST 10Original post

thanks... slightly more reassured... half say its fine, half say theirs sits rock solid between 8 and 0 all the time...

POST 11Original post

Mine generally indicates a little past 80 whilst cruising, 90 in traffic, but equally I occasionally see it reach 90 during a spirited blast. Whilst on the subject my Indy commented in passing that he has known 996's overheat during track days, I haven't taken mine on track yet but has anyone else noticed rising temperatures under said type of conditions?

POST 12Original post

when i went to Bedford it got quite hot, so i simply lowered the roof and completed the day topless... :food:

POST 13Original post

Afternoon everyone. Had my 2002 C4s for a couple of months. Whilst pootling along at around 60 the other day the water temp guague suddenly dropped to 0 and the "failure notice" cam up on the display and the flashing red light appeared on the dial. after 10 seconds or so it clicked back into life, albeit at a slightly lower temp than normal (between 40 and 80). Since then it has happened a few more times, i have only been using it for shortish jurneys and havent had chance to get it into the garage yet. Any advice - is it a display issue (as it keeps happening temporaraly) or something more serious? Thanks

POST 14Original post

Not sure this helps, but...I have had the similar symptoms except it was the oil pressure gauge that dropped to 0 momentarily. It turned out to be the oil pressure switch/sensor which was sorted under warranty. Not sure if there is a similar sensor/switch for the water temp, but hope its not too serious....
