The 996.2 X51 intake manifolds appear to be nearly as good as the 997.1S intake manifold which is our favorite we've tested so far.

Weve switched over to using a Motec M130 ecu for testing due to to the better data logging we are getting as well as being able to dial in the tune much quicker.

I assume that many manufacturers, including Porsche, use plastic intake manifolds as they are cheaper to produce and much lighter.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 2Original post

That’s a very nice torque curve. What is the cause of the trough at 5600 rpm?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 19582399

Combination of Varioram (intake resonator flap) opening as well as Variocam beginning to return to zero advanced.

POST 4Original post

Thats some decent power to be honest! very nice!

POST 5Original post

Hey Brandon do you have any similar posts on the 996.1 potential and its maximum outputs thanks mike

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The best we've gotten with a '99 3.7L is 340hp tuned for race gas. Normally they are coming in closer to 330. And that's a nice little extra bit of punch for the nimble .1's. But what I'd really like to do is a 996.1 3.4->4.1L conversion. I think we have a game plan for the heads, and we are working on a 996 intake manifold that is more in line with the 997.1S intake. So I have a 3.4L 996.1 core engine coming in that will be our first 4.1L build and get swapped into my sp996 to get hammered on the track for testing.

POST 8Original post

I figured it had to do with cam profile. The dip is less pronounced than on many of the more stock dyno graphs. Is it coincidental or did Porsche design the air flow profile to go in tandem with the lift programming? Seems to my pedestrian brain those dips could be reduced more with ECU software tweaks without having to go to a more aggressive cam lobe.

POST 9Original post

That is the best news yet! I'll be joining in on that one if things go well.

POST 10Original post

Wow, a 4.1 for a 996!....... All I want for Christmas is a better torque curve/bottom end, as I don't track the car but rather drive on mostly backcountry two-lane roads with lots of undulation and curves. My only problem is bottoming out in some areas where the road resembles the lunar landscape. The only time I get any speed is on Rt. 80, and almost everybody drives with their foot in the oil pan. Looking forward to seeing the results and costs....

POST 11Original post

Can the 997.1S manifold be installed on the 996 3.6?

POST 12Original post

I just spotted this x51 intake manifold for sale on Ebay.... https://www.ebay.com/itm/33612525430...0AAeSwy6poniSA Is this what you need for your 996.1 build?

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 20213540

It's not a direct fit. We need to make an adapter, add a port to the manifold, and then there is an extra 1" of clearance required on top of anything added by the adapter. We are working on a better solution that we are hoping to have available by Q1 of next year.

POST 14Original post

4.1 ..... now that is IMPRESSIVE in a car that weights approx 2900 (I think that is right) pounds.

Any news on the Slakker intake?

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

We have started porting the lower intake runners on the 996 and then port matching where it meets the upper intake manifold. This has shown significant improvement and bought us a little more time. That being said, we are hoping to release our intake manifold before end of year.

POST 17Original post

Is there actually a non-matching step between upper and lower intakes? I have 2001 3.4L engine out for several service items currently - maybe it would be a good time to pull out the intakes as well and do some intake runner matching...

POST 18Original post

Thats cool. Is it 3D printed by chance? Not that it matters. Just curious how things are done these days

POST 19Original post

Quotes source post: 20440696

Speculating here....but 3D printing has really made designing products much faster, more economical and easier. With some know-how you can print pretty complex shapes that would otherwise cost much more if you had to cast them or have to CNC molds. And this is just for the design and testing phase. I assume that many manufacturers, including Porsche, use plastic intake manifolds as they are cheaper to produce and much lighter. The 996 X51 is still a cast piece and you can actually see it, not something you can say in any modern 911 so why worry about that.

POST 20Original post

Quotes source post: 20440919

Interestingly, the cylinder head for the S58 BMW 3.0 inline 6 is 3D printed.

POST 21Original post

Quotes source post: 20442681

BMW uses 3D printing in manufacturing these heads, they are not 3D printed per se.

POST 23Original post

'Using 3D printing' can mean that lost wax models are 3D printed but the head itself is cast or anything else along those lines. 3D printing the cil. head means that the whole head is 3D printed, which is not economically viable with the production rate of the S58.

POST 24Original post

It looks like the original engine was a 996.2 3.6 L with the X51 option, which has cast-Al intake headers, different exhaust headers, and higher-lift camshafts. The Skakker rebuild increased displacement to 4.1 L. What else on the Slakker rebuild options list was used? Pauter rods? Port and polish heads? 8000-rpm springs (I guess that's what 8K means.)?
