Where are you checking the oil level as the guage dial on the right hand side of the instrument cluster isn't oil level but oil pressure...

From what the OP is saying he is measuring the oil on the electronic indicator which you have to do when the car is up to temperature, engine running, stationary and on level ground.

I have found that it seems to be using oil (well 1/2 a litre in two weeks).

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all fisrt post after buying my MY01 996tt. I have found that it seems to be using oil (well 1/2 a litre in two weeks). Does this engine tend to consume oil?
Also I have noticed on cold start up there tends to be a bit of blue smoke. Should I be concerned?
Any help much appreciated.
[/b]
not really, as oil comsumption is a factor of supercar ownership
You would except that much, but as with anything comsumption can vary, it might drink for 4000 then not for the next
although was that 1/2 a litre in one occassion ? which may indicate the level was low
blue smoke, isn't a good sign, could mean a host of things
depends if it hasnt been driven for a while or when the last service was, but how many miles do you have on the clock
regards
The car had 37k on it when I bought it. I use it daily it now has 38.5k on the clock. Bloody worried now about the smoke. As I said its only when engine is cold, parked up for a few hours.
I checked the oil level before adding it. It was a little low at 2 bars. After adding a litre it then rose to 2 bars from the top. Just checked it yesterday and noticed it was now around the half way mark. (rough calculation used 2 bars).
Oh shite worried now as gone to porsche for reliabilty from tvr. Have I bought a pig?
Look, I'm really ignorant on stuff like this, especially when it comes to a 996 Turbo.
Where are you checking the oil level as the guage dial on the right hand side of the instrument cluster isn't oil level but oil pressure... Just trying to troubleshoot as I initially assumed on my 997 C2S that the dial related to levels.
Jamie Yep you are

Mine can use a litre in a 1000 miles if lots of short enthusiatic drives. The blue smoke on start up is not something I get on mine. However I have heard of it on others which was nothing to worry about. If mine started smoking I would probably get an indie to have a quick look to put my mind at rest.
Welcome to the forum and don't fret too much
welcome to the forum,
you`ll find many nic and helpfull people on here.
Regarding Oil Consumption, get a friend to follow you and do some hard accel and coasting and see if your puffing smoke out of the back.
Is the smoke on start up from both pipes or just one?
Good Luck
most all turbo's will smoke at start up. Sometimes never but it is quite usual, but random. I think it depends where the pistons finish up when you switch it off. In a certain position oil will seep past, remember this is a dry sumped engine so oil is not running down to a sump and the cylinders are horizontal. I have read that letting turbo's cool a bit before shutting off eliminates it? I have also seen n/a cars do it and my OPC & Indy say it's "normal"
I wouldn't be too worried about a little light blue coloured smoke on start-up, providing, it cleared fairly quickly once running.
You have to remember unlike a conventional 'In-Line' engine, your 996TT has a 'Flat-Six' or 'Boxer' arrangement where the pistons operate in an opposing manner, often coming to rest adjacent to oil that's unable to gravitate away from valve guides etc. Particularly if the vehicle is parked on a camber, one bank may smoke more than the other on initial start up.
It's just an idiosycrasy of the 'Flat-Six' layout.
