It helped as well with the sound that I sent the Becker in for reconditioning and bluetooth, as well as replaced my "A" arm antenna booster.

I replaced the front speakers on my coupe (no Bose stereo) with Alpine SPS-1029S that I bought from Crutchfield.

I also replaced the rear speakers with Kenwood KFC-1077 which have about the same drop-in depth but bettter base response.

I set fader for one notch toward the rear and have good sound from all corners of the car.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Upgrading the sound system on my 99, and wanted to replace the dash speakers as both were falling apart (cones dry rotted and separated) I got some 3d printed adaptors and was ready to use Focal IC100s, got them all situated only to find outthey dont fit. Appears that the bottom of the speaker hits the dash support brace.
What actually fits? I dont have Bose, so from factory I had no tweeter and will thus require a coax speaker

Crutchfield
's site will tell you which speakers fit in the front dash. They've measured the depth of the dash opening and will compare it to the speaker-mount depths.
CAI has a couple of kits. I just bought this one to try out. As soon as it warms up here in Chicago will try them out.

I replaced the front speakers on my coupe (no Bose stereo) with Alpine SPS-1029S that I bought from Crutchfield. The drop-in depth was 1-13/16" and they fit perfectly and easily. I should mention that getting the hex head screws out (by the windshield) for removal of the old speakers requires a very small tool. I used a mini socket wrench-like tool into which I inserted a hex bit. I did this over 20 years ago, but as I recall, I cut the backside of the speaker frame and used the cut frame to install the new speakers. I also replaced the rear speakers with Kenwood KFC-1077 which have about the same drop-in depth but bettter base response. If I had it to do over, I would get the Kenwoods all around.
Previous owner swapped in Rockford Fosgate speakers into my 996 front and rear and they sound great combined with the PCCM I have installed.
They appear to fit directly into the stock grilles.
I set fader for one notch toward the rear and have good sound from all corners of the car.
Using the stock amp in the trunk.
I put in a set of Focal K2 ES100 KE speakers in the dash spots using a set of adapters I got from Etsy. They were tight going in, but fit perfectly.

What's in the box
With the Etsy adapter
Put a set of K2 Mids in the doors, some JL's in the rear, updated the subwoofer, swapped in a Rockford Fosgate Amp, and with my Alpine head unit the sound is Absolutely Glorious. I wouldn't change a thing.
I am in the middle of installing Focal Access 4"
100AC and can also confirm that they don't really fit in the dash. I'm using the mounting bracket adaptors from
super_paulie
. The adaptors are very good and I'm happy with them, however the focal speakers are too deep to easily fit in the openings. Modifying the original speaker housing isn't an option for 4" speakers. This is on an 02 996 Targa with the original Bose speakers in case that matters.
On the passenger side there is a bolt that protrudes from a beam under the speaker that doesn't allow the speaker to fit. I used a dremel with a flexible extension to cut the end of the bolt. The bolt is longer than the nut that is holding it so there is no structural impact of doing this. You can remove about 5mm with this approach which is just enough to get the speaker in with the bracket adaptors. But even then the speaker grill doesn't sit completely flush and had to warp a little to fit. The super paulie adaptors sit between the original mount and the speaker which is likely fine for most 4" speakers. An adaptor that allows the speaker to sit
between
the original mount and the adaptor (like this one from
spindlewoodcreations
) should allow the speaker to sit about 5mm higher which would be enough to make the grill and speaker fit properly. But I think you'd still have to cur the top of the bolt to get it to work.
I was also considering making my own adaptor by cutting a thin piece of steel but I didn't quite get that far.
On the drivers side there is a similar depth problem but the obstruction this time is with a plastic shield that protects a wiring shroud. Applying a bit of force to deform the plastic allowed me to get the speaker in, but it also doesn't sit completely flush. I'm just about to try to trim the plastic which should be possible but it is difficult to get a tool in there. I had considered trying to persuade the plastic to move with a long socket extension and a hammer but there isn't enough space to attempt that.
I did also have to round off the edges of the speaker tabs to get them to fit through the opening. They are plastic though so this only took a minute or two.
Not impossible, but I would avoid using the focal 100AC's if you were hoping for a trivial install. I got them at an amazing price in a winter sale so I'm still happy with my decision. But going for a speaker that is a little shallower would have saved some headaches. From the mechanical drawing the depth of the focal speaker is 52.2mm measured from the bottom of the plastic where the mounting screws go. The diagram can be found at
focal.com/products/100-ac
I measured myself and confirmed that measurement.
With the super paulie adapters the focal 100ACs are about 65mm deep measured from the bottom of the Porsche speaker/gill mount. For comparison the original speakers are ~50mm deep however the factory speaker does sit flush with the bottom of the speaker/grill mount. I also checked the Focal K2 ES 100 KE that JohnnyOTS mentioned above (here:
focal.com/products/es-100-ke
) and the diagram shows 39.1mm for the same measurement. Definitely a
much
better option especially with the Etsy adapter. So make you you get the right model for the Focal 100...
I was originally looking at the Audison APX 4 until a local shop recommended these Alpine for the front and the regular S40s for the rear. MUCH cheaper option $210 for all four vs $250 for one set, however that is less of a concern as sound quality/ease of install.
Was it easy to mount the tweeter in the front? Also, did you have to cut the Etsy tabs or the speaker tabs? I was thinking I would have to notch the Etsy ones but it doesnt look like you had too.
(I already have a set of Super Paulie mounts for the front and Etsy ones for the rear)
TIA

Good questions! For the tweeters I trimmed the original housing and then used a high-temperature hot glue to fasten the tweeters in place - since I live in the Phoenix area there's still a chance that will fail and I'll have to switch to RTV silicone. It's been good through one summer so far.
With the mids I first tried notching the Etsy adapters but the tabs on the Focals stuck out too far to fit through the opening in the dash so I ultimately ended up cutting the tabs off of the speakers entirely and using an extra set of adapters I had bought just in case something like that happened. Not a trivial amount of work for the installation, but the resulting sound made it worth it.
Thank you for the response. much appreciated
Hoping to hear from @e30rapidic also as his Alpines looked they snapped right in with the same brace from OEM.
The Focals I looked at had a Crossover that I didnt want to deal with but I hear they sound great.
An update for you and else - one thing I found is that on the passenger side, one bolt for the dash airbag is quite long - it sticks out 1/4in above the rivnut. I was able to shorten it, and remove a bit of sheet metal on that side as well with a dremel.
Fit great after that. The drivers side I had no issues with. The area in question can be accessed by removing the right side vent
Just to give you guys an update on the CAI kit for the 996. Perfect fit with the Audison Prima APX4. The kit comes with a CAI made spacer that works well. Sounds better than factory, but I am not a audiophile. Just a guy looking for a perfect fit that was easy to install with the least number of headaches. It helped as well with the sound that I sent the Becker in for reconditioning and bluetooth, as well as replaced my "A" arm antenna booster. Good for another 20 years.
thanks for this. I actually order two sets of JL-Audio C1-400xs as I already have a set of Pauli mounts for the front and Etsy mounts for the rear.
I may return them and go with the CAI as originally intended.
thx again.
Yeah, I was having a hell of a time figuring out what speakers plus mounts were a perfect fit and what didnt. Some guys are pretty skilled and enjoy the audio exercise. I just wanted something that was going to fit, work and last a decade or two. So I called up CAI and got a set for the front and back. Everything you need is in the kit.
Good luck with your project!
