Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Put this on when I changed my oil Saturday, now my oil gauge won’t work.
Any thoughts about how I fix this?
At the risk of exposing how little I know, I did recently buy the
Foxwell
N5303 scanner but don’t yet know how to use it.
Can I reset Oil Gauge with this?
Ummmm. Oil gauge? Where exactly is that?
Do you mean the oil level readout on the dash? And the N5303
Foxwell
isn't a tool I'm familiar with. Do you mean the
NT530
? You can use that to check your oil level.
Eilenberger's
Law of Troubleshooting
-
Look where you last worked
- applies here. I'm sure the spin-on-filter adaptor isn't directly responsible for a failure (or it would be difficult to sell it), but perhaps a wire was displaced during the installation?
Yes, oil level readout on the dash. Yes,
NT530
Foxwell
.
Readout worked fine just before the oil change, and worked fine as I put the new oil in, steadily climbing as I added.
All fine, put the oil cap back on.
The only thing that happened after that was that I drove it. I did not see any wires that could get displaced.
Might just be a coincidence.
The
Foxwell
has a function that uses that sensor to read out the oil level after changing the oil. The engine still has to be warmed up for it to run - but that should tell you if the sensor isn't reporting back to the ECU. I know of no "reset" on that function... but you can scan for stored error codes, then save them and erase them. See if the system works then...
FYI since this forum addresses 2006 to 2012, it is always good to state if your car is a
987.1
or
987.2
.
Regardless, the sending unit for oil level is buried in the engine, generally on top of the block between the alternator and the starter. It has an analog wired connection for the sending unit, through the engine compartment wiring harness, to the ECU, mounted in the trunk under the carpet. From there it is a CANBUS signal that is distributed via the CANBUS architecture, ulimately to the readout on the dash. None of this sounds like it could possibly be affected by work in the area of the oil filter, on the bottom of the engine. Like Don, I don't believe in coincidences but it certainly sounds like some random failure unassociated with the change to the oil filter. What that could look like, I have no idea.
I have had one installed on a
987.2
for 2 years, other than the surprising weight gain to my car, I can’t see how said installation could affect the stated difficulty. Both Don & Harvey are on point, look where you last were. Frequent were the times I located needles and sponges inside patients on the operating table when the counts were off, same exact principle.

I just bought, from ECS Tuning, a Schwaben (by Foxwell) Porsche Scanner 18656SCH to reset my oil counter after I change the oil. I played with it yesterday a bit. I'm wondering if I can check my oil level with it on my 22 CGTS? The booklet that came with it is rather vague. I've learned more from YouTube vids and this forum.🏁🤙🍻
The
Foxwell NT530
doesn't provide a ton of coding capability for the
981
, but you should be able to look at data.
On my
987.2
, I can see the oil level. However, it doesn't provide it in an easy to read format. For example, on the dash it says how many "bars" you have. In the
Foxwell
, I get a number that's supposedly in mm (See
https://www.planet-9.com/threads/da...lling-on-987-2-users-with-porsche-specific-programmers-piwis-foxwell-etc.254209
)
So, you should be able to see that, but correlating that to bars is the challenge... but you could get a rough idea at least for yourself?
Referencing the spin-on oil filter adapter, although I’ve read about them in past posts, I don’t have any prior experience or have any contact with anyone that has either. Just looking for a quick consensus and recommendations. Are they for facilitation and ease of oil changes, and are they worth it? For those have installed one, do you recommend going that route?
Their first version of 958 Cayenne software on the
NT530
used the same thing, later versions had you filling it until it read 200% (makes no sense) - finally - the current version of software for the 958 tells you how much more oil you should put in. Perhaps that will work it's way up/down to the 987?
Mystery solved…and as I try to note in every post I know nothing, this is evidence of that.
Readout showed completely full after changing the oil.
I did not fill the filter as some (Lake Speed, Jr.) suggest.
Apparently after oil circulating after starting I was about a quart low. Added about a quart and now it is showing almost full.
