Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all, I have a Millennium 996 and the wheels are looking really tatty as the chrome is flaking badly. I have been offered a set of Sports Classic II wheels which are used; some very minor scratches. They are fitted with Conti N0 rated tyres 6mm of tread on the fronts, brand new at the rear. Two questions ... :?: 1. Do you think they suit the car? Consider the body colour to be almost black with a hint of purple or olive green depending upon the light. 2. What is a reasonable price? I don't want to rip the guy off, nor do I want to be taken for a ride. He claims they were worth £1800 3 years ago when he took them off a 993.

POST 2Original post

Post a side view image of your car up here with the wheels and i'll photoshop then so ypu can see for yourself...

POST 3Original post

sport classics are the lattice spoke design? if they are they ain't worth even half what he thought they were worth a couple of years ago I bought a set of BBS RS II's off here in immaculate condition for less than £700 inc delivery up to Aberdeen

POST 4Original post

Set of classic sport wheels on ebay for £730, have seen them for slightly less depends on condition. hard work to keep clean and do suffer from corrosion due to the fact they are split rims. Love mine though. TB

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Rodders, hope the taxi is going well. I agree that they're not woth £1800 but I was thinking £800 was reasonable. Hopefully picture are below...[/url]

POST 7Original post

I have a set of original Porsche BBS sports classics as shown in the above photo. They were an original option on my 1999 996 when purchased and were fitted with spacers front and rear. They need a refurb but are not dented or curbed if anyone is interested. Price - make me a offer, I need the space.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks ResB, spot on. I like the look but there are a few niggling thoughts about cleaning and corrosion. As for the price, do you think £800 is reasonable?

POST 10Original post

Hi Bubbles I think you are around the right mark, bearing in mind that new rear tyres are around £500, indeed if they are brand new. Seller has forked out for the tyres so is prob wanting some money back on that....say £300 which means he could expect to sell wheels for £5/600 maybe a bit more. You can get a newly refurbed set and tyres from a good source like Jasmine Porschalink for just over the £1000 mark, perhaps a call to check wouldnt go a miss. And I think they'll look good on your car too, nice one ResB.

POST 11Original post

Hi, 996 wheels are my specialist subject, I've done so much research into this it's unbelievable. IMO you're always taking a risk with second tyres, unless you're 100% confident on the history....so don't factor this into the price. The more desirable wheels (ie. the ones you already have) in decent condition (ie. the non-chromed version) with used tyres are worth about £800 all in. The Sport Designs you're talking about are b* to clean and as such are less desirable (also split rim so expensive to get refurbed), so they're worth about £500-600. In your shoes, I would get your current ones refurbed to the standard chrome finish. A good job will cost around £300 and will leave you with highly desirable wheels and you get keep your tyres (although your current tyres will also fit the new rims). IMO the Carerra wheels look the most attractive on the 996, so stick with what you've got and this is reflected in the 2nd hand wheel market. Cheers, GD

POST 12Original post

I've seen on numerous occasions, the 997.1 C2S wheels go for £500 to £800 with tyres.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I know the rear tyres are brand new as they still have the pimples and all four are currently in my garage. The seller let me take them to see if I like the look of them on the car. The fronts are very lightly used. Getting the current chome ones refurbed is not possible in Europe or the USA due to health & safety rules regarding the chemical stripping involved. I can get the old chrome blasted off but the finish would be ruined and the surface pitted. As I already need 4 new tyres it is a good time to change wheels and tyres all in one go. I think I'm going to give it a miss though because of the hassle of cleaning them and the corrosion issues. My ideal choice would be the standard non-chromed 5 spoke Turbo Is or the slim 5 spoke Carrera III. BTW I got Costco to offer 4 new Michelins (225/40 and 265/35) N-rated for £620 all in, extending their 20% offer if I ordered this week.

POST 14Original post

Your quoted wheel price with the 20% discount is about what you can get from some of the specialist tyre places. Look at Blackcircles, Bracknell Tyres, Micheldever and Trade Tyres for comparison. They will be ball park. Have you got a 2nd opinion on your current wheels? Everyone on here recommends Jepsons (I think that's what they're called?....I've never used them, so I can't give an opinion), but they sandblast them and I'm sure that I've read that other posters had the same wheels refurbed without issue. Be careful with the 997 wheel on the 996. It has a different offset and a few people have reported that the front wheels scrub on full lock.
