POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

https://youtu.be/-ZyBHNn7zZU?si=3IEqfCntyIgFkxzSI’m I'm in southern Ontario as well, and Rob’s comments really resonated with me. He captures the anxiety that so many 996 owners feel around IMS failure and bore scoring. My car is identical to his—same year, same colour—and I relate to almost everything he said. Even after taking all the usual precautions (IMS solution, RMS, water pump, and a long list of preventative maintenance), I still find myself starting the car with the window open, listening for that tap‑tap‑tap. I won’t let it see over 3,000 RPM until it’s fully warmed up. I won’t pull it out of the garage just to wash it; I take it for a drive first so I don’t get the smoke show and fuel dilution from a cold restart. I’ve never had this kind of anxiety with any other car. But the combination of engine replacement cost and the downtime if something goes wrong definitely gets into your head. I’ve seen people say that vendors are exploiting the doom‑and‑gloom narrative. Personally, I don’t see it that way. Whether it’s Hartech, LN, or Slakker, they identified a real market need and they’re filling it. Their prices are high, but given what Porsche parts cost, I’m not convinced they’re inflated. For me, it’s less about whether I could afford a rebuild and more about how the constant worry chips away at the enjoyment of the car. The conflicting opinions don’t help either. The Renthusiast video downplays bore scoring, while other discussions—including many on this forum—treat it as a very real concern - not if it will happen but when . I think the truth is somewhere in the middle: people say it’s overblown… right up until it happens to them. Some days I wonder if it’s time for a Miata lol.

Hah! No need to loose any sleep. Just like any 25 year old Porsche, if you do the right things to it, you have nothing to worry about. Long distance trips, track days and just driving around town. The 996 is a durable as hell car. Just drive it like you mean it and enjoy it. If I can keep my 996 running strong for 23 years without loosing any sleep, anybody can do it.

I was in the same boat too, living in southern Ontario with a 2000 996.1, manual, sport seats, litronics etc. I bought at 135k km, then put 90k in 2.5 years. I did IMS myself and routinely checked for bore scoring. As I pushed over 200k km I decided to sell the car, was in great shape mechanically but there was always an anxiety about owning a car where the engine rebuild would easily exceed the total value of it. That isn't the case for a c6 corvette, M2 etc. I wanted to do more track days, get something faster etc, didn't want to have to worry about oil starvation / cold starts.. Went and looked at a few ND miatas but the chassis construction and generally quality seemed a big step down from the 911. Ended up getting a great deal on a 2018 Camaro SS 1LE, 450hp, tremec 6060, 6 piston brembos on floating rotors, recaro seats, adjustable suspension, exhaust etc. Put 55k km on it first year and have been blown away. I find it interesting that the values of "average" 996s are climbing with the same risk for engine failure. I bought mine for just under $20k, put 90k on it and sold it for a small profit, I don't honestly think the cars are worth the $35-40k that they seem be advertised for. If I were to do it again, I'd be shopping for an early, manual 2.5 boxster. Great driving experience, not very prone to failure and 1/2 the price of a 996.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 20480405

I have limited opportunities to drive my 996. But, I also avoid driving for mundane activities like running to the grocery store with all the talk about never doing short trips. I really like the car. But the fear be it mongering or not, does take something way from the experience. Prior to this I had a very unique foxbody mustang, which certainly is not the same caliber of car, but I used it a great deal more as there wasn't a lot of concern with ever doing crazy expensive damage. Speed and power are really much less of a concern now....I'm old, knocking on 60. As much as I love speed, reality is that with all the laws, you really can't speed - and I no longer have a get of jail free card any more. I gotta say, I have no interest in convertibles but the Miata seems to be getting more appealing as a car you can beat on and repairs and upgrades are very reasonable. I bought my car in 2018 with 70,000 km and had all the stuff changed for reliabilty. The fear mongering does get to you....

POST 5Original post

Quotes source post: 20480250

I understand where you are coming from, and the guy in the video. I bought my first Porsche, a 996 911, about a year ago. It had 155k miles on it and Ive put about 7k miles on it in the last year. I would not have bought this one had it not had the documented engine rebuild about 20k miles prior. But I still worry about things like bore-scoring and IMS failure, (because even with the rebuild, who knows!). But I have come to the conclusion that Im just going to change the oil A LOT, send the oil off for analysis to monitor it, drive the hell out of it and deal with the other things as they happen. Other things being the same types of things you would deal with on any 25 year old/150k mile car. Ive decided that I love this car enough that even if it did have a catastrophic engine failure, Im willing to spend the $25k for an engine rebuild. And I think thats the kicker, do you really love the car enough that you can see yourself owning it for long enough that it would make it worthwhile for you to spend $25k-$30k to have the engine rebuilt if it goes BOOM. I like rare cars in rare color combos, and special editions. My car is a Millenium Edition 6 speed manual coupe, with the special paint and beautiful interior, 1 of only 911 for the world. I personally get off on that type of stuff. I didnt buy a 911 to track it, I bought it to be a daily driver. Yes all 996s are great drivers, but if my car was a silver on gray car, I personally wouldnt want to invest an engine rebuild into it, because I would know that car isnt my ideal 996. I would hate to find myself in a situation where Ive got to spend the money to rebuild the engine on a car I dont really love, just so I can either drive it or sell it. Find a car that you love enough to be ok with putting a lot of money into if you have to, and drive the wheels off of it. If you really want an Aerokit car, find one. If you really want a red on black one, find one, etc... Dont settle for a 996 that isnt your ideal spec, because its not worth that STRESS and ANXIETY for a car you dont love, that you dont feel was meant for you, and you bond with. Just my 2 cents!

POST 6Original post

If youre afraid to use it you bought a trophy, not a tool. If the cost of rebuild deter you from using it, its not serving you. Youre serving it. Dont let the car own you; not driving it is just as bad. Do the preventive maintenance needed for peace of mind. Short trip? I love driving so much I go the long way lol. Cold start? I start and go, keep revs below 3k until warm.

POST 7Original post

Hmmm....I don't and have never driven any of my vehicles hard when cold. I gang trips to avoid cold starts and short trips and do a short cool down, especially with turbos. That's just the way things last a long time for me. Curiously, I use a Porsche-centric shop run by a former Porsche emloyee who basically turns away business by NOT advocating for prophylactic repairs. He says 'Rennlist brings me lots of business' when I brought him a list of Rennlist fixes commonly recommended here. I have to conclude that there is more than a little fear-mongering in the Porsche world....don't think it's malicious, maybe just catering to the personalities drawn to Porsche. <shrugs>

POST 8Original post

Question... What exactly is everybody afraid of?

POST 9Original post

Quotes source post: 20480712

An engine rebuild that equals or exceeds the value of the car in cost.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 20480712

The engine going boom! It is not just the crazy cost but also getting it done. The long wailist, cost in Canada etc.

POST 11Original post

I don't watch videos like this anymore. There is no usable information in them. All of the issues with the engines along with known solutions have existed for many years now. The unknown is your specific starting point. So, make the known corrective actions and correctly maintain the engine and your done! Zero anxiety. There is no fear mongering. There is only information on how these engines go bad. No one can argue that these engines don't go bad or the information is wrong. Bore scoring is a wear out mechanism. All engines will end up with it. When it occurs, 40k -300k+, is completely defined by how the engine has been maintained. Drive it and change the oil regularly and you're good. And check injector performance every so often. No anxiety. IMSB is the anxiety maker because of how it fails. There is no way to monitor it to catch it just before it blows up. And when it does, it takes the engine with it. So, change the damn thing. Yes, 90% will say "It looked perfectly good to me". But your Anxiety will be gone. Don't be one of the 5%(or however many are truly bad) that actually fail. Unless you have $30-50k with nothing to do. Those folks don't have anxiety either. I like to watch videos where the problems are discussed at the functional level. What went wrong, this is what was found. This is why it happened and here's how to keep it from happening and here's the proof that the fix is correct. Very few of these videos about, and most of them are from some years ago when the problems were being sorted out. Sorry for adding anxiety

POST 12Original post

The cure for 996 anxiety ::simple........... warm the engine up good .. twist it to red-line a dozen times.... go home and sleep like a baby........

POST 13Original post

I subscribe to this simple principle since I am not independently wealthy: 1. take care of the basics properly (like oil changes and general maintenance) 2. drive it like I stole it (once warmed up) for at least 30+ minutes and that's easy to do 3. I only paid $13.5 USD (at the lowest point in it's price history) and put another $8k in misc fun & maintenance over the last 6 years 4. If it blows, well, I will have the coolest 'yard art' sitting in my front yard (until I can figure out an economical way to resurrect it) Regardless, I got my dream car. I've been having fun with it and I can't let the anxiety run amuck (ok, maybe a little bit)

POST 14Original post

I am definitely of the mindset that if you do the right things maintenance wise, and keep to the basic 'rules' of warming up the car well before exceeding 3k RPM, etc., then it doesn't make much sense to worry about catastrophic failure. It's like having anxiety about all the other idiots on the road and whether they'll run into you as you're minding your own business out there on the road...could it happen, absolutely...is it something I worry about day to day as I'm driving any of my cars, not hardly. It seems to me that a non-fault car wreck or hit and run in some random parking area are more likely than an IMS failure. Again, if you don't mind your maintenance intervals and do silly things, you make mechanical failure far more likely than it would otherwise be. I also think having a trusting relationship with a good independent mechanic is invaluable. I do loads of my own mechanical work, but it's always good to have a true professional to turn to or to simply 'verify' everything is sorted. To expand on comments made by @steam_mill regarding 'speed and power', I have never been one to significantly exceed the limit. My joy with these cars, both air cooled and my 996 come in the turns and twisties. Though I have found myself inadvertently traveling quite contently on the interstate at 105 MPH. The cruising speed on these cars can sometimes fool you if you're not careful.Give me a country road with lots of turns and scenery and I"m good.
