I have no other receipt to say they have been changed please can someone help as scared to death this is something major or something that could damage the engine what do the vario cam actuators do and what is the symptoms when they go wrong and how much but the car seems to preform as it should please help!!!!

please help me with my recently purchased 996 carrea 4s having read further through last service report it says investigate no acceleration when putting down to overtake. It states that faults found with air mass sensor and vario cam actuators. The porsche garage replaced the airmass sensor but said the car would still need to have vario cam actuators replacing. I have no other receipt to say they have been changed please can someone help as scared to death this is something major or something that could damage the engine what do the vario cam actuators do and what is the symptoms when they go wrong and how much but the car seems to preform as it should please help!!!!

I have had a couple of these go on my 996. Other than not firing on all 6 cylinders I don't believe your engine is in any danger if a couple of these are not working. Symptom wise a lack of power when accelerating and a bone shaking idle. I also found myself stalling on a number of occasions ... in a tiptronic Obviously it depends on how many cylinders are affected as to severity of the symtoms. If you are in any doubt drop the car into your local indy. They should be able to hook it up and tell you if you have a problem with the actuators within a matter of minutes. Not sure of the cost of these repairs, as mine were done under warranty, but the chances are, since you are not noticing any problems, that yours have been repaired and the paperwork lost. Good luck.
