Now that fuel prices are back down to less than a pound, I use high octane.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I know that formulas vary slightly depending upon the time of year, but is there any major difference between the unleaded petrols available for sale in the UK? Is it better to stick with a major brand or go the 5p per litre off route with Tesco and if you do will it be worse for the engine? Just interested to hear others views and the reasons behind them. Cheers geehils

POST 2Original post

Tesco 99 for the last 3 years and not had any problems  Reasons being it's very local so on the way to most places and not heard anything adverse about using it.......

POST 3Original post

I use Tesco 99 RON in my 996 TT and its fine. I also use Shell V-Power as it is quite reasonable and our local garage does it at 5p less than BP or ESSO. Im not a skinflint but there is a principle here!! But you wont have any probs with Tesco 99 SUL.

POST 4Original post

Can you just clarify - are you talking about 95 RON unleaded, or super? First thing to get clear in your head is that (with the exception of Tescos who source some of their petrol from Europe via Thurrock) all of the petrol in ALL of your local petrol stations comes from the nearest distribution point, which gets it's petrol from the nearest refinery. So the petrol in your local BP Texaco Total Shell Sainsburys Asda (and everybody else) is all the same petrol , and I mean that literally. ETA here is a good list and map of the nine current refineries. http://www.greenergy.com/perspectives/UK_oil_supply_chain.pdf What is different when you buy your petrol from each differently branded petrol station, is the additives package that is added to every tanker-load at the distribution centre.

POST 6Original post

Depends how well off I feel and what prices are. There seems to be less of a difference in cost between 95 and a higher octane. Now that fuel prices are back down to less than a pound, I use high octane. Like using shell and Texaco is quite local.

POST 7Original post

I stick to Shell V-Power or Tesco 99 if I'm feeling skint (like now) Clive

POST 9Original post

I agree with Orangecurry, this has been proven true many times, its a fact. Additives are added to make the difference, the base product is the same

POST 10Original post

V-power. All the time, everytime, every car. Taran :thumb:

POST 12Original post

and me.......car runs much smoother at low revs ..and faster at higher revs :food:

POST 14Original post

Shell V Power! I even use that in my Merc (20 year old 300 coupe) bless the old girl! smoother running, and better mpg. And its below a pound/litre!

POST 15Original post

V-Power or Tescos 99 Tesco at the moment though - do £50 worth of shopping in the store and then get 5p per litre off of each refill: I am becoming an expert at coasting in on fumes, spending exactly £50 on the same stuff that I would normally buy for more money at Waitrose), and then brimming the tank!
