I'man avid snowboarder leaving my 4x4 SUV behind for the Cayman, my first P-car. I have a photo of a Cayman driving in the snowas my screen saver but I'm wondering how realistic it is for me to think I can/should actually take this past the fun dry roads into the snow, with chains and roof rack of course. Any thoughts based on your experiences?
As with a Boxter, proper snow tires turn this Gator into a Polar bear! You will look for excuses to drive it in the snow...(I have out fitted my past 911 & Boxster withblizzaks) The Boxster was the most fun!
Four (no more no less ; -) snow tires do the trick. They'll turn any relatively balanced car into a real blast in winter. Avoid deep stuff (of course) and select the proper tire for the type of winter conditions you normally drive in. Some tires are optimised for packed snow, some for ice. In KC we get more ice than snow, hence I run Blizzaks WS-50s on my Miata.
Do not even think that M&S rated tires are the way to go, the sidewall has to have the 'Mountain and Snowflake' symbol.

Last set for me were Blizzak LM22 - - been great for NJ snow - ice - slush mix.....
I live in sunny Southern California andget to Big Bear in 1 1/2 hours or Mammoth in about 5 1/2 (mayber quicker now
maybeonce or twice a month. 95%of the wayand most of the time there's not even snow or ice even on the road but if you get lucky and catch a storm.....
I ordered mine with 19' sport design wheels. Given that it's for such a small amount of low speed driving could I have gotten away with 18' wheels with standard tiresplus chains? I think I know the answer to driving on low-profiles....
Serious follow-up question ...
I'm talking about taking my new baby into the french alps in January, the plan would be to drive to Chamonix or Bourg St Maurice(both fairly low, under 4000 Ft), possibly leaving the car there rather than taking the car upany more 'serious' roads.
I normally drive in the UK or Ireland in areas where 'snow is something you see on holidays' ... and I don't want to buy winter tires if I'm never going to see snow.
If I'm staying on 'freeways'/motorways the whole time do I need winter tires or can I get away with the stock tires I received on the shipped car?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

aren't the stock tires performance summer tires?
if so, I believe even dry cold roads are problems for the tires. I was told that when the outside temperature is below 40F, summer tires don't perform well...
Carbon; You will have to stop in an say hi on your way to Mammoth, as I live in the high desert which you may pass through on the way...
