I have no maintenance history for it (20k miles, was a lease, looks very clean).

Yomi, what specifically are the issues you have and what do you feel you are "getting the run around" on?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I spent about a month shopping the 996 market before finally landing on a car. During my search I found that most cars are worth what buyers are willing to pay. Some are way over priced by my standards. It all comes down to your budget.
A couple of immediate questions come to mind:
What condition is the C4S in?
How many owners has it had?
Do you have any prior maintenance history available?
Have you had a PPI done?
Are you walking into the purchase knowing that you have to spend $xxx on immediate maintenance or repairs?
Thanks for your reply so quickly.
the car is in pretty good shape. on a scale from 1 to 10 10 being the best its a 8. However is does have a few issues. It has a cracked windshield, scuffed wheels can be fixed and has a strong smell of Antifreeze. No PPI has been done yet wont let that happen til price is negotiated which I am ok with. I think the place that has it has some play room.
I would be weary of "locking" in a price prior to a PPI. If the PPI comes back with major issues you may be hard pressed to renegotiate the price.
I would get it within your ballpark comfort zone with the contingency being the PPI this if it needs work you can take that off the top.
Windshield = $$$
Leaking coolant tank = $$$
Refurbing the wheels = $$$
Not knowing what else the seller has ignored = $$$$$$$$$
That price is high for a car with issues.
You should be able to find one with much fewer issues for similar or less money. There are 2 2004 C4S CPO cars on Porsche site.

Why buy one for $34k when you can get a CPO for for the same money.
Having just recently bought a 04 C4S CPO (first Porsche), these threads can be painful since most people only post when they made a particularly good deal. There are great deals out there, but the link Optical TDI posted was helpful to get a better feel for what asking prices are (admittedly that's what they're
asking
, not what they'll get).
I'm afraid when I bought mine I didn't know how important maintenance history was, and am getting the runaround from the dealer now that they have my money. I had a PPI done by a reputable independent Porsche shop, but now I keep thinking about all the tests I should have asked for. At least it's not a Ferrari.
Actual issues? None at all. I like my new car
I have no maintenance history for it (20k miles, was a lease, looks very clean). The dealer is indicating they have seen records, but they're not letting me see them. They're asking why I need them.
At least one time *before* I bought a used car I called around to various dealers in the area the car had spent some time and spoke with someone at the dealer, maybe the receptionist, maybe someone in service and asked what services the car had had at that dealer. I supplied the VIN and I was then told something like "brake fluid flush/bleed Oct 2008" and so on.
If I were you I'd just try to call the dealer and bypassing the sales department see what you can learn.
If the dealer balks, asks you 'why' reply so you can see what services were done when so you have some idea of when to bring the car in for servicing. If you still get pushback ask the dealer the service manager or even the salesmanager then where he would advise you to take the car for further servicing, cause this dealer doesn't seem to be overly interested in helping you keep your vehicle properly serviced.
Sincerely,
Macster.
