The mechanic I use changed it in under an hour, marking bolt positions before removal removes the necessity for geo set up doing (mine was spot on when checked a month after fitting).
Leading evidence: 'Check month' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). My 718 Spyder has had both PADM mounts replaced already, the first one went at 4500 miles on the way back from the OPC I bought it from, the second went at 9500 miles and I had a proper fight with my local OPC to get it fixed.
Outcome qualification: Negation, uncertainty or missing explicit repair resolution overrides the raw extraction signal.

Mine had one unit failed so the previous owner replaced both just in case.

Mine went on my last (used) 718 GT4 at about 7,500 miles, on Buttertubs Pass on the way up to a 4 day drive in Scotland.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

OPC has to remove the lower triangle, and whilst they may not directly touch your toe or camber adjusters, there will be referred change based on movement in this area as it is a stress/bracing part.

I’ve heard a few times that these mounts ‘fail to stiff’ as in when they fail, they go to their stiffest setting however the mounts work with an electro magnet where the voltage increases with increased RPM therefore stiffening the mount.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Just got my 718 GT4 back from its 2 year inspection service. It has covered 6200 miles.
Started tonight and it has thrown up a PADM fault on the dash.
Has anyone had anything similar?
Car seems far to fresh for this to happen.
Thanks
Yep, had an adaptive mount go on mine a while back, probably when it had less miles on it than yours. They go when the internal coil breaks down, they're well known for it on 718s and 911s.
Back to the OPC for a warranty claim.
Treat these along with the PSE valves as a perishable items. It's not 'if' it's 'when' they let go and by all accounts the timing/longevity is unpredictable.
Aren't the Dynamic Engine Mounts made by Lucas? Enough said.
I think you can, but you'd need to mess with the car's coding/ECU to tell it they're not there?
On a 2yr old GT4 I'm not sure I'd be tinkering like I would on an out of warranty Cayman S, for example.
Thanks guys.
I have Porsche assistance collecting the car tomorrow and leaving me a curtesy car.
My OPC cant look at it until the end of May so this is an attempt to hurry them along as I am sure Porsche will not want to pay for a hire car for 6 weeks,
Must say i'm a bit disappointed something so expensive has bit the bullet so soon.
Plus 1 for an early life failure here. My first 718 Spyder threw this fault at 5000 miles and less that 1 year old. All sorted under warranty quite quickly. I think they are a touch delicate.
I had same failure on my 718 Spyder yesterday - just as the mileage hit 5000! My previous 718 BGTS suffered two failures within 10000 miles. To say that I am unimpressed is an under statement! OPC cannot deal with it until end of May - but car can still be driven.

I had this twice when i had my 718 Spyder the second was as i was driving home from the first repair and that was less then 2k on the clock. Had to wait 3-4 weeks for the part each time. Can be driven, but i was not overly impressed.
They just ain’t built as they use to be lol!
To be fair I rather have this as a problem on modern Porsches than the engine failures of the 9x6 and 9x7.1

I would like to use it a evidence that the mountings are not fit for purpose in the future.
It's just one of those things. No point getting all bent out of shape about it. Your warranty will cover it no problem and you can bet Porsche will be looking at developing the part if so many are failing. You get an equivalent car to use and abuse whilst your warranty work is done and you can even drive yours with the fault with no issues.
Yes , it's a teeny bit annoying but look at the bigger picture , life's too short.

Yeh right like the m96/97 engine more likely an independent will come up with a solution!
WG said:
Just out of interest has anyone who has had PADM unit replaced subsequently also had the replacement fail ?
Nope. I haven't had the other side fail either, and my car doesn't exactly get pampered.
Failures seem to be very random and probably down to manufacturing weaknesses, or not?
Mine had one unit failed so the previous owner replaced both just in case. This was at around 11,000 miles, 4 years ago.
It’s now on 20k and touch wood, they’re still working. It’s spent the last 4 years in dry storage 90% of the time. No idea if that has any bearing on it.
Mine failed just as I swerved to avoid a pothole! My last one failed when I accelerated a bit quickly onto a roundabout - suggests they don’t like sudden movement ( much like myself !! )
I read this thread last night and lo and behold, mines has gone today! Car has just over 5k miles, 2020 car. Looking to get this fixed, what is the best solution - phone Porsche assistance or book directly with the OPC. Ideally I’d like to get a courtesy car until this is sorted which would hopefully also keep delays down to a minimum. Just a pain that it kicks off just as the weather is starting to turn!
Yeh I think it’s easy to convince yourself after the fact I suppose. Some have said it happened in the pissing wet, previous owner of mine said it was just cruising when it went.

The bigger picture is that these have been failing since 2012/2013 with 981's with chrono. Lots of these are run now with no porsche warranty and are expensive to get fixed every few thousand miles. There are examples of people's replacements failing also. This part has been used for past 10 years and your new 718 spyders are still failing, doesn't fill you with confidence porsche are bothered about resolving this issue.
It's enough that people are now actively searching out used 981/718's without chrono

The car is fine to drive, just book it in directly with an OPC.
I phoned OPC direct. The car needs to be in for a couple of days so a courtesy car is essential. They do not have a courtesy car available until 30 May ! You can continue to drive the car though in the meantime - it does not affect safety or any other systems - I’d be willing to bet that you won’t even notice any difference - unless you are on a track maybe ? I will continue to drive mine so no great problem really - the disappointment in the quality is worse than the inconvenience !!!

I had 2 failures on my previous 981 S… OPC said ok to drive until the could book it in, avoid spirited driving and track days. No doubt I’ll have the same problem on my GT4.
My GT4 mount failed at 4200 miles on an 18 month old car, replaced under warranty and the other failed less than 50 miles after.
All sorted by dealer but they are obviously not up to the job…
Ps, there is no revised part number.
Avoid potholes and wheel spin in the wet that may cause a wheel tramp/bounce….
Mine failed last weekend on the way to Goodwood. My car is 3 years and 3 weeks old (9k miles), luckily I took out the extended warranty. Going in next week to be fixed at my OPC.
From my understanding, these fail to their stiffest setting, and the car felt stiffer when driving slowly today. (The missus thought id tinkered with the suspension! )
I've heard of 911 owners swapping these out for Solid mounts due to cost and failure rates
All I can add is imo is this is another example why you need to keep the warranty going. For a proper sports cars it’s a bargain vs Ferrari and Lambo rates, and the OPCs are pretty responsive I think.
Not directly linked to this issue, but I had to have my brand new GT4 lifted onto a low loader at 3 weeks and 400 miles when it just wouldn’t start after a pub lunch. Regulars found it quite amusing - Mrs H didn’t, nor did I, but I think I played it pretty cool 😆 whilst inside I was seriously pissed..
Was diagnosed as a faulty ignition solenoid, or something like that, and repaired in 2 days by OPC but not what I’m used to - my last 3 Porsches were faultless.
I think given that the failures are random they're not a reason alone to keep the warranty going. You can't guarantee one side will go in the 1/2/3 years of cover you buy to make you break even or get ahead of the game.
They're certainly something to take into consideration though for sure, but they wouldn't personally stop me modifying my car or chose to run it without a warranty. At £1500ish a fix they're not cheap but not expensive enough or fail often enough to be a no-brainer.

Presumably the only way it can be avoided is if you don’t spec ‘sports chrono’ or drive a GTS…
I'm pretty sure the dynamic engine mounts are standard on the GT4 - I know they are on the GT3. The sports chrono pack only buys you the clock and some lap info on the PCM
Mine has just gone on a 718 Spyder - appears to be a 'rite of passage' of ownership. 6 weeks till the fix. Advised 'adust driving style', whatever that means. Have recently seen 991.1 GTS, Cayman GTS and GT4s all have the same issue....PITA.
Mine went on my last (used) 718 GT4 at about 7,500 miles, on Buttertubs Pass on the way up to a 4 day drive in Scotland.
Honestly couldn’t tell the difference. It’s only the engine mounts, not PASM related.
There was a parts shortage at the time. Drove it for another 2000 miles with the fault until I traded it back to the OPC for my new car.
As others have said, it fails into stiff mode, so fine to be used on track too. Certainly didn’t spoil my enjoyment of the car.

Exactly - it’s just an irritant; they fail in stiff, and I drive 100% of the time in sports+ purely for the engine map, so I’m sure I wouldn’t be able to tell the difference.
I’ve heard a few times that these mounts ‘fail to stiff’ as in when they fail, they go to their stiffest setting however the mounts work with an electro magnet where the voltage increases with increased RPM therefore stiffening the mount. Wouldn’t it therefore be more likely the case that a failure would cause the magnet to not operate therefore causing them to fail to their softest setting?
Not claiming that this is the case or doubting anybody but I’d be genuinely interested to know the answer!

Plan on having your geo redone afterwards if you've had it set up somewhere other than an OPC.
Definitely this. OPC has to remove the lower triangle, and whilst they may not directly touch your toe or camber adjusters, there will be referred change based on movement in this area as it is a stress/bracing part.

I believe these are fitted to all base 981 and forward with Sport chrono. So a base 981 without Sport chrono has standard dumb mounts. Some people with older 981 cars outside of warranty choose to fit the standard mounts if these fail.
Olderandwiser22 said:
If you fit standard mounts can you code out the fault code that shows on the dash?
Assume so but just guessing.
If these cars are available with dumb mounts the car's computer must have a way to deal with this. They will all use the same computer. Therefore it must be just the programming of the computer which differs.
Thankfully my 2014 Cayman S has now gone, more parts failing than my daily driver a 2009 Toyota IQ.
That these parts are still failing goes to show an inherent fault that Porsche choose not to address. I had one go after the rear side axle carrier collapsed on me (a recall made a year after they knew about it thread here:
https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...
I drove for over a year until I found a replacement on eBay (2 actually from a crashed gt4 with 8,000 miles on the clock, via the US). Over £1k new was a little rich for my liking. The mechanic I use changed it in under an hour, marking bolt positions before removal removes the necessity for geo set up doing (mine was spot on when checked a month after fitting).
It would seem that it can fail in 2 scenarios, a very sharp jolt (as in my case) and water ingress (a small hole in the top of the part allows moisture in, later porsche models had a cover on top to reduce the possibility).
The part automatically sits at the hardest setting on failure, you can feel the harshness over bumps but not a real issue. The warning light will go on its own once a working part is fitted, no removal required. Fixed suspension can be used and comes in a variety of flavours, soft to fast road to track depending on your needs, a straight replacement part and under 2 hrs fitting as the rear bottom support has to be removed to access 1 or 2. I believe it can be coded out at a main stealers, or an independent if they have the correct software.
I have a spare that was not needed for a third of the price new if anyone is interested. It was checked as working on the car and has been stored in a sealed box since.

Just in case anyone missed this. This is a structural component of the car. Almost all the rear suspension bolts to this on one side. So the whole corner of the car. My car is apparently outside of the ones recalled for this so I still have this part on my car.
If anyone is interested in other known faults with the 981 and 991 platform which Porsche knew about and did no recalls we have the following - both of which I had / have on mine
Brake pedal bushing
So on a Hot day if you left the car for a bit in the sun and it got hot enough inside you would find the brake pedal sticking in the down postilion after you used the brakes. Yes this happened to me a few times in our red hot UK climate. So approaching a round about, apply brakes, then release and go to accelerate but the car is still braking. This throws the engine management into a fit where it gives you power for a second or so then decides to stop doing so as the brake is still applied. You cant left foot brake in a 9x1 and apply throttle with the right at the same time. The only way to drive the car like this was to release the brake pedal pulling up from beneath with your toes. No recall from Porsche. They just issued an updated design. If you were out of warranty which I was you had to pay for this updated part and fitting.
Demister fan
This would just stop working. So on a cold day you get in the car and set off. You switch on the demister but no air comes out. So as you drive off the windscreen just starts getting worse and worse so you cant see. You have to open the bonnet, remove the cover for the and also the pollen filter and poke the fan blades with something to free them up. No update from Porsche for this one we just had to live with it.
Similar to many before PADM disabled appeared a number of weeks ago and it’s been 6 weeks to get the car seen by the dealership. Turns out replacement parts won’t be in for 2 weeks meaning the GT4 won’t be going to Goodwood or Porsche in the park as planned.

Why not ? It is perfectly safe to drive - you probably won’t even notice anything different - I had one go on my718 Spyder and two on my 718 GTS - continued driving both with no issues until repaired.

Yep, I had 3 go on my previous 981 CS. OPC said it was perfectly fine to drive while waiting for it to be replaced under warranty. Advised to perhaps avoid tracks days.
The failure alert even says possible to drive on carefully as as opposed to to stop immediately.

I've had 4 go on two 718 gts caymans. One was sold with 12k on and the other with about 22k. The 22k one was under warranty fortunately. Porsche quality is absolutely shocking, I'm still yet to see a 718 model without steamed up rear lights...

Yes that does make driving it difficult doesn't it ! Bugger ! On all my 3 failures, the car(s) were only in dealership for 2 days.
Is there a delay on the parts then ?

I find since Covid most businesses are just getting away with being useless 'because Covid' still. Not sure if we will ever be get back to the old normal or maybe this is the new normal.
Just a update on this.
I am nearly 3 months on from posting this thread and still no replacement part.
Opc tells me there is a huge back order on these parts. They have also informed me that the service department is booked 5 weeks ahead.
Considering the fact I only drive the car April - September, that will be over 1/2 this years driving with a fault.
Thought on how to proceed?

Parts are on order with a lead time of 10 business days. Sounds generally there’s a shortage so it’s possible they won’t hit the 10 day schedule. Fingers crossed it’s relatively quick.

Without being too intrusive is the car on a finance agreement with Porsche (VWFS)? If so start a formal complaint with the finance company aggregating your deposit and monthly charges paid whilst the car is out of action. VWFS will investigate and then compensate you for lost usage. I’ve had the same scenario on 2 previous occassions with a positive outcome

Getting on my soap box again but pre Covid we would not have accepted this right? Now it seems common place to get really really poor service and businesses dont even seem embarrassed or ashamed of saying stuff like this to their customers.
I would be very surprised if the production line in Stuttgart - or where ever these are made - was on stop awaiting these parts. So there must be some supply somewhere.
Covid is over so is the war in Russia now to blame for this?

Thankyou for this
I think a lot depends on your OPC - mine has been great - I have had 2 replaced in the last couple of months, both sorted within 2 weeks of reporting the issue.
The car is fine to drive with the failure though - so just drive away and don't miss out on the summer driving
My 718 Spyder has had both PADM mounts replaced already, the first one went at 4500 miles on the way back from the OPC I bought it from, the second went at 9500 miles and I had a proper fight with my local OPC to get it fixed.
Well mines just got the dreaded warning triangle on the dash.
2022 GT4 Clubsport, just over 9k miles.
OPC have booked it in for initial diagnosis in a couple of weeks then say to expect 4-6 weeks for parts to arrive.
Got my second fixed this week. First RHS then LHS but all under warranty.

Should not be an issue now with lack of courtesy cars , there are loads of Taycans in stock!!!
Guys what’s the situation with these now? I had one engine mount fail last summer, took them 3 months to source a replacement. I now have another that’s gone, and will be replaced under warranty.
Are there upgraded parts available or will these damn things keep failing? Why hasn’t there been a recall as it seems a super-common failure..?
Will the one I had done last summer also fail or is the fix a proper fix?
There is an update PADM mount available. Like, you I had two fail on my 718 Spyder within months of each other (also had two fail on my previous 718 GTS). I complained to Porsche GB when the second one on the Spyder failed and they agreed to also replace the first replacement unit so that I now have two of the updated units fitted.

Thanks, that’s helpful. I need to drop Pork GB an email as I’ve kinda had it with their flaky reliability. It’s really we’re g thin
If this genuinely is an updated part then the part number should have changed. Last 2 digits is version number and versions should be interchangeable. If anyone is enquiring please ask about part numbers and report back if possible, thanks.
