I have to adjust the idle with the hand throttle or it will too fall on its face if rpms are below 1000.

Suggestion
I know this is an old thread but I am wondering if the OP ever tried adjusting the throttle body set screw and if so how did it turn out.

You can turn it to adjust the throttle plate...never tried it though

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Ive added a clutch stop, and things have improved, but im still not as crisp.
Sorry, unless you are into hacking your DME (a custom program would be very expensive), there is not a way to do this.
You can turn on your A/C and it will have roughly the affect you are after.
I would not mess with the throttle plate adjustment.
On the cable drive, the idle speed is controlled by the idle air control valve, engine timing, and engine computer. Not the throttle plate angle like how it is with egas.
Just curious why you would want to raise the idle speed?
I think it would make 1st gear take offs a bit more natural. whenever I drive off after a cold start, the clutch engages nicely everytime since the idle is a bit higher. Once warm, I have to be really conscious of when to gas it without burning out my clutch. Im gonna clean the tb and maf this weekend to see if I can get results. Ive added a clutch stop, and things have improved, but im still not as crisp. one of my symptoms is that the car sometimes feels like its gonna fall on its face or gasps for air if I reverse slowly or creep into a parking space. Take offs at stops can sometimes be a bit tricky if I dont get the revs and clutch engagement right. Perhaps cleaning the maf will help.
Did you try the clutch helper spring thing?

Nevermind
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...-q-though.html
Yup, ive improved things in that department, I just dont wanna rev to 1500rpm at every stop. cant believe how porsche seems to have some sort of comprimise for me with every pcar theyve made. Ill find a way
Ok thanks! I bought some tools at pepboys that should allow me to increase displacement by several inches. Might drop in some chinese made pistons to fill the cylinders. I also bought from them a taiwanese aluminum wing that should help stabilize the car from all the power ill b making.
How come I have a 996 and have no problem taking off from a standing start? Have you been tampering with that clutch assisting spring and removing it? Or is it that some American drivers who probably learned to drive on an automatic car never drove a stick shift until they drove a Porche and are maybe not giving the engine the correct level of revs on take off. When was the last time the air filter was changed? I just don't get it. I saw a thread where lots of guys were removing a spring from under the dash which was used in making the clutch pedal easier to depress because they were all having the same trouble. Stalling the car on take off. They seem to know more than the Porsche Designers. Christ Almighty you are doing my head in.
Dont judge mate. Every 996 and 986 ive driven has this issue. I resolved my problem by removing the ziptie from the plunger switch on the clutch. Now she revs nicely into a takeoff. Those porsche engineers managed to screw many engines so dont hold them in a high place. I drive 944 cup cars, I have 2 sc pcars and ive been driving manual since the 80s. Your novice comment is simply rubbish. Good day.
Cant hurt to try a manual adjustment. I think it has a stop screw???
You can always put it back. I cant see why it wouldnt work.
If not stop screw im sure it wouldnt be too hard to fab something up as simple as a shim or as nice as a stop screw
Thats what I thought I could do. I have a 1973 sc with hand throttle and a 3.2 transplant. I have to adjust the idle with the hand throttle or it will too fall on its face if rpms are below 1000. The 3.2 is not experiencing anything negative so I figured, why not on my 996. I just wanna bump up the thottle a bit. Im machining a couple of metal beads to use as temporary shims on the throttle cable, these should help remove the slack. Im gonna try to slowly turn the stop screw in. this should do it, I think.
Novice comment and mate of yours I am neither. So are you saying that EVERY 996 and 986 you have driven you manage to stall on take off. The racing track seems to be the best place for you to be then. God forbid you should loose a split second on take off at a race meeting. Porsche put zipties on plunger switches on the clutch????? Give me a brake. excuse the pun lol
alright, alright. I apologize for being a punk. now if youre not helping whut are you doing? btw these are called modifications, thats all...so its cool if ya dont respond. Im just another pcar owner who lives in la, ca. Its the car capital of the world. ya gotta move fast so I gotta modify. im positive im not doing your head in. go for a drive.
No need to apologize. I dont think you are a punk either. Modifications I agree with to a certain extent provided they dont interfere with the actual running parts of the Porsche. I must admit I don't know anything about the technical side of tracking a car. I would think that on fast take off something has to wear. Like either the tires or clutch or both. I didnt realize after your first posting that you actually tracked the vehicle. I would not have responded like I did had I known. So it's me who should be apologizing to you not the other way around. Go for it, give it some clog. Just be prepared to change tires and clutch more often than the street drivers.
I doubt it will do that. My intention is to not have to rev the engine for the clutch to engage and go. Im not trying to launch from every light. The point is for the car to start moving when the clutch makes contact. The higher idle should actually save my clutch from an over rev, which ive done several times. The clutch on these cars has no feel from factory so some remove the spring. I cant do daily driving without it, so I added a clutch stop, making the clutch engagement point more predictable. The other problem I have to overcome is the stall if u dont blip the throttle to above 1k rpms. I cleaned the maf and I have improved things. I still think that an extra 50-100 rpm is the trick to a nice clean normal car take off, not a race car launch. I think porsche was trying to keep mpg's up so they took the idle down a notch. I didnt buy this thing for economy so I say screw it. Im going for it.
Thanks! I love Double Reds too. 1665 is my grail watch so it has to be a great white for now. I gotta say impressive collection of past and present cars!
ah not to get away from the thread but it appears that Porsche drivers wear Rolex Watches. Myself I sport a Rolex yachtmaster. I have a super wife who simply spoils the hell out of me lol. Maybe someone should start a thread to find out how many Porsche owners wear Rolex watches.
Mines a white face, Gold movable bezel with Gold through center of strap. Oh and Shark Attack. Wife said tell that guy that I wouldn't have a Rolex and more importantly a Porch 996 if I wasn't married to her first LOL.
I know this is an old thread but I am wondering if the OP ever tried adjusting the throttle body set screw and if so how did it turn out. Thinking of doing this myself.
Mine has always been a little lumpy and idles around 700, but if I engage the A/C compressor, it instantly goes to a very steady idle at about 850-900. It works for me since I live in FL and the A/C Is on most of the time anyway.
Reviving the thread:
Anyone able to raise the idle on a '99?
I have stalled my 996 more in one weekend, than all the other manual cars I have owned.
As noted above, my Carrera needs a bit of throttle for a smooth take off.
peace,

Took a look at my TB and see this stop screw. Looks like it can be adjusted. Would turning this screw to raise it upward cause the throttle blade to stop a little more open and raise the idle speed? Didn't want to mess until someone here chimes in.
Moving the stop screw definitely will increase the speed of the idle by cracking the butterfly. I thought of doing just that, but see others idling at 650rpm and by simply putting on the lowest setting with fan on AC will raise the idle to about 750rpm. That is good enough for me as I don't want to interfere with something that was SET to the Porsche Factory setting.
I noticed that, but the you cannot screw it without some plyers, thus, possibly damaging the threads.
Mine is on there very tight. I'm thinking that an actual screw with the same thread can be a good replacement.
That will be something for me to do in the near future.
I did all the time in my 90's Mustangs and never had a problem. I figure, mark it with something and the car does not like it, simply return it to it's original setting.
