My car is now approaching 100000 miles and from its records it appears to be still on its original water pump and thermostat, the coolant fluid appears to have been changed 6 years ago but the car never seems to overheat or have any problems.

Both are easy to get to on a 996 so can be replaced when they fail.

Suggestion

On some cars like my old c5 rs6 it was best part of two days work to change the pump and thermostat if they failed but only a few extra minutes to do them while everything was apart for the cam belt change so it made sense to do them as preventative maintenance on that car but in a 996 just not worth it.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

11 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My car is now approaching 100000 miles and from its records it appears to be still on its original water pump and thermostat, the coolant fluid appears to have been changed 6 years ago but the car never seems to overheat or have any problems. So the question is should I change them both as a preventative measure or should I not worry about it as they are all performing correctly?

POST 2Original post

Change em I like the idea of lifeing out components around the 100000 mile mark

POST 3Original post

The low temperature thermostat is a must anyway, a water pump would make sense while the coolant is drained

POST 4Original post

Too much of this going on. Change your water pump when it starts to fail. As for LTT, you've done 100k without needing it - why now?

POST 5Original post

LTT, 100 or 100k miles, the sooner the better and the water pump is preventative maintenance, it will go and it could ruin an engine if not noticed and switched off in time.

POST 6Original post

Water pump could happen driving it out the showroom. Although I agree - LTT is worth doing.

POST 7Original post

Both are easy to get to on a 996 so can be replaced when they fail. No need for preventative maintenance here. On some cars like my old c5 rs6 it was best part of two days work to change the pump and thermostat if they failed but only a few extra minutes to do them while everything was apart for the cam belt change so it made sense to do them as preventative maintenance on that car but in a 996 just not worth it. Also it's a gamble as new once can fail too and in some cases straight out the box Winny

POST 8Original post

I swapped to a LTT when I bought mine in 2013 and did the water pump as a preventative when the expansion bottle split 5 years ago.In the same vane when a coil pack faIled I swapped out all 6.Some of us believe in preventative maintenance, some of us don't.Water pumps fail so at 100k miles it's not a bad shout to replace it.

POST 9Original post

For reference my water pump went at 135k miles and 19yrs old.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Following on from my original question how much coolant is required to replace what's in there now? Also which coolant should I buy and any recommendations on where to purchase? Thanks as always for your assistance
