Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suspected cause
The downside being that the pipe has to come off if you have to drop the engine, but if you have to drop the engine then removing a brake pipe is probably the least of your worries.

Hi Barrys, I am going to replace most off the pipes that I can, the pipe from the O/s caliper is bad and that goes behind the engine, and the one that runs along the near side under the floor to the front is bad, so I am expecting to have to do most of them.

Probably teaching to suck eggs but use a T bar to take the nipples out, not a wrench, so that you don't twist them.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi I have just bought a 1978 996 c2, I think this was one of the first water cooled, I dont know much about these cars so I could be wrong. I have very rusty brake pipes and I need to do a full refit , I I am thinking of making them out off Kunfer copper, Has anyone had any experience of doing this job that could advise me please. I am assuming it is engine and box out job?.
Also the caliper bleed nipples are breaking off, I can re drill and tap them as I have an engineering shop. I will give them a new coat of paint to make them look smart.
Any help would be much appreciated
Paul
Hi Paul, I presume you are referring to the off side rear?
To replace the pipe is an engine out job if you follow the original route; however, I'm sure I read on here that someone recently routed a new pipe under the engine. The downside being that the pipe has to come off if you have to drop the engine, but if you have to drop the engine then removing a brake pipe is probably the least of your worries.

In all your posts so far you've made reference to your 996 being a 1978 car. I assume you mean 1998 and have altered it for you in the title line of this thread.
Hi Paul,
Kunifer is certainly the best material and you can get stainless fittings at reasonable prices.

As to the nipples breaking it's a risky DIY job but it sounds like you have the tools. Probably teaching to suck eggs but use a T bar to take the nipples out, not a wrench, so that you don't twist them. Again lots of thoughts on this site: freezing sprays, penetrating oils, low power impact drivers etc.

Engine and box out does not look too difficult, Or am I wrong?.

Hi Alex, It is an auto, I think i will take the whole lot out if it is not too difficult, I have a fuel leak to find as well. I can at least see what is what out of the car, There seems to be a lot of different options on ims bearing.
Thanks for your help
