Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Evening all
I'm looking for a nice early 3.4 996, potentially a tip as I intend to drive this to work a couple of days a week, but easy either way really. Higher millage due to budget. I've looked at a few dogs, rattles on startup (sounds like timing chains noise for prob 5 seconds, like a splutter) and some more expensive dealer ones. My question, how much does an engine rebuild add to the value? Does it turn a 13k car into £18k like for like, or should I not be paying significantly more for it?
New to Porsche so any advice would be appreciated! Thanks
The one I've seen does not show the rebuild spend, but it was mentioned the block had to be split, all the usual after that but no bore score. New IMS, RMS, manifolds etc...I'm learning all these bits! It's a 98 tip, 112k but looks very clean, rebuild and the orange lights, asking £18k. I've not seen any other with a rebuild to compare value
Very difficult to price so understand your concern, early 996 models tend to be slightly more robust. For me miles isn't a concern, lots of receipts is key ðŸ‘
The RIGHT rebuild definitely adds several thousand to the price.
By that I mean all rebuilds are not equal. I'd want to know why the engine was rebuilt, what was replaced and who did the work. I would not pay a premium without seeing an itemised receipt and I'd pay a varying premium based on how much had been replaced and by whom. I wouldn't even consider a car that had a rebuild with unknown parts by some mystery garage.
For any car around £13k I'd also be looking at the state of suspension, brake lines, power steering lines, exhausts and coolant hoses unless there were recent receipts. It's near the bottom of the market now so you could be buying something that's about to need a lot of money.
I just bought an early 3.4 996 off a forum member, it's done 156k miles but had 10k engine rebuilt and strengthened by hartech at 151k miles.
Plus new brakes all round (bigger front brakes/calipers) plus most of suspension
refreshed.
The engine is what really sold it to me and i paid 18.5k for it, don't if i over paid but most of the big bills should be sorted on it.
i don't think you over paid for that, in fact I think it was a bit of a bargain, engine, brakes & suspension all sorted, hopefully trouble free for a while now.
As for original question, if the engine has been rebuilt by one of the acknowledged specialist in last 5 years I would say its at least a £5K premium.
