Bought a Dension Gateway 500, now I want a touchscreen.

Can you use Dension Gateway 500 as a MOST adapter for a double din unit? Hiya, I purchased a Dension Gateway 500 which I haven't installed yet. One of the recent posts in this forum linked this which I had no idea existed: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EUJENGE The reason I went with the Dension was to keep an OEM look to the dash. That kit looks factory! I looked around and wasn't able to find any info on if I can use the Dension to simplify the installation of a double din unit on a 987.1 with Bose. Is this possible? I've never installed an aftermarket stereo before to know if I can use any of the Dension's ports to connect a double din unit. Thanks!

Because you have a bose system - you're going to have to track down a converter for the new head unit to go from RCA to fiber optic. I went with the NAV TV Kit 210. From here there's a bunch of kits for mounting the double DIN in the dash and plugging into the stock harness with little to no cutting. I ordered my head unit from Crutchfield and told them I had the base system. This gave me the part numbers and reduced cost for the dash bezel and wiring adapters. The wiring is pretty substantial - I ended up drawing up a schematic because of all the parts involved. The actual work on the bench (soldering and shrinking all the connections) and in the car took roughly 2 hours. The parts (radio, adapter and mount kit) ran about $1100... Good luck!

Re: Can you use Dension Gateway 500 as a MOST adapter for a double din unit? You can sell the Dennison and pay for the adapter harness or a 5 channel amp. Not sure why you want to save the PCM. I went for a nice touchscreen unit and it looks and performs so much better. Swapped out the Bose amp for a 5 channel and never looked back. Anyone want to buy a PMC 2.1 with 6 disk CD changer? Cheap!

Re: Can you use Dension Gateway 500 as a MOST adapter for a double din unit? I looked at all of the options - leaving the stock amp in place was the least intrusive to the car. I was looking to add hands free phone and a few niceties - not build a sound stage. I barely got my finger tips dirty and all the work in the car was sitting comfortably in the passenger seat. Just changing the head unit from a CDR-24 to a fairly decent Kenwood (bought on scratch and dent from Crutchfield) really woke up the sound quality as well as giving me the little touches I was looking for.

Re: Can you use Dension Gateway 500 as a MOST adapter for a double din unit? My wife bought me a Kenwood HU and the fiber optic adapter for my 06 Boxster S with the Bose system. I watched the removal process on Youtube by 5 Star Audio and it was pretty easy. The tricky part is fitting all of the extra wires and boxes for the adapter kit behind the radio. I would say it took me about two hours to complete. The cost for the adapter kit and head unit was about $700.

Hi, I saw several conversion kits mentioned in some old topics and I got confused on which one is the best or most updated kit as some suggestions goes back to 2008. Can anyone please tell e which is the best (as best I mean plug and play and easy to use) adapter kit available now (march 2019) to install a 2 din aftermarket stereo into a 987.1 Cayman with Bose sound system and navigation? I also want to keep all the original wiring as I would like to go back to the original Bose OEM stereo if I decide do sell my Cayman (to upgrade to a new model) . Regards

Re: Can you use Dension Gateway 500 as a MOST adapter for a double din unit? MOST HUR is what you need. NAV-TV is the usual choice but costs around $500. AVIN is a Chinese copy for about $100. Most people don't have complaints about that one.

Re: Can you use Dension Gateway 500 as a MOST adapter for a double din unit? I went with the reputation and US sales office for the NAV kit. The reversibility of the install comes down to you since you're tying several systems together (Stock wiring, jumper to the fuse block, Ebrake emulator, radio harness, and the adapter). Getting the wiring harness adapter helps a lot (the Metra one for a non-bose works, you end up depinning most of it to leave the wires you need). The NAV adapter also has two leads that tap into the CANBUS - I soldered on 2 basic pins, inserted them into the stock adapter and with some creative use of zipties and black tape made my own retainer to keep them in. All in all, I spent about 20 minutes figuring out the wire lengths in the car, an hour soldering and heat shrinking all the leads on my workbench (make up a wiring diagram to follow), and an hour finishing up the install. A small headlamp, good tools, and a radio in your shop help out a lot!

I cheated - For the fiber optic converter box I put adhesive backed Velcro on the top and stuck it to the bottom outside of the metal radio case in the dash. I also laid it out so I can get to the USB port if I take off the side of the dash.

Works flawlessly. Integrates seamlessly to Bose unit through CD Changer. Bluetooth audio through my iPhone makes my 2006 car seem a bit more modern. Cost was $530 for all parts and labor.
