Suggestion

I reckon you could easily get the weight below 1300kgs: The seats must weigh 50kg with all the electrics on their own (so replace with lightweight buckets and you would save 60kg there).

Suggestion

It does have a few non-essential electronics, but I believe it uses multi-plexing, so the wiring loom won't be as heavy as in older cars.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

12 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So, with the every decreasing price of the 996, and some shitters knocking about with awful interiors, it got me thinking.... If you could pick one up cheap enough, strip it out, make some money from the saleables, seats panels etc, would it be a decent track car? What kind of weight would be attainable? Feasible?

POST 2Original post

I have seen the odd one or two around over the years certainly possible, esp if you get the weight down into the 1300'skg

POST 3Original post

I reckon you could easily get the weight below 1300kgs: The seats must weigh 50kg with all the electrics on their own (so replace with lightweight buckets and you would save 60kg there). I bet there's another 50kg of sound insulation material altogether, spare wheel and tools out, airbags out, inertia reel belts out, air-con system out (pipes and rads alone must weigh loads). If you really wanted to go mad, sunroof welded in place and lose all the electrics and cables. Rear wiper out. Lose the stereo (especially if you have upgraded audio with amps and big speakers) Wonder if you could get it down below 1200kg with a roll-cage? What do the Cup cars weigh?

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

thats my thinking, they have to have LOADS of none essential electronics I would have thought.... kerb weight is 1320kg? thats not bad to start with!!! thats less than a 964!

POST 5Original post

I thought it was 1420 kg kerbweight? It does have a few non-essential electronics, but I believe it uses multi-plexing, so the wiring loom won't be as heavy as in older cars.

POST 6Original post

The black one with the nephrite interior is on Top Marques at £11,995 (SOR with a Trader) and 109,000 miles... Mind you, you would get much from selling any of the interior bits though... :floor: :floor: :floor: Googled the weight and get anything between 1320 and 1390 kg at launch for a 3.4 C2... I think a UK spec C4 was 1420kg with the extra weight of 4WD system. I am convinced 1200 kg would be achievable without replacing panels / glass etc. :?:

POST 7Original post

Wasn't there something like that forsale on PH awhile ago? IIRC it was a 3.4 C2 originally then race spec'd. Also isn't that what Palmer sport have done but to a leaser extent with there JP1 at Bedford? It's based on a C2 tip according to the tour guy speak...

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

hmmm, i wonder if you can fit an aircooled engine in one... ah, *****. emission laws.

POST 9Original post

Digging this thread up, Matt did you see this?, sold now but good ideas... http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/778473.htm

POST 10Original post

I'm quite certain you could do it ... its the bit in bold I'd be wondering about. I keep wondering about a Boxster as a track car. But personally if I was going to spend say 10-15k on a dedicated track car it would be either an Elise or a 968CS.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

yeah something like that would be good stuart... but i guess if starting from scratch, for around 20k you could get a lot more track car for your money... but it wouldnt be a porsche...

POST 12Original post

I think the thing is that if you spent the £20k and made it into a fast track car, you could get some of the money back from someone who wants a GT3 alternative at half the price.... LOJO
