Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Lots of talk lately and of course proof of Porsches dropping huge amounts in price. It was only 18 months ago when I started first hunting for a 996, back then the only ones under £20k were big miles or Cat D/C now look to day with our so called credit crunch and you can see them as low as 11k! I even saw a Boxster go trade at £3900.. shocking, Boxster I know but Porsche all the same. My question, as per the title, do you think the prices will go back up? I do, (or hope) but at the end of the day it is down to us boys as we are the owners.... lets work on it I paid £17000 for my MY00 with FPSH and only 15k miles, now owes me £19500 with all the work I have done. The What-car value says between £18.5 trade & £22.5 dealer (I know you can not go by this due to the present market place)

POST 2Original post

Question of supply and demand really isn't it. Lots of 996's around and their values are being depressed by there being lot's of 997's as well.

POST 3Original post

I hope so. We need Porsch to stop building 911's for a year or so and spend some of that 5bn they recently made making the cars better.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah... they should stop taking over other brands like VW and pour money into paying for intermediate shaft failures <dreams> I have a feeling my answer is going to be negative on this topic. Oh well, I am just going to keep taking advantage of the climate and moving up the models.

POST 5Original post

IMO since it's all about supply and demand when the market turns prices should in theory start to go back up. It's doubtful if they will return to the prices seen in 2007/2008 plus your car will be another year older and you have to factor in the desirablity of your car which will depend on the usual - model, condition, mileage etc. It will be interesting to see what happens in say 2 years time - there will be far fewer 1 and 2 year old cars about so that should inflate their price which hopefully will have a knock on effect to older cars.

POST 6Original post

They are still knocking them out so can't see it changing.

POST 7Original post

I would guess that once the prices have slumped they are unlikely to rise again until they become classics with limited numbers left. This goes for all cars as well I think. After all would you the buyer buy a car that was cheaper the year before but has not increased anymore in desirability? The standard %age loss in value of cars I do not feel will return for a good number of years when the cars we all drive about in know have been superseded buy newer models if it does indeed every recover. If there is to be a recovery it will be driven by use the consumer and no-one else. Just my 2p worth

POST 8Original post

No... Prices won't go up, but the depreciation might slow down a bit. 996s are still holding their value better than almost anything that cost the same amount when they were new - even at £11k for a 10 year-old C2 in the trade... Merc SL anyone...? :?:

POST 9Original post

good point about Pork fairing better than most marques, still, cost to change is less etv etc. Prices will continue down, just the rate that may change.

POST 10Original post

As Wattie said, depreciation might slow, but prices will never increase. 1. 996 was the first mass produced 911 2. 996 was the first non-hand made/production-line 911 (not 100% on this) 3. 996 was the first liquid cooled 911 4. 996 coincided with easier credit/finance deals/company car tax hike 5. 997 model follows on in similar vein FWIW, I believe the 996 will actually be the first 911 that will actually cost money to get rid of. The 997 will also go the same way. Not really as a direct result of the current climate, but it has certainly accelerated most peoples views. 993 whilst taking a small hit, is now, in general, more expensive. 997 will certainly go the same was as the 996 unfortunately. Depressing, but reality all the same. IMO the 911, in terms of mass market production, now puts it firmly in the same camp as BMW and Mercedes in terms of depreciation.

POST 11Original post

Absolutely agreed - supply and demand. Unless Porsche stops making the 911 they will never go up again - however, I suspect the air-cooled ones will not go down.... Autocar had a feature about the depreciation "winners" last week - 7-Series BMW - 50k in 2005, now worth 15k. So we are not there yet, but as said many times on these pages, as long as Porsche mass produce cars, they will devalue like a mass production car, and that will affect the residuals of the older cars.... LOJO

POST 12Original post

I don't think the overall pricing has anything to do with whether a 911's engine is cooled by water or air. There may be small limited groups who have a particular desire for a particular model at any given time but generally speaking the same rules apply to 911's as anything else; Age, Mileage, Condition. As 997's and 996's become more affordable, the choice to a potential consumer becomes even more crystalised. For 30K you can now buy a low mileage 2005 997. Someone would have to have a particular childhood obsession with a 964/993 to pay over 20K no matter what the condition. There is such a vast step forward in quality between the older cars and the newer ones, you're looking at over 20years of development, never mind wear and tear. Considering that most Porsche oweners buy second hand anyway and have never given Porsche in Stuttgart a penny, it probably suits us all really that the prices are coming down. I for one can't wait to upgrade from a 996 to a 997 and I don't mind my cars value falling so long as the one I want is falling too. There are relatively few true classics in the 911 series that will command big prices in the future (name five!) and I think some owners are desperately hoping to have picked the model that somehow bucks the laws of economics. That's like buying 911's as lottery tickets. If you bought an old Porsche and were hoping that it would somehow become a classic/investment then falling prices are not good news but I do believe that there will always be someone tempted to part cash for a prisitine old Porsche that tugs at his adolescent heart strings so some old car owners will escape reasonably unscathed, if low depreciation is their goal. For some buyers, if it's not a 993 is effectively not a 911 and they wont even enter the marekt for anything else, and likewise other models. These concentrated sub-markets might operate to their own rules so long as those buyers are still alive and able to drive, but the main market must continue to depreciate as long as manufacturing output outstrips demand as it currently seems to do. It's a fascinating sub plot to the whole car price crash we're seeing.

POST 13Original post

No, agreed, just factors like production figs behind each amongst others. No, disagree. Have you ever heard of any major engine issue on a 993? Ever sat in a 964/993 interior and seen how they are put together? Big law of economics is supply and demand. You run the risk of pissing all us youngsters off and insulting quite a few others, and you will find that most 993 owners also grew up with the 930 poster on the wall. But you are right the main market i.e. post mass production will continue to follow the depreciate curve, which as you know flattens out after a period of time. Really Niall I think you have the hump for some reason and trying to force a not existent crack between all 911 owners open. Why don't you go on to the Ferrari forum to tell all the 355 owners how their cars are all overpriced and that they really don't have a desirable car that was made in limited numbers and they'd have to find a loon to buy it off them. Come on matey, lighten up and just enjoy your £10k supercar!

POST 14Original post

Chris, is that your own blue 993 at the base of your mail. Beautiful. I love those cars. And no, I've never actually sat in one and driven one. Hopefully I'll get the chance someday to do that, and drive many of the other variants. Do I have the hump about something? Yes. I get irritated by the fact that every time I see the word 996 in a Porsche magazine, the word 'Purist' appears in the same sentence. I'm not joking. Every time. Suggesting that a 'purist' is some sort of higher species of Porsche owner, a more appreciative driver or whatever. I remember when I first bough my car I encountered this fifty year old bloke who sort of sniffed at it and remarked, "I'm an air-cooled man myself!" He didn't even have a car! And he had never been in a Porsche let alone own one or drive one. That aside, I do think that declining 996 and 997 values will push the general 993 and 964 prices down simply because 9 out of 10 buyers will find it hard to pass by a competitively priced 'water-cooled' car with low mileage for a simlarly priced but older, slightly rattlier, riskier car, especially if they can have only one car and it has to tick every box. And to be honest, because I'm the sort of buyer who would like to keep up with the years, and get as close to new as posible, it actually suits me down to the ground to see the prices fall. I'm not sure what happens to the guys who bought new 997's though! What do they trade up to?

POST 15Original post

Hi Niall I do understand but bear in mind Clarkson always disses 911's, and many others say the engine's in the wrong place blah blah blah. There's always going to be 2 camps to a certain degree. I couldn't care less how it's cooled as long it doesn't let me down! But what you must do to balance your own views is get in a 993 for example and understand that these cars do not rattle...ok the glove box has a funny habit but they're not like the plastic interiors that are common on newer cars like I found on my ex-A6 or 3 series. It's not an unfounded reputation you know. The other point is that these cars trace their heritage through the roof line right back to the 60's so u can understand a bit of nostalgia associated with that. I know a member on here in his 30's who's had all sorts of nice new cars, including 996 C4S and the latest BMW 335 bi-turbo, and having sold his 993 has come all the way back again all be it with 4wd. So my views are based on stories like these not some 'old codger' or adolescent chav that can't afford a new 911. And yes that is my blue car, check out some pics in the link below my post count. I'd like a 996 C4S looks fab and PSE sounds awesome, plus a 997 but if I have to have one its my 993. Rant over
