Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

i was looking at a 996 carrera which i doubt if i will buy, but do they normally sound tapy on start up, it didnt seem to really clear, but never got it warmed up properly, and it had yellow calipers, he was claiming it was ceramic brakes, is this the case?

POST 2Original post

Tappety on start up is quite normal , hydraulic valve play adjusters ca empty of oil when car stands for any length of time. (This from the Peter Morgan/Grant neal 996 buyers guide - I'd get yourself one approx. £9 on ebay - or indeed the one linked to on this site though I haven't read that buyers guide) Yellow calipers are a sign of ceramics but unlikely on a narrow body - but you should easily be able to tell if the discs are ceramic or not. Most likely been painted - but then if one of the previous owners modded that what else airboxs etc. (not in itself a bad thing but just an indication there might be other things to check). Good luck - but from your other post I'd agree with others and say walk away from this one - to many alarm bells going off already.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

thanks, to me the brakes just looked like drilled discs, the calipers looked like they were originally yellow though, maybe it did have them when new, it had a lot of options, i would still be tempted but would need to be at a good price, but never mind theres plenty cars.

POST 4Original post

Could be originally yellow - if 1st owner spec'd it like that and splashed the cash. The ceramic look more fiborous than the smooth shiny steel vented discs - less venting radial holes too - you'll be able to easily spot the difference. Yellow calipers obviosly not a reason to walk away but if dealer is saying they're ceramics and there not then clearly something a bit dodgy
