My car (C2 Cab) was a little floaty on the motorway, until I fitted lower suspension and had a geo. I didnt do it cos it was floaty, but it has cured any float.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

12 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

Surely other owners have solved this problem cause I've read enough on here and other sites to know people have experienced this at motorway speeds.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I know there's a bit on here on this subject, generally about front air splitters or spoilers. However I wonder if anyone has any experience of modifiying the suspension to get rid of this problem. I have a C4 Cab which typically feels floaty around 70-80ish and up to 100. This felt quite unnerving on the autobahns as I backed off the throttle a lot due it it feeling a bit vague. Also there doesn't seem to be much in the way of self-centering going on. Maybe this is because it is 4 wheel drive/rear engined - any comments? All tracking etc checked and given the all clear by ninemeister so no worries that there is anything incorrect there. The existing setup is completely standard. However I would like to see about getting a little more feel into the front which would improve how secure I feel on the motorway at least! It's very odd getting into my other car - a bog standard estate car, and having it feel more 'planted' at the same speeds and conditions. So has anyone any suggestions? Would some subtle suspension mods help?

POST 2Original post

how full is your tank? I know its an obvious question, but just in case 911's are at there best with a 1/2 to full tank

POST 3Original post

My car (C2 Cab) was a little floaty on the motorway, until I fitted lower suspension and had a geo. I didnt do it cos it was floaty, but it has cured any float. Its now rock solid at all speeds in all conditions. I realise that doesnt answer your question, as my solution involves a fair bit of expense, but thought I would chip in anyway.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Tank varies I'm afraid! Full at the start of a motorway journey, unfortunately empties as we go.... As regards the new suspension, thats what I'm thinking of. I've had the geo and alls ok, so all that is left is to try some suspension mods. It's just a case of what sort...

POST 5Original post

how many miles do you have ? still original suspension ? modern 996 shouldn't be floaty

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Sundeep. It's on just over 50k with, as far as we know, original suspension.

POST 7Original post

Maybe it feels floaty but its actually quite well planted, you could just be comparing the feel to your other car? You could always try stiffer shocks first, then upgrade to springs or a couple of paving slabs in the boot, lol

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Look, A VW PAssat estate should NOT (in my book) feel more planted on the move, have more self centreing and sharper cornering than my 911. But it does. I want to try a different suspension setup or take it to a specialist who knows how they should feel at 80 on the motorway. If it really should feel like this, then its ***** and I'm buying an Audi. If not, as I suspect, then some tweaks can be made. Surely other owners have solved this problem cause I've read enough on here and other sites to know people have experienced this at motorway speeds.

POST 10Original post

Tim, a few questions 1. What Tyre Pressures are you running? 2. How many miles has your car done and is it on original suspension? - Simon

POST 11Original post

Personally, I don't believe new suspension is the answer. Firstly, does it have an aerokit on it. If it does, like you said originally, check the front splitter. Secondly, does it have any spoilers added to the car (eg. rear) and if so, does it have the corresponding front changes. Thirdly, what tyres are you running? Are they N-rated? What pressure are you running? Have you had them balanced and what sort of geo did you have done? I've heard reports of geo equipment being out, so the car seemingly is set up correctly, when the reality is, it isn't. If you have N rated tyres that are within age (check the DOT rating), then check the pressures (on the inside of the fuel cap). If they are within spec, trying reducing the fronts by a couple of psi, then try the rears, then reverse the psi pressures. I'm convinced this will fix your problem. To be fair, it's possible the shocks/suspension might need replacing, but this would also be reasonably noticeable through standard driving (eg. crashy over bumps at town driving speeds). Best of luck.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Guys. The car is completely standard - no modification, no extra spoilers, no custom suspension. It's all in excellent condition, been well serviced and, like I said, had a geo from Ninemeister, who I'm sure know they're stuff. The tyres are only a year old with 6k on them. Correct N rated Michelins. Tried running them at book pressures, which feels like I have no suspension at all - rock hard!! I now run them a few psi below this which give a smoother ride on the motorway. But other than that everything is checked, maintained and stock.
