Hi there I wonder if anyone can give me a clue as to what has happened to my '98 R 996 Carrera 2 with 60,000 miles. Picked car up today from well respected independent after an altercation with a Hyundai (of all things)Light front damage to my car. After about 45 mins of gentle driving(very wet) I noticed a metallicy sound coming from rear of car. Due to road noise and no change in engine performance and lack of warning lights I continued. After another 15 mins i arrived home popped the boot lid to be met by a sound like a pneumatic drill!! :nooo: This is coming from the bottom of the engine and at first i thought may be linked to the PSE i had fitted in the summer. I have had a look on the forum and the closest thread seemed to indicate a water pump failure and nothing too terminal.Any advice or thoughts would be most appreciated.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Wooahhh... DO NOT DRIVE IT - until an expert has come and investigated it... This sounds like the noise that someone had just before their Intermediate Shaft failed and wrecked the engine. There was a thread about it somewhere (might have been on PH if not here) and they posted a YouTube video of the noise. Might be worth doing a search for that and compare noises... I sincerely hope it is something far less serious, but if it is the Intermediate shaft getting it fixed now will be cheaper than after it breaks - although I'm afraid it would still be a substantial bill
Many thanks for the quick reply Wattie.Don't worry the car is parked and I have arranged for it to be inspected in the morning. When you say substantial can you be a bit more specific and is there a chance that it still may be the water pump failing? What does the intermediate shaft do exactly?
Intermediate shaft is in the heart of the engine. Unfortunately if this is the problem, it's fairly expensive to fix. Hopefully you're close to Hartech, as they are experts in rebuilding engines (if that is the problem). Have a read here of the intermediate shaft: http://www.hartech.org/docs/buyers guide web format Jan 2007 part 2.pdf Cheers.
is this the one?
