I read the report which read as independent and showed v slight gains when using super fuel compared with ordinary fuel, but also found a whopping 40bhp increase on an M3 when using Tesco 99RON.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

In a previous thread about using super fuel compared with bog standard some kind chap sent a link to a tuning firm, Thornbury I think... I was cynical about the marketed benefits of super unleaded & always thought that any difference would be undetectable in a blind test. I read the report which read as independent and showed v slight gains when using super fuel compared with ordinary fuel, but also found a whopping 40bhp increase on an M3 when using Tesco 99RON. I was at the trade day of the NEC Autosport/Pistonheads exhibition & amongst lots of blokes having their photo's taken with promotional maidens who would not acknowledge existence of same chaps if they weren't at work, said tuning company have a stand there plastered with Tesco 99RON logo's. Surely this invalidates their so called test as they have an obvious commercial interest. Gutted as I was intending to sample the Tesco stuff next tankful, now my fears that the hateful Tesco really do rule the UK are confounded.

POST 2Original post

I'm slightly confused by your post - indeed Thorney Motorsport do have Tescos as a sponsor, but if you read their tests they point out that any 99 RON unleaded has the same effect (i.e. allows your engine to work at its full factory-figures potential), and they do testing using all three Shell, Tesco and BP. IIRC they only reason they recommend Tesco99 over Shell is that it appeared more consistant? Or lost less RON if stored for a few weeks? Why don't you just actually try the petrol? RON 99 makes a HUGE difference to a turbo car I have.

POST 3Original post

If you visited the site you will see that the test was actually sponsored by Tesco 99, but carried out under laboratory conditions by an independent tuner in Milton Keynes. Just because Tesco paid some of the bills doesn't mean that the results are invalid does it?

POST 4Original post

Of course not! You wouldn't want to pee your major sponsor off though would you?
