Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion

I personally am very wary when it comes to buying bargain tyres, so make sure you know the source/history of them and check the DOT number (you can only keep tyres for 6 years!).

Other than making the speedo under-read slightly, anyone know of any problems using these?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

11 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Morning all. The wife's Cabrio is currently running 285 30 18 rears. Just been offered a pair of 35 profiles at a bargain price. Other than making the speedo under-read slightly, anyone know of any problems using these? Pete

POST 2Original post

Yes... Will affect the handling as you will have a different sidewall stiffness. You may also have problems with tyres fouling the bodywork on full bump and the geometry may well be affected too. The tyre will also be quite a bit heavier than the standard tyre - so maybe increased wear and tear on driveshafts, differential and clutch? However, the biggest risk these days is an excuse to get out of paying an insurance or warranty claim as you will then have tyres that are not standard or approved equipment. Not worth the risk IMO.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the advice! I'll give them a miss then! :thumb: Pete

POST 4Original post

I think it's wise... Also, it's just occured to me that you would be borderline illegal with the speedo if yours is currently accurate - as no under-reading at all is allowed. Tyres are one thing that I never compromise on personally - at the end of the day they are the only thing between you and the road at silly speeds!

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Silly speeds...??? As if........! :hand:

POST 8Original post

I personally am very wary when it comes to buying bargain tyres, so make sure you know the source/history of them and check the DOT number (you can only keep tyres for 6 years!). 35s are fine to run on the back of a 996 (including facelift) as long as they are 265 wide and not 285, so: 285/30/18 or 265/35/18 are fine. 285 is the official specification, but the manual states (and so does the inside of the filler cap) that 265s are also fine on the facelift. Officially, 265s are actually a winter specification tyre and 285s are the summer specification. Cheers, GD

POST 9Original post

If yours is a manual Wattie it would seem that 6th gear is actually shorter than 5th on the tiptronic. I just noticed on your piccie that you were at 6200rpm, and yet speedo is reading 165mph; mine 2001 C4 tip was indicating 175mph at 6200rpm so I either have a very optimistic speedo, or a tall 5th gear. Any other explanation?

POST 10Original post

Iniar, I'll let you into a little secret. I don't think that pic was of Wattie's car. I'm sure I saw a thread using that pic a while back. Wattie please correct me? Pete

POST 11Original post

It's actually 6400 rpm, but still doesn't explain 10 mph... Gearing is probably the explanation - to minimise difference in fuel consumption perhaps?
