Most frustrating, have changed pads on all my cars over the years and never had problems.

Anyway thought I'd change the discs and pads on my C4S today, bought the parts a while ago and haven't had a chance before now.

I replaced the pin set as it was advised but after 20k on original pads the spring plates still had alot of 'spring' in them and the pin was fine, could have reused, but then it's brakes and the pin kit is like an extra £10 per axle so...

I looked on youtube and it not so surprisingly has geeks (I include myself as one of these) that post step by step video on changing Porsche pads.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all, hope you all had a great Christmas.
Anyway thought I'd change the discs and pads on my C4S today, bought the parts a while ago and haven't had a chance before now.
Well the calipers come off easily enough as did the discs easy change.
But am now stuck tring to get the bl%$£Wdy pads out - the pin which hold the retaining spring wont budge, I have removed the one split pin holding the pin and thought the pin should then slid out.
But its solid - - don't want to bash it from the front as the red enamal is going to get damaged (C4S).
Can someone tell me.
Which way does it come out - must be pushed backwards/inwards.
Is there a thread on it?
Is it drifted out?
Most frustrating, have changed pads on all my cars over the years and never had problems.
It all seemed very well designed until I came to this dammed pin!
An hours job has now turned into an all morning one!!!!!
Cheers :mechanic:
vlad it has no thread and should just require punching out gently with a suitable punch (or other) and a hammer. Do this from the front. May need a bit of WD-40 if it is jammed. Easiest done in situ on the disc.
Pete
cheers - will try some WD40 - have taken a drift to it and got it about 50% through caliper but its now solid.
Is it going to take this amount of force to put it back - i.e a hammer??
Red paint now gone from top of pin?!
Try pushing down on the spring plate, that's what's holding it tight in. It takes a bit of pushing but when the plate compresses you should be able gently tap the pin out from front to back. :thumb:
Thanks guys - got the pin out - can see whats happened - the calipers when they were touched up / resprayed - in situ - by OPC approved paintshop got paint on the pin its then been baked on the pin has layers on it.
So off to OPC for replacement pin set.
Whilst on the subject - the company I bought the replacement parts from said no need for replacement spring pin set? Do you guys replace these.
They did advise replacement caliper bolts which I'll change.
.....Also and this seems to be turning into a nightmare job I have just noticed the pads don't have the compensating masses at the top of the pads as the originals did.
They are the textar replacements its this OK - wishing I had bought the pads from an OPC now?
Should the replacement Turbo/C4S pads have these bobbles at the top of the pads?
Muppets...
I replaced the pin set as it was advised but after 20k on original pads the spring plates still had alot of 'spring' in them and the pin was fine, could have reused, but then it's brakes and the pin kit is like an extra £10 per axle so...
No idea on the turbo/C4S compensating mass thing as my C2 Textar pads had them as OEM...
I have the pads without the compensating mass weights on my turbo, no problems at all, I think it's just an older design.
I expect the pins would have come out a lot easier if the caliper had remained on the hub? the pins are the first thing to come out when I do mine.
Got new pins from opc - they slid in no force required - so it was just down to the overspray when the calipers were touched up (thats one to watch for in the future).
Re: drifting them out - the calipers were attatched while I was doing this (wouldn't have been able to if they weren't) as it was obvious they were jammed.
While at the OPC we checked the pads and the C4S/Turbo pads have been revised and they don't have the bobbles at the top of the pads anymore.
Wow that was harder than I thought! Job done though - thanks all great that we have enough peeps on-line to get near real-time help - very impressive.
vlad, glad to hear it worked out. I looked on youtube and it not so surprisingly has geeks (I include myself as one of these) that post step by step video on changing Porsche pads. Haven't found a vid for the discs yet but will keep looking. I will be charging myself £120 an hour for the brakes when they need done and will be putting the funds into my beer kitty
. Anyone fancy 2-300 pints on me?
Pete
