I could here that it was misfiring (sometimes sounding like it was about to cut out) and gave it a light 30 mile run to see if it would adjust itself but no joy =-(
Leading evidence: 'Reconnect battery' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Adjust itself' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

went to the indie today and the coil packs were fine so he changed the maf and the engine light was still on and the diagnostic told us the oxygen sensors are gone so gonna have them done asap....just an update ;-)

If your CEL is now on - disconnect neg lead for 30 seconds or more (key in ignition with dash lights on as you have been doing) reconnect lead, leave ignition on for a minute, turn off, turn back on and fire up and allow the car to idle for a couple of minutes.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Battery died the other day and i put a new one in following the correct procedure (turning the ignition on to the point where any further would start the car, then changing the battery starting with the negative first and connecting it last with the new battery, then switching the ignition off).

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Happy new year all
uh:
Two weeks ago i had a new radiator fitted and the battery died while it was at the garage and there was very little fuel in the car.
The garage were charging the battery for me when i came to pick it up. I got in the car while the engine was running and noticed the 'check' engine light on. I told the engineer who was unaware and he said 'it sounds like its misfiring...thats why the light has come on..it could be because theres very little fuel'. He advised me to quickly get fuel and if its still on after, bring it back. The light remained on after i got fuel so i drove back and he plugged in the computer, worked his magic and the light went out after a few seconds and the misfiring stopped.
Battery died the other day and i put a new one in following the correct procedure (turning the ignition on to the point where any further would start the car, then changing the battery starting with the negative first and connecting it last with the new battery, then switching the ignition off).
I didnt start the car that day after changing the battery but started it two days later (today) only to be greeted by the 'check' engine light! I could here that it was misfiring (sometimes sounding like it was about to cut out) and gave it a light 30 mile run to see if it would adjust itself but no joy =-(
To my knowledge the coil packs were changed not long ago by the previous owner (ive only had the car 3 months).
Maybe putting the ignition on before disconnecting the negative confuses something in the engine as you can hear something switching on in the engine bay when you turn the key to the point before ignition..then when you connect the new battery with the key still in that position maybe it upsets something...what else could it be..maybe it will be ok when i start it next..will let you know.
Has anyone else had this after changing batteries?
thanks all
ps. the car has been garaged so no moisture/ice/rain has gotten in.
No probs Peter...hopefully you'll get some help by it being here
BTW the 996 is similar to a boxster. When I change the battery in my boxster I do the same as you. However it is important that when you reconnect to put the negative lead on last and then leave the ignitition on for a minute, turn it off and then fire it up. i.e. don't turn the ignition off as soon as you have reconnected the battery.
If your CEL is now on - disconnect neg lead for 30 seconds or more (key in ignition with dash lights on as you have been doing) reconnect lead, leave ignition on for a minute, turn off, turn back on and fire up and allow the car to idle for a couple of minutes. If after this, the CEL is on, you have an engine management problem that needs diagnosing.
Thanks so much boxsey :thumb: will try it tomorrow...its a strange thing though isnt it? I know i didnt run to the ignition and turn it off as soon as i connected the negative but cant say for sure if i left it for a minute or so either...probably somewhere in between...i will try that anyway. thanks again and have a great night..
Hi Boxsey
Hows yr head..lol :?
I did what you said and no luck sadly for me..the engine light stayed on and it carried on running with an uneven idle and sounding like it will cut out...didnt drive it this time incase i brake something..will go to an indy tomorrow..
thanks for the help mate
happy new year
