Also took your advise and had the tranny fluid replaced completely as well.

Suggestion
I did run my car in sport plus even so we, those with PDKs and Sports Chrono, were warned at the driver's meeting that doing so would be inviting an overheat condition due to conditions and locations.

Suggestion
If you don't have the factory LSD on your vehicle you will be less likely to experience the overheat condition running sport plus in the conditions identified in this thread.

/997s to the track and you're going to hear a lot more about heat abatement mods, such as header wrap and/or coatings, fan coolers such as yours and even the better idea - running those lines from the pump ALL THE WAY FORWARD with a cooler (no fan) in front of the third radiator.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Finally got the Napleton derived cooling mod installed on my
Cayman
R last week. Will see how much of an improvement it will be
next
weekend in regards to preventing overheating.
Thanks for the update amdeutsch.
I was told by napleton that there is a significant reduction in temps with this setup, but there isn't a way to measure the temps that's native to the
cayman
(OBD port or otherwise).
Don't
PDK
caymans
have some plastic ducting attached to the aluminum undertray that is in your pics? Were these removed?
Not that I'm aware of or had on mine. I've had it on a lift several to change pads and never noticed, recall noticing, what you are mentioning.
P.S.
Also took your advise and had the tranny fluid replaced completely as well.
Mine has the temp sensor option. The other 2 are direct wire (ON all the time) or add-on switch activated. The temp sensor on mine (do not have the value) activates a fan for increased airflow. The pump is ON continuously, with the engine, to circulate the fluid through the radiator.
Yes, my car is a
PDK
.
For cost you will need to check with your local. But be forewarned; you will need to have, show a verifiable history of overheating. It also will help your cause if your dealer has several owners who have experienced, documented this overheat issue.
AFAIK
Porsche
had a car last year that exhibited the overheat issue while being driven on a track.
Same here.
This is not OEM as had been discussed previously in other threads - latest hint was in the first post of this thread.
I will no longer address cost and/or parts beyond what I've already done. Every dealer seems to have a different cost structure, junk fess, etc.
UPDATE
First advanced DE after installing this mod. Ran the RMR HPR DE, Club Race. Those familiar with the location chime in.
Tried to get the car to overheat. While the temps on the idiot gauge climbed I did not get into redline territory. I barely went past the last bar in front of the 250 mark. I did run my car in sport plus even so we, those with PDKs and Sports Chrono, were warned at the driver's meeting that doing so would be inviting an overheat condition due to conditions and locations.
So, to sum it up:
1) I tried
2) I didn't succeed completely.
HTH
Just curious, do you have any other cooling mods (larger 997 oil/water heat exchanger or external oil cooler etc.) My car can get to 250 (obd2 reading not just guage) in as little as 12 minutes into a session here in the so cal summer. I'm thinking this for the
PDK
plus an
LN engineering
oil cooler bypass plate feeding a mocal cooler should do the trick.
I'd love to find that out as well. There seems to be no display setting for any Trans temp... Neither are Trans/clutch temperatures are reported to obd2. Just put an ultragauge in the car so I can get real time accurate coolant temps. These cars run much hotter than the dash says.

AFAIK, been told, it cools the LSD. The LSD is connected via a thin wall to the
PDK
(same hausing) which is cooled by the regular coolant. But the heat transfer from the LSD is causing the
PDk
fluid to overheat. Therefore the regular coolant is being asked to do something it wasn't designed for.
I've heard that for the MY13
Porsche
did somewhat of a redesign to alleviate the thermal issues to a certain extent.
Now, I've also heard a rumor of a 997 S model with
PDK
starting to show symptoms. It may be a bigger issue than initially thought.
This whole fiasco is appearing to be reminiscent of the infamous IMS issue.
Thanx. Maybe this should be provided up front instead of just assumed.
rubber_ducky: How much larger are these vs the stock radiators?
answer: The size of the core is the same in order to retain OEM fitment. The end tanks hold another 10% of water vs stock. The cooling efficiency them comes into place with the B Tube Technology.
Bull_D: so what are the claimed efficiencies? any % figures?
answer: 20% more efficient vs stock
But again 'no data' regarding these claims was provided. A quick research on that forum shows negative. Keep in mind that the pics show a
911
race car and not a 987. If I were you I would contact them and ask for proof that it helps the issues experienced, the ones you are questioning. Did they test it on a production version 987, etc, etc, etc?
Do they have references they are willing to provide where it worked on a 987?
The part #'s are the same as the 997, for the side radiators at least (verified this on
Suncoast
porsche
site).
I'll go peruse the
997.2 pdk
forums as well but do you know if those cars have had any similar overheating issues with the factory LSD?
The CSF radiators are available and are supposedly holding up well.
One of their biggest fans is Rebel Rock Racing in Florida...that's who took the pics you posted, Postman.
Amdouche, wow, chill out...you're one of the first people to do this mod back in 2012 so you're a "Unicorn", basically...people are going to pile on you for info.
Now that it's getting to be Spring of 2014 (we hope, at least...) A LOT more people are taking
PDK
Caymans
/997s to the track and you're going to hear a lot more about heat abatement mods, such as header wrap and/or coatings, fan coolers such as yours and even the better idea - running those lines from the pump ALL THE WAY FORWARD with a cooler (no fan) in front of the third radiator. That seems to be the way to do it as keeping everything in the rear of the car just invites heat soak.
I'm going through this conversion NOW as I'm changing the drive train in my Gen. 1 to a Gen. II with
PDK
, so posts like this are helping me figure out how people are doing the diff. cooler. "Newbie" or not, yes, people do come to the forum to "USE" it, nothing wrong with that, it's why we're here.
I received a set of three CSF radiators mentioned above from StylinTrucks. The total came to $1215 delivered. I am doing this to improve cooling capacity 8 - 10% and to get rid of fragile radiators with plastic tanks. They arrived today:
No. If you don't have the factory LSD on your vehicle you will be less likely to experience the overheat condition running sport plus in the conditions identified in this thread.
Not really helpful to this thread but
981
PDKs come two water to oil coolers installed.
I have the CSF radiators installed now and am seeing two or three degrees lower coolant and engine oil temps ( no
PDK
) even with AC on. Not too hot in FL right now ( 68F - 78 F ). Track use is where I hope to see more improvement.
Finished a 2-day at MSR Cresson this weekend with no temp issues whatsoever. Ran in sport plus the entire time, temps were in the mid-70's. Coolant temps topped out around 221-222F, of course the stock gauge never moved from 175...
Solo DL was hooked up via OBD2, will get it wired into CAN before the
next
event so I can report on oil temps.
Thanks for all the info in this thread guys.
Wanted to update folks with my results using the CSF radiators at the track. The oil temperature was reduced from 220 F to 210 F at 85 F ambient. I have three CSF radiators installed, Redline water wetter and 996 oil cooler.
Happy New Year
