Pull the black plasic trim piece if u r having that trouble seeing the level, i just use a flashlihgt.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am about to flush the brake system on my '03 996.2 C2 Targa using my pressure bleeder. This will be my first time doing this on my 996 since buying it in 2022. I have done this procedure many times when I was racing my '69 911S. On my '69 911, the brake fluid reservoir had an overflow tube and I needed to clamp the tube to prevent the air pressure from forcing the fluid out the overflow tube instead of to the master cylinder and on to the brake calipers. Recently, I noticed a photo of a 996 reservoir for sale here on RL (see below) that shows some sort of an outlet on the side in addition to the two outlets on the bottom that go to the master cylinder. What is its purpose of the outlet? Every thread on RL says there is no need to actuate the ABS in order to flush the fluid. I have not seen anything about clamping an overflow tube. Is there an overflow tube that needs to be clamped? Thanks.

POST 3Original post

I think that outlet is for the clutch hydraulics.

POST 4Original post

The 996 system is sealed. There is nothing to clamp for the brakes or the clutch. No need to activate the abs motor either. U r not introducing air into the system so there is no way a bubble gets caught anywere im the system.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks! I appreciate all of your advice. This is normally a very easy project, so not having to worry about clamping an overflow tube makes it even simpler.

No vent anywhere in the system. Its sealed. The level should be at the resi seam. Pull the black plasic trim piece if u r having that trouble seeing the level, i just use a flashlihgt. The resi has 0 effect in the performance of the brakes....it just stores the extra fluid for the pressure circuit. I would just pressure blead another quart through the system, u probably still have some air in there.
