Did you look at the "pulley's" that the cable runs in on the corners of the assembly? If they wear out, that's the sound you get....... -Eric

I removed the window motor and powered that off the regulator and it sounded silky smooth so I concluded the regulator was bad and ordered a new one.

Is it crunchy sounding? That's probably the regulator. I replaced the passenger side myself. It wasn't hard, although I introduced some minor rattles in that door. I'll eventually open it back up to see what I left dangling.

I just replaced my passenger side window regulator, as it did exactly what is happening to yours. Seems intimidating to do at first but after watching several youtube videos and write-ups, it was fairly straight-forward.
