I've checked the pads and they are barely half worn, discs are a little scored, but not serious (will probably need changing at next pad change).

My car lives outside and has started making an alarming noise when first driving off - especially if the car hasn't been used for a couple of days.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My car lives outside and has started making an alarming noise when first driving off - especially if the car hasn't been used for a couple of days. It sounds exactly like the noise you get when brake discs have rusted over, but doesn't stop after a firm brake application and happens even if the car has only been left overnight (not long enough for the discs to corrode). The noise almost disappears during normal driving after about 2-3 miles, but is still quite noisy under braking. I've checked the pads and they are barely half worn, discs are a little scored, but not serious (will probably need changing at next pad change). Is it likely that it is a dry wheel bearing or something? If so, why would the noise go away after a few miles? Confused... :?:

POST 2Original post

sounds kind of normal, if you car is parked outsisde and has to cope with the weather, I have the same issues with mine, I have to thread very carefully for the 1st mile or so to get things warmed up then everything is fine and gently work up some temp in the brakes, as brake discs do seem to react to almost everything this time of year !

POST 3Original post

have you checked the inner brake disc surfaces for corrosion as this may cause your noise .

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I haven't (not easy to do without ramps and lowered chassis), but why would this make a noise even when the brakes aren't on? And surely this would go away completely after a couple of firm brake applications? I did wonder if there might be something wrong inside the handbrake drums though? It really is a hideous noise for the first 1/2 mile - like I'm rolling along on the rims instead of the tyres!

POST 5Original post

it depends on if the insides of the disc have bad corrosion as this causes bigger lips which rub slightly on the back plates..
