Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

24 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1Original post

after conservative driving I notice a burning smell from the rear, not the brakes. But almost like there is something plastic burning in the engine. No its not the clutch. Not driving with the E brake on. Is this normal for mid engine. It almost seems like it cant cool down. The temp stays at 175. My wife noticed it "your car always smells like its burning" Not even pushing the car driving fast or anything. Just a 45mph cruise to get gas. Anyone else noticed this? I have 4,000 miles on her

POST 2Original post

search for "cosmoline." Mine still smells like that after just over 20k... brad

Don't forget to read the FAQs either: http://www.planet-9.com/faq.php?faq=miscellan#faq_idios

POST 4Original post

Ran over a plastic grocery bag in my 987 Boxster that didn't come out the back. Part of the bag melted on a muffler and even after I cleaned it off it had the burnt plastic smell for a few months. Even after 17K on it, it had a little smell from the motor.

POST 5Original post

Yeah Buddy... Cosmoline stinks!!! The GF keeps thinking I am smoking the tires... LOL

POST 7Original post

it's normal... just get an air freshener

POST 9Original post

Roll down the windows and go faster. The car does have an smell of its own.

POST 10Original post

Phew, that's a relief for me too. I was starting to think I had a clutch problem or something. Does it really take 20k miles to disappear?

POST 12Original post

try to modify your diet; take in a little less fibre Sorry....I couldn't resist....

POST 13Original post

Dealers should let you know about cosmoline up front. It is perfectly reasonable that Porsche would apply it to their cars for shipping but unreasonable that some of us would have to lose sleep over the burning smell. I had no idea what cosmoline was until I found this site. I was able to request that the dealer remove as much as possible (especially wheels) before I took ownership.

POST 14Original post

ROFL You beat me to it. What can I say... sick minds think alike.

POST 15Original post

Maybe its the other cars you smoked when you were zipping around the corner?:burnout:

POST 16Original post

i love that burning smell from my car.... so addicting...

POST 17Original post

At least you guys don't have to deal with it running down onto your car after it rains. I still have it seeping from the underside of the doors of my MINI - there must be a gallon of that stuff in there.. I have yet to notice it on the Cayman though (the smell or otherwise).

POST 19Original post

Burning smell Did you have this smell inside the car as well. Especially with the heat or air going? I am hoping it is not the clutch master cylider leaking???

POST 20Original post

I agree. It's not a pleasant smell, but it is very unique and it constantly reminds me of my first week in the car when the smell was so strong.

POST 22Original post

Burning smell I smell it while driving. Again mainly with the AC or heat on. If I stop at a light it seems to work it's way stronger. My car has 410 miles on it. My Boxster (built in Stuutgart) never smelled like this??

POST 23Original post

I'd say this could be caused by friction. Try more lubricant. Uh,... wait, ...... never mind....... I thought you were talking about something else. My mistake....

POST 24Original post

LOL's!! More lube it is! Wait Vasoline or cosmoline???
