Once I got them out I did clean them up and reuse them, however I ordered new ones and replaced them a couple of weeks later and used a bit of Brembo grease on them to prevent the same happening again.

Suggestion

I had to use a dremmel and a sandpaper attachment to clean the rust up; also mole grips to rotate the pin so could clean up the inside.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Can anyone help with this old chestnut? Attempted to change my front axle discs and pads today but got stuck as soon as the wheels were off! Damn retaining pin. I've tried penetrant and invested in a solid parallel punch and metal mallet but it won't budge on one side. The other side did eventually move through the first hole but then got stuck again. Any hints and tips would be much appreciated. Thanks. David

POST 2Original post

I had to use a dremmel and a sandpaper attachment to clean the rust up; also mole grips to rotate the pin so could clean up the inside. Once I got them out I did clean them up and reuse them, however I ordered new ones and replaced them a couple of weeks later and used a bit of Brembo grease on them to prevent the same happening again.

POST 3Original post

If you apply some pressure to the pad retaining spring in the middle they should move easier. Also make sure the R clip is removed at the back.

POST 4Original post

When I've had to do this on clios I've cut them in half first so you can focus on it as two separate things.

POST 5Original post

The pin diameter may be increased due to corrosion, so won't go through the hole; get some emery paper or wet and dry. Cut into strips and feed it round the back of the pin and use reciprocating motion (like a 2 man saw) to clean up the bits you can't see. keep doing it using new sections of abrasive, do similar with the bits you can see.you're aiming for shiny metal on the pin. you might have to knock it back in its original position and clean up the first section, as you're tring to push the pin through a hole which isn't big enough. get new pins

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks v much for the replies. Unfortunately I don't have a Dremel but it's on my list! I tried sanding down the pin but decided to cut my losses and have just dropped the car off at Zentrum (who kindly fitted it in with zero notice!). I managed the rear brakes and discs fine last time but I guess time and rust have done their thing. Guess I need to accept the car is getting on and stuck/seized items are more of an issue. Will see if I can expand my tool kit in future for such jobs. I hadn't even tried the calliper nuts so hopefully they'll move ok for Zentrum. Thanks again and big thanks to Zentrum for fitting it in at no notice. Dave

POST 7Original post

These cars are a nightmare for stuck fasteners due to the mix of steel bolts into/through aluminium arms and brackets.

POST 8Original post

I feel your pain, believe me and had the same experience on one caliper when I last refurb'd them all. You have a few options really.. 1.. cut the pin in half then use some grips to try and rotate it to free them 2.. use a punch that is same diameter as the pin (or just about's..) and use a small club hammer as try and tap it out 3.. remove the caliper in total, support it well and use a punch with club hammer I got mine out with 2 above but was getting to the point in removing the caliper in total, it will come out just be careful and be accurate when you hammer it and you do need to give it a good wack Hope you get the sucker out my friend

POST 9Original post

It is usually rust backing up in the pin hole when you punch them out, if you tap it back and forth and get in to clean as much rust off as possible with a file or sandpaper. Also as mentioned if you are going to fit new pins just cut them off and work them with a drift.
