I had this problem on my S4 once and it turned out to be a radiator control fan module...replaced under warranty in about an hour.
Leading evidence: 'radiator control fan module...replaced' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'radiator control fan module...replaced' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check coolant level' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Sounds like a trip to the OPC to me - probably a bad thermostat on the fan.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all,
Wasn't sure where to put this, so here goes
My drivers side cooling fan (UK - RHS of car
) starts about 5 seconds after the engine has started up, and doesn't turn off. This was from when the car was cold, so it can't be the temperature.
Anyone else had this? Or have any ideas why this may happen?
Thanks,
Graeme
What was the coolant temp? That is supposed to be what determines whether it comes on or not. You car can sit for hours and still have warm coolant. Bad thermostat on the fan?
Car sat for over a day (and night ofc
) - coolant temp on gauge below 40.
I am guessing something to do with thermostat - but was wondering if anyone else has had this before.
The ever powerful 'search' revealed only one other such topic with only one reply, but wondered if anything had changed since then
I had this problem on my S4 once and it turned out to be a radiator control fan module...replaced under warranty in about an hour. Could be the same thing, maybe?
Good question - no, I haven't checked it in the last 2 weeks, and will do so.
However, the fan comes on as soon as the car starts, so even if it was bone dry, it wouldn't get that hot that quickly. The temp never goes over the halfway point either - I was keeping a close eye on it
Good news is I am in on Wednesday for them to sort out some overspray on one of my wheels, so they can check it out then....
Fingers crossed there is no bad news....
Sometimes I wish I didn't notice things!
Sigh..... Car in to OPC - now it's staying there for 2 days
Turns out the reason the driver side fan was so noisy was because the passenger side fan ceased operating in it's entirety, and the remaining fan was therefore working double time. It's being replaced under warranty.
Gison,
Thanks for following up on the solution to your fan troubles. I think the same thing is happening on my car and have the good folks at Tischer exploring it, even as I type. Unfortunately, when I brought it in last week, the service manager thought I was referring to the air conditiner fan. They're now replacing something in that--I didn't even think there was anything wrong with it.
Anyway, my car has 5,000 miles on it at 5 months of age. 3 weeks ago, the engine fan on the passenger side started running after a mild 10 minute drive in 80 degree outdoor air temperatues. I thought it was odd, since the fan had never gone on in the past--even following extremely competitive rally driving.
Now, the fan goes on after I first start the car--BEFORE the engine has even had a chance to heat up. The passenger side blower runs for a few minutes, then shuts off. It doesn't happen all the time, but it is happening more often now. I have forwarded your thread and will let you know what they find...
BTW, I love the CS, but it has been buggy:
4 days old--engine wouldn't turn over--had to be towed to dealer. Loose wires leading to battery.
1 month old, then again at 4 months old--clutch pedal stuck to floor and AC began blowing warmer. Replaced slave cylinder and loose O ring on AC.
Now this...
It certainly sounds similar - I hope you have a resolution as quick as mine
Sorry to hear about the other issues - sounds like you at least get to use the car well though!
I thought there was only one fan in the engine compartment located on the right-hand side of the car just behind the air vent in front of the rear wheel arch?
Are you guys sure there is a second engine cooling fan on the left-hand side?
There are two fans for the radiators at the front of the car but I thought the engine compartment had just one fan to blow out hot air.
Good question - to be honest, I didn't question it - I just listened to what they told me, and as such assumed there was more than one
The parts catalogue seems to imply there are two as well - it has separate part numbers for them anyway
Yes, but there is a difference between normal running and they make so much noise that it is all you can hear.
In my case, it was running at full power to compensate for the other fan being out of action.
This statement depends on what you consider a cooling fan. The engine compartment fan does not run when the A/C is on (unless the temperature triggers the fan). However, the fans located in the front of the car with the radiators do run whenever the A/C is on.
Here's an update to my earlier post (#13). After one week, I have my CS back from the dealer. Here's the invoice statement verbatim:

I drove the car for an hour and a half--spirited driving out in the country--after picking it up from the dealer. The engine fan never came on during the dirve or after stopping and parking. I left the car parked for 15 minutes, took it to the spray gun car wash, washed it...as I pulled out of the service bay, the engine fan cranked on again!!! loud as ever. It stopped after about a minute. Obviously not fixed. (Again, it never ran loud and at odd times for the first 5,000 miles. See post #13)
Question for anyone who knows Porsches and their engine fans:
Would Ferry
Porsche
--were he still alive--tell me:
A.)
Porsche
engine fans come on at odd times for no reason at all...fuh-get-about-it.
B.)
Porsches are quirky. One CS may have a fan that loudly goes off any old time, another CS may have a fan that never makes a loud noise--totally irrelelvent. fuh-get-about-it
C.)
Your
Porsche
--even on extreme rallies--never made engine fan noises, now it does even when first starting up and the engine's cold. Means nothing...fuh-get-about-it
Forgive my cynicism, but I am a bit frustrated. Not only is it loud, but I fear that the engine's health may be threatened. Something must be causing this. I asked to have the thermostat fan examined and there was no mention of that on the invoice. If there IS heat building up when it shouldn't, shouldn't that be of concern?
I realize that the dealer can't fix something that doesn't act up when the mechanic looks at it, but what can I do? Should I just let it go until it becomes so chronic that he has to hear it? Am I overreacting and is a fan that runs at odd times no big deal? Any advice wold be appreciated...
