In the course of the next 5 days, I secured a cashier's check, plane tix for for my BIL and me, and took the red-eye out from SAN to BOS on Friday night, the 22nd.

I emailed them and after getting the car details (man trans, heated sports seats plus, heated multi-function steering wheel, lane change assist, Bose stereo, nav - with Car Play, new front pads & rotors, 60K svc done), I decided that this was a good deal on a great car.

Oh, and the steering is much quicker, the car wants to dive into corners and change directions, like you're playing with a puppy.
Replace hands this saturday, and i already miss it

For the most part Im using the same gears in the same places/conditions.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Ive had 7 great years of commuting, weekend blasting, and some epic road trips. Its time to move on to something different (almost definitely another Porsche).
The auction went live today, closes on the 5th. Fingers crossed that 996 values are still strong.

23 hours remaining.
I changed the oil, gave her a wash, and did an ECU interrogation.
Cam deviation and cylinder roughness look great. Im already feeling nostalgic but sure shell be well taken care of.

I see that it didnt meet reserve but it was sold after.
Were you happy with the final sale price?
Your 996 had higher mileage but looked nice and well maintained.
IMO Cars and Bids is the home of the everlasting 20K 996.
I had the reserve at $22.5K, bidding stalled out at $20K.
C&B put the high-bidder in touch with me and we agreed on $22K
(I threw in my Durametric & Bentley manual - was going to try and sell them separately)
The process was fun, and I think I got a decent price, without having to deal with a bunch of low-ballers and time wasters.
I bought the car in 2016, pretty much at the bottom of the market, got 7 years and 60,000mi worth of enjoyment.
The car will change hands this Saturday, and I already miss it. About 95% sure Ill replace it with a 718 Cayman.
Its great that you had a good experience.
I agree 100% with not wanting to sell through a classified ad and then dealing with the idiots.
Did that once, never again.
Mike, If you end up getting the 718, post some ownership comparison thoughts when you do. I've had my 996 for 7 years, like you I bought at the bottom of the market. But my daughters turn 16 in less than 2 years and I won't need back seats any longer. I really like the 718s and a 718 Cayman is on my short list of replacement options as well.
It still amazes me one can buy a 911 for $22k in 2023.
I had a 986 S for a few years and compared to my 996, the mid-engined layout was more balanced.
Do post back when you get your 718.
Congrats on the sale!
Here's the follow-up to my 996 sale.
I had been stalking several 718 Caymans for a while, trying to keep to a budget of as close to $50K as possible. The only 2 "must-haves" were manual transmission and heated seats. After those, I created a ranked-list of preferences. I also expanded my search to nationwide, just to see what was out there. Once of my saved cars on AutoTrader was a CPO 2018 base model (virtually everything in my assigned price range was a 2.0), located at a Porsche dealer in New Hampshire. After watching them drop the price a couple times (to roughly $47.5K), I began to have this crazy notion of flying in and driving home. I emailed them and after getting the car details (man trans, heated sports seats plus, heated multi-function steering wheel, lane change assist, Bose stereo, nav - with Car Play, new front pads & rotors, 60K svc done), I decided that this was a good deal on a great car. In the course of the next 5 days, I secured a cashier's check, plane tix for for my BIL and me, and took the red-eye out from SAN to BOS on Friday night, the 22nd. We landed Saturday morning, they picked me up from the airport and took me back to the dealership. The car looked as good in person as it did in the ad and an hour later I was headed West in my "new" 718 Cayman. WE cannonballed back across the country, and I pulled into my garage at about 3:30AM on Tuesday morning. Trip computer showed an average of 76mph and 29.5mpg.
Observations so far.
I wanted a more "modern" car and a different driving experience. This gives me exactly that, but still maintains its "Porsche-ness". The drive is definitely more sports car and less GT car, it pretty much steers from the middle. The steering does have less feel than the 996, but despite the electric power steering, there is still "feel". Oh, and the steering is much quicker, the car wants to dive into corners and change directions, like you're playing with a puppy. You sit noticeably lower and the sports plus seats hold you in tighter. Evert gas stop / potty break during the drive home we were both doing a very stiff, old-man walk for several minutes.
The turbo flat-4 does not have the howling high-end charge of the M96, but there is torque everywhere. I don't think it sounds bad, it just doesn't sound anywhere as good as a flat-6. As a small consolation, when in Sport mode, the exhaust pops and crackles a bit on deceleration. Biggest driving style change to learn is the clutch action. The engagement point is near the top of the travel and the engine feels as if it has almost no flywheel mass, VERY easy to stall it (I've driven other examples of the 718, they were similar). As a former M96 owner, it is a pleasure not to live in fear of every sound from the engine, real or perceived. No more, "what was that noise?" panic moments.
I've now lived with the 718 for 2 weeks, commuting and doing my weekend morning drive. Much like a 996, the "base" model 718 has all I need for power and handling, it's an absolute pleasure to drive.
I do miss the specialness of a 911, but this car scratches the itch that I was developing. I'm learning to "let go of the howl and embrace the growl".
Congrats! I'll keep an eye out for the car. I'm in Carlsbad. I used to fly out of CRQ but haven't flown in about 3 years. Is that slate grey? Not sure what they're calling the color now. It looks like the same color as my 996.
Awesome! Way to stay in the family. There is no bad Porsche. I remember when the 996 was the newest car Porsche had. All the folks with the older cars would say that nothing feels quite like the older cars. Oh well, some day your car will be ancient, but it wont detract in any way if it were new or old. Its only the times that change. You have a manual car with an ICE engine. As far as Im concerned, youre still well within the realm of pure sport driving pleasure.
Ive started lurking on the Rennlist 718 forum, and I can tell you that it seems a bit more sedate. No engine stories of doom and gloom, no retired master techs designing solutions to factory deficiencies, and no one telling tales of doing over double the speed limit on public roads while posting pics of barbecued meat.
Haha! There is something special about the 996 crowd. Mostly normal people would buy a Cayman. But after 10-15 years, I bet the Cayman folks will start to turn, lol!
I looked up the weight and power of the 2018 Cayman. Seems like similar power/weight ratio of the 996? Thats impressive. Guessing, though, this car is much faster on the track given advancements in chassis design over the years. That and mid-engined make it an arguably better handling car. And to think that you get all this for under $50k is pretty impressive.
Congratulations! Something like this is exactly like what I have in mind in the same ballpark price. I still need my 996 back seats for a couple more years until my daughters are driving. Thanks for the writeup and detailed comparison.
Well, Im a couple months in now with the 718. Loving the experience so far, but I do miss my 911.
Apparently the buyer of my old car doesnt seem to have fallen in love with it. Looks like he just posted it on Offer Up. Ah well, I hope it does find a good home.
Once a Porsche owner/driver always a Porsche owner/driver. Im not positive, but I would venture a guess that Porsche has one of the highest (if not THE highest) brand loyalties of all the auto manufacturersGood luck with the 718!
You know, I havent really noticed much difference. For the most part Im using the same gears in the same places/conditions. The powerband is very different though.
The 718 clutch takes much more of a learning process, it engages right at the top of the travel, and the engine feels like it has no flywheel. Definitely easier to shift down into 1st without as an aggressive double-clutch/engine-rev as the 996 gearbox requires.
Hey there, I did double the speed limit in NV deserts on my first drive - to home 1000 miles away. Unknown what C4S would do, just try a little. I did see a BBQ place, but it was sort of a blur ya know....
YMMV
