They removed everything down to bare metal around the left rear window, and installed felt tape on the window mounting brackets and trim clips.

I notice it most over rough surfaces, and when lifting my foot off the gas to either decelerate or change gears.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have this and its the same thing. It only happens when I have the windows down and hit a bump or something. I tried placing my hand on the trim between the two windows and was able to get the noise to stop. I plan to mention it to the dealer
next
time I take it in.
Rear window rattle
I found a previous post that led me to realize it is the divider between the windows. It's gotten worse on the left side and now has also started on the right side. I'm taking it to the dealer this Monday. I'll let you know what happens. It's a great car!
Bob
Just had mine fixed
This is a floating window that is not bonded to the body like a windshield. A bolt below the glass holds it in place, and if the bolt is lose or snaps off (like mine did) it will "slap" against the window frame on certain bumps. This section of the body takes high torsional and bending loads and there is a bit of flex here. If the window is not tight, it will make noise as the body is torqued. Insulation or a new bolt will do the trick.
However, the dealers are not experienced with this repair, so make sure they understand the problem. The bolt is accessed by removing the cap where the shoulder belt feeds into the door jamb.
You are better off finding a dealer who has made this repair before. Otherwise the car will be out of commission for a while. Mine was gone for 4 days. Grrrr.
Good luck
Window rattle repaired
Got it fixed yesterday. I think the guidance from this forum made it easy to explain the problem to the mechanic. Dealer had it fixed in a few hours. Paper work mentioned TSB on the problem.
Bob
Bob,
Could you possibly provide the TSB ID for those of us who have the same problem? This will make it easier to communicate it to our dealers to get it repaired.
Thanks,
In my case, it's more of a creak/squeak coming from that rear window. It happens more frequently when my window is fully closed, but it also happens (less frequently) when it is fully open too.
I'm taking it in tomorrow to get fixed. I'll report back.
More of a Rattle
Actually, once I've driven for about 10 minutes and go over 50 mph, I begin to hear a constant rattle in the rear, almost like it's right behind me. But I can't pinpoint where it's coming from.
It's the type of rattle like a high-pitched sound of fast shuffling cards (like when you attached a card to the spoke of your bicycle as a kid), or that sound you can make with your tongue going a thousand miles per hour against the roof of your mouth (I hope these two analogies ring a bell). If anyone else has this problem, I'd like to know how to fix it. It comes and goes. I'll hear it for 5-10 minutes and then it will go away for a while, then return. Very aggravating.
I have had this for a while now and I have written a thread about it. Originally, I was able to put little rubber insulators between the glass and the plastic trim which most got rid of the rattle for a quick road trip - it was short term as the noise came back...I just couldnt stand it and was leaving the
next
day.
Next
, I began putting insulation between the cap over where the seat belt comes out. That didnt do anything. I knew if I placed my hand back there, the rattle would stop.
Next
, I took off more trim and found that bolt I believe you were talking about...is it a silver hex or allen ( I dont remember)? I tried tightening it with no luck. Then, I decided to just take my car in for an alignment and had the rattle looked at simultaneously. They were able to fix the rattle for about 2 weeks, although it has come back much more managable. It is faint when driving over really rough patches of road...yet still bad enough I really want to be able to tighten that bolt down myself so I dont have to keep taking it in....can anyone confirm the bolt an the TSB? TIA
Hey I'm glad others are having this problem... now I don't feel so bad about going to the dealer to ask that it be fixed a second time.
The first time I had this repaired was after about a month of ownership. They removed everything down to bare metal around the left rear window, and installed felt tape on the window mounting brackets and trim clips. The noise went away for a few months, but is now back.
I notice it most over rough surfaces, and when lifting my foot off the gas to either decelerate or change gears. All those situations create some body flex, and that flex is what makes the window "click". At least that's what it seems like to me. Pushing my hand against the window makes it go away.
I tried tightening the hex bolt under the seatbelt access panel on the B pillar, but it didn't seem to help.
If there is a TSB on dealing with this rattle, it would certainly be helpful to know about it.
My service rep said that there are no TSBs for the
Cayman
that deal with any rattles or squeaks coming from the window. They fixed my noise for now though. Apparently, all the mechanic did was loosen and retighten the rear quarter window glass and reassemble the trim and carpeting. Let's hope it stays silent now!
Side glass rattle
Tracy in CA and others who have this issue.
The trick to this, which I learned on another Cayman Club link, is if you have the rattle, press against the glass where the front and back glass meet while your driving. If that changes the rattle, this is the problem. Until, I read that it drove me nuts and was getting worse.
When I made the appt. I asked the person if they could check out the Cayman chat room to get familiar with my problem. He said there is a lot of misinformation on the web. Said their system requires they get the car in, check it out, and call Porsche for advice. I am 100 miles from the dealer and didn't want to be stuck, so the gave me an Avis Malibu Classic! Better than walking, but no wonder GM is in the dumps. My daughters' 8 yr old Accord is nicer.
Anyway, got the car back after lunch, so no sweat.
Got my paperwork out.
"Customer states that there is a loud rattling noise from veh driver side rear glass-check and advise
Adjusted front and rear glass for concern"
further down it says
"open service campaign units:
Perform open service campaign
ordered parts for service update W615"
That may be the key info (W615)
Anyway, it doesn't rattle now!
Am taking a fall foliage drive tomorrow in the Ozarks and about 2 miles of the best road is under construction (like one lane thru the rocks). Will take camera for shot by a dozer. Hope it doesn't shake anything loose! This will be my 4th trip since April, it's getting better!
FYI, I'm taking Arkansas 23 south of Eureka Springs, AR (officially named the PIG TRAIL) East on AR 215 (construction, but some of the most beautiful (( almost alpine scenery)) along the Mulberry River), then south on 103 to I-40. This route must have been designed by the Porsche civil engineering dept! Very tight switchbacks and severe grade changes overall excellent pavement. Do need to share the road with leaf watchers and semis at times.
BTW, Check out Porsche Palozza @

It's next weekend!
Overall, I have nothing but praise for this car. After I bought it, I bought some Porsche stock. So far it's been like a rocket like the Cayman S!
Bob
Took the car back from the dealer after they "fixed the rattle" around the quarter glass panel.....Now, the rattle is LOUDER.....Wonder what those mickey mouse chaps did...
So, took my tools, and tried to tighten the already tight B-pillar bolt -- and I broke the darn bolt.....sigh...
I had mentioned previously as never to over tighten the bolt, as it is hollow...Apparently I did not heed my own advice....
And to make matters worse, I dropped a 15mm socket into the seat belt hole.....And have no idea how to get it out... Am such an idiot....!!!
Does anyone know how to get the socket out of the selt belt "hole".....
Lesson of the day: Be careful...be very careful on how much you tighten the B-pillar bolt.
As an FYI in a couple of my articles in our ARTICLES section I have the seatbelt area dissassembled for installing yellow seat belts as well as the article about painting the rear hatch pieces I have some shots that show the inside of the little side window and how it bolts up, etc.
As far as dropping a socket down that hole I think you are going to have to take it to the dealer for them to get it out unless you have a long gripper device and a fiber optic snake light.
