As for a 911 I have driven a 993 carrera on track and found the tail out bias, perfection for adjusting lines and awesome for sliding.

Suggestion

Running costs- hevily modified 911s can cost a heck of a lot to run, i know a 500+ bhp 993Turb that can cost the owner £2k a month to run.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

It is a 4wd six speed car, curvy 993 shape with the sloping round headlights. Last of the air cooled cars. Mileage could be anything - far too many other factors that determine price, like condition and colour. I assume it will be a RHD model with over 60k miles for this age and price. Running costs are heavy on Porsches of this nature. It is a sturdy car, but you have brake discs the size of dinner plates and tyres that make have to be rated to over 180mph. The publisher of Evo ran one for a while, and although it never let him down, it cost him 4k in one year. This was because he had the suspension geometry done religiously, put new brakes and tyres on it, plus I think a new clutch was involved. Servicing costs are more than n/a Porsche on turbo models, but remmeber the service intervals are wider spaced out than for Ferraris etc. Depreciation wise, well, it will. Only the RS models and some speculated/sought after models are holding their own. To drive, it is a quick car (0-60 in 3.9, 0-100 in 9.1) but was criticised at the time by the press for being uninvolving and not as exciting as it could have been (the 993RS is the driver's choice). However, Derestrictor will tell you that they can be fun when tuned - I am in awe of his 490bhp uberbeetle, which is a beast and a half. GT pack wise, well, I'm no expert here. They may have tweaked suspension a bit, as it needed it according to the road tests. More GT than RS as standard. Not sure it adds much to the value. Hope this helps a bit. Domster

POST 2Original post

I thought standard 993 TT put out 408bhp,,from '97 onwards you could get the GT2 engine upgrade which pushed out 430bhp....This is still enough!

POST 3Original post

Not sure what the GT pack bit means, as the usual production Porsche uprate was to Turbo S spec, so i guess it is some mods done by a Porsche tuner ie Roock Gemballa RS tuning etc etc. Running costs- hevily modified 911s can cost a heck of a lot to run, i know a 500+ bhp 993Turb that can cost the owner £2k a month to run. £45k seems a high price unless it is RHD and even than its got to be a sweet one.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

www.dealer.autotrader.co.uk/_richardskiba.htm the car is the one above and it looks fantastic but I have never really considered an older Porsche before. Currently drive an M3 SMG and am looking for something a bit more extreme

POST 5Original post

I've got that Immaculate 993 Turbo 4 for sale here (its my bosses car and he's away), 1996, 40k miles, I'd sell it for 45k or 44 to a Pistonheader 'cos I know it'd annoy him, must go this week or I think he's going to trade it in...aaarrgghh.

POST 6Original post

JJR1, The original 993TT can still be upgraded by OPCs to 'S' spec ito either a 430 or 450bhp power hike. I originally thought about this for mine but soon realised it was little more than a fleecing exercise by the oily pinstripes. I recall the price being somewhere around £13k which seemed OTT although it may have included expensive panel replacements like the air vents on the rear flarings, in similar fashion to the current 996TT. The cars are basically bombproof and make the generallity of Ferrari or TVR ownership seem like far too much hassle. I've never needed anything doing to mine so apart from servicing (all fixed price menus these days) and horrendous profligacy at the pumps I wouldn't worry, so long as the fPSH is authentic and nobody's scrimped... The basic car is ridiculously competent and will redfine adhesion as well as most (996 4wds, EVOs and Skylines excepted) and picks up like a scalded cat. Immediate traction during ultra precipitation means it's tag as 'the ultimate all-weather supercar' from a few years ago is still largely justified. But, it bounces off the rev limiter too easily and cries out for more crystals of the dilithium variety. A million and one tweakers are out there who can turn my delerium into your reality for sensible-ish wonga. Indeed I am currently debating the next step in my quest for Battlestar Galactic thrust which may see the magic 400bhp/tonne figure approached... All in all, you really can't lose. Join the club, the water's lovely!

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

An all round general thumbs up then by the sound of it...... I know that this is the antithesis of smooth driving but do these things oversteer properly as I need my weekly fix ?

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

that car has a GT2 bodykit and it looks awesome but unfortunately that maybe where me and this particular car may part company..... It has 75,000 miles and 3 owners with no stamped official servicing but just a large number of receipts. Now my quest starts for a similar looking car but with a bit more of a realistic price for condition/mileage etc.

POST 9Original post

If its oversteer you want dont get 4wd!! look for a 993GT2 if your budget allows = 2wd & no traction contol and very very raw. For a smaller budget get an earlier 964Turbo (965)preferably the 3.6, it also has 2wd & no traction control & 360bhp as standard and easily uprated into the 400+bhp area. They are LOTS of fun in the wet and flipping fast in the dry.

POST 10Original post

Yup, apparently the 993 Turbo 4's clever diff starts apportioning power to the front wheels when you hang the tail out... good for getting around corners, not so good for fangio stylee slides everywhere. Derestrictor waxes lyrical about the handling of his, so you get used to it. 993GT2 is 60-80k and pretty ridiculous, chalk to the cheese of a standard 993 Turbo 4. I wouldn't go for the Turbo 2s, although UVs is pretty lovely and so is Bernard Abram's. They cost a bit more to run as a general rule. The one for sale on PH sounds good for the miles at the money

POST 11Original post

At the end of the day, an excess of optimism over gravity will invariably see a reversion to type and the greater the power, the greater the abandonment of any mild 4wd capabilities...if you feel you can handle oversteer in one of these be my guest but in most cases such antics are probably best left to the pros or track days - or Domster! For me, this car has been a gradual learning process. I'm continually fondling my own risible limits (matron) on board but time yields many secrets of the 911's worthy mythology and every now and then some little nuance of jiggery pokery occurs, you come out the other side and exclaim something profound, like 'wow!' Old Dom reckons the 911 can be the ultimate 'drivers' car' and whilst I think there are more complete cars out there (EVO VII, sorry, yawn etc) little can reward like the pork. Sounds like b*ll*ck talk, no? Well actually, it's not! Go on - you know you want to! I do hope you partake.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The oversteer fun comes from a distinct lack of employing traction control while driving the M3 and this makes it awesome fun even at slow speeds. Deserted roundabouts in the wet have to be taken twice [wink] As for a 911 I have driven a 993 carrera on track and found the tail out bias, perfection for adjusting lines and awesome for sliding. The only problem I had with the car was a lack of poke in a straight line, having been spoilt by riding 1000cc motorbikes for the last few years. I then hankered after a 996 but after driving a C2 on a track I again was a bit dissapointed by straight line performance and severely unimpressed by the understeer ! You could get the rear out by trail braking or coming off the throttle very quickly but it was just not as fun and raw as I had hoped. That got me thinking along Turbo lines or a Noble M12 and at the moment the Turbo is winning, although I should really drive one just to make sure. Cheers guys for all the help so far and as gorgeous as a 993 GT2 might be I would like to keep the ££££'s down to a more realistic level.

POST 13Original post

Sounds like you need a 993RS. Cheapest I saw one recently was 33k LHD.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Is a car of this age a 2wd/4wd 5sp/6sp model and at £45,000 what would you expect mileage to be? What would you expect running costs to be like and likely depreciation? Is a GT pack just cosmetic or is there anything it adds under the skin?
