Try everyone and anyone, but beware that a lot of insurers are now stating that factory fitted options are "modifications".

Bigger battery and starter motor to support Auto-Start Stop, Diffuser, Particulate Filters, physically larger engine make up for most of this - also they cannot get the car certified with options fitted such as PCCB or Carbon Buckets.

First drive home went well, I’ve owned a 981 Spyder previously just couldn’t get away with the gearing or 3.8 engine so I parted with it after around 18 months and have been running a BGTS 981 PDK for the last year which I really like and was surprised at the different engine note , I actually think the 3.4 sounds better, not saying the 4.0 doesn’t sound well but it’s a lot quieter even with the exhaust switched on which really shocked me .

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 2Original post

Great idea 1 of each please Now to see when order books are opened

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

For the cost of a secondhand 991.2gt3 you could have both, no press release from porsche on specs and price yet though. The spyder is my pick of the two makes the 991 speedster look mega expensive!

POST 4Original post

£75,384 for the GT4, £73,405 for the Spyder.

POST 7Original post

The last ones weren't either, it's all down to build slots in whatever window Porsche have allowed for these to be built.

At those prices and a longer production run I can see the 981 cars prices slipping. £80-85k for a nicely specd 718gt4 / spyder why pay more than £70k for the older model

Auto-Start Stop and cylinder de-activation for the first time in GT Car.... So it will be running around town on 4 pots. But at least it exists! Edited by TDT on Monday 17th June 23:40

POST 16Original post

Both the new GT4 and Spyder have exactly the same power, torque, weight, acceleration figures and suspension ..My only concern is the quoted weight for both are 1420Kg DIn Empty.. Does this include the 75Kg Driver and luggage, if not they've put on an awful lot of blubber..Its nearly enough to put me right off them if i'm deciphering the figures correctly.

Like i said ChrisW basically already built this car - but he has better brakes and suspension. On the note.. off bed so i can be @ Donny bright and early.

Everything seems on point but it still has the same gearbox ratios as the 981 version.....

What exactly were you expecting then? And how was the gen 2 gt3 more different to the gen1 than with the gt4?

POST 25Original post

Hard to get excited with headline bhp and engine sizes when it’s put on weight and posts the same performance as the last one. Also looks very torque limited with that flat cut off. Nice car at the price, but not the mini GT3 every one wished for. 991.1 GTS any one, lighter, faster and with a better engine like the race car :-)

POST 26Original post

isaldiri said: The exact ruling re options is a bit vague but iirc it's supposed to be 'representative'. Probably just means declared factory weights are now merely quite far off rather than completely farcical.... The official empty weight of 1420Kg is very surprising and a full 45Kg heavier than the 718 GTS Cayman/Boxster..The new GT4 now weighs virtually the same as the 991.2GT3 RS which is even more perplexing. However i can testify to the fact that the EU official homologation weights are now for the car in 100% standard spec with zero options added, weight adding or weight reducing alike.. My 992S came with a Customer copy of the new factory WLTP spec for my personal specced car..It mentions the official homologated weight of 1515KG DIN weight and the 1590KG including 75KG driver + luggage..However there's also a separate weight figure for my actual 992 including my individual options..This figure is 1623KG including the 1590KG(inc 75KG driver) and a total extra 33KG for all the non standard additional cost extras..This also affects the emissions and fuel economy for my car.. This factory supplied sheet of paper was never supplied with any of my previous pre WLTP Porsches..

Personally, I'd take all factory weights with a massive pinch of salt still. declared weight of the .2 3rs is 1430kg. there is absolutely no way that is 100% standard spec car as Sport Auto weighed their car (full WP pack with mag wheels, no PCM but with a halo seat) and it was 1443kg. Ok that was closer than the gen1 which was nearer to 1500kg with the same declared weight but the factory weight is guaranteed not to be a 100% standard spec car imo.

POST 28Original post

One good thing about that particulate filter is it means we should have no issues with track day noise. The more I look the more I am drawn to the Spyder. Where on road enjoyment is harder to come by, flipping the roof down brings another element. Then with GT department development you know it will work on track.

POST 29Original post

Have to say I'm slightly underwhelmed - it seems like a slight evolution, which I'm sure will be improved all round, but not a game changer. The 4.0 with more power is very welcome, but it sounds like they haven't changed the gear ratios at all? Such an easy fix, why? Plus it looks pretty similar to the 981. The real snag is not limited production - what does that mean for value retention? I thought all GT products were limited? Or in the real world does that just prevent massive overs? I guess it all depends on how it's recieved by the motoring press. Don't get me wrong...I still want one...! However, the thing I wasnt expecting was how appealing the Spyder seems now (I had a 987 Spyder before my 981 GT4)! That rear looks immense! Although still think I'd have to go GT4... I wonder how allocations will work now they are not limited...?

POST 30Original post

They're still limited by production, just not by "x of x" badges.

POST 31Original post

They might be limited by production, but what is that production limit?? I had an M2 which was limited by production and they produced a lot!

POST 32Original post

Limited production - No Limited availability - 100% absolutely Porsche are not daft

POST 33Original post

I am guessing easy 2x 3x more what was suggested before produced.

POST 34Original post

If they produce a 718/6 with PDK then they really could sell them in volume. Even if production of the GT4 and Spyder isn't actually limited they will remain niche market cars.

POST 35Original post

Not quite sure why but I am underwhelmed. I was looking forward to this but had almost resigned myself to buying the 992 expecting I wouldn’t get allocation. Save myself some money with this (relatively) or wait for the inevitable 992 GTS it’s a shame there’s no PDK option but I can see why.

POST 36Original post

Folding buckets don't seem to be an option on the GT4 but they are on the Spyder, for the heated option I suspect. 911R won't be pleased...

POST 37Original post

Link to first Porsche video of the GT4: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMxAW1nm2D0

POST 38Original post

I’m going to use all avenues to get one. At a guess 85k with spec, heavier - still doesn’t put me off if honest.

POST 39Original post

There isn't a massive gulf between 991.1 and 991.2 GT3s, although the second gen is clearly better. Personally I think its a really great progression and its awesome that they've managed to get an N/A 6 in there. I've always felt the 718 was a good looking car, a GT4 is the first one I'd feel happy owning. I wouldn't be surprised if people think that a Cayman S feels quicker in day to day traffic with PDK and that boosty flat 4 though

POST 40Original post

Actually on 2nd look perhaps the new engine might deliver more shove in the last 1000rpm which would for me be a considerable improvement over the 981. Peak power is quoted I think at 7600 (8k limit) while peak torque has stayed constant despite the capacity increase so perhaps it's been tuned to keep up higher up the rev range. That imo was the biggest issue with the previous car rather than the gearing.

Might it then be possible to increase the rev limit further without the engine lunching itself?

POST 42Original post

Love the looks of the Spyder. For me that's the clear choice as a road car. Again, remarkably good value. Porsche keep doing it. However, the GTS and T variants don't look quite such good buys anymore. Unless you particularly wanted turbo torque and PDK why would you?

POST 43Original post

MDL111 said: so is it really a "detuned" GT3 engine with the same internals? Might it then be possible to increase the rev limit further without the engine lunching itself? No, I believe it is a bored out 3.0 from the carrera without the Turbo. Or at least I read that somewhere.

POST 44Original post

MDL111 said: so is it really a "detuned" GT3 engine with the same internals? Might it then be possible to increase the rev limit further without the engine lunching itself? I would guess a remap would liberate a few bhp but more to it than that. Be interesting to see precisely how they have detuned it.

POST 46Original post

From UK Motor 1. It's loosely based on the 9A2, from the 991.2

POST 47Original post

Not sure at this stage it is enough of an upgrade to buy one. A bit disappointing was expecting it to break 4.0 to 60 etc. Handicapped by new emissions on sound and pace?

POST 48Original post

I think people have got a bit too hung up on whether it's a detuned gt3 engine or not tbh. Take the engine as it is specs wise and it doesn't really matter whether it's a bored out 9A1, bored out 9A2 or detuned gt3 tbh. Revs to 8k, peak power high 7s, peak torque maintained till 6800. that doesn't exactly suggest a sluggish engine depending on whether the quoted terms are actually reliable!

That’s true although if based on the GT engine, there might be after market options for getting the engine speed / power up ala what people did with Mezger engines in the past to “overcome” the Porsche differentiation from the GT3 spec - mid-engined GT3 effectively

It probably will once the various publications get their hands on one and test 0-60mph. Porsche tend to be very conservative in their figures. Like others, am most interested to see if the extra torque from the 4.0 alleviates the most common 981 GT4 complaint around long gearing for road driving.

Best to forget about the drag race times for the GT4 IMO because judging it on that criteria it is slower than PDK equipped 718 GTS (4.1 sec).

POST 53Original post

Well i've just configured my spec online and its coming out at £98,429 for a clubsport car with the extras I wanted. Getting very close to 991.1 GT3 territory at that price www.porsche-code.com/PLVCLIV6

isaldiri said: Actually on 2nd look perhaps the new engine might deliver more shove in the last 1000rpm which would for me be a considerable improvement over the 981. Peak power is quoted I think at 7600 (8k limit) while peak torque has stayed constant despite the capacity increase so perhaps it's been tuned to keep up higher up the rev range. That imo was the biggest issue with the previous car rather than the gearing. The reason the max torque figure at 310lb/ft is identical to the 981 GT4 and 981 Spyder is that the six speed gearbox is strictly limited by EU licence to this torque figure..Even increasing the max torque by say 2lb/ft would necessitate developing a totally new gearbox which would have been cost prohibitive..I actually like the fact that they were legally unable to increase the torque figure as it forced Porsche's hand to develop more power higher up the rev range resulting in a higher rev limit.. The lack of top end sparkle was my main gripe with the 981GT4 so fingers crossed that the new one has a much racier character..

However, the GTS and T variants don't look quite such good buys anymore. Unless you particularly wanted turbo torque and PDK why would you? Interestingly it just over £14K to upgrade from a Cayman 718GTS to a 718GT4..By the same measure it costs a much more reasonable £10K+ to upgrade the Boxster 718GTS to the 718 Spyder..The new Spyder is the best buy especially given its new Motorsport developed track credentials over the 981 Spyder.

POST 58Original post

Configurator is already up but you have to go through a back door in the website...go to build your own, select an 'old' model like the 718 cayman S and then when the configurator window loads go to the top left and select 718 GT4 or Spyder from the list. there you go!

due to collect a Spyder later this week and just looking into getting insured, so far have only looked on comparison websites , Esure was the cheapest quote so far at £900 and they don't seem to be asking for a tracker. just wondering who people have ended up going with and if any of the specialist brokers are worth a call.

POST 67Original post

Try everyone and anyone, but beware that a lot of insurers are now stating that factory fitted options are "modifications". You may have to list every single option for your quote and policy to be valid. Check the small print. NFU Mutual, ClassicLine and (if you're in PCGB) Lockton are some of the most used at the moment.

POST 68Original post

Admiral for me on a multi car policy. I was with NFU for years but they increased premiums and demanded trackers. Admiral for 4 sports cars was less than NFU for the Turbo S. You’re right about the modifications/options which does make it a ball ache first time round or when changing a car. Don’t forget to tell them about PPF as well if you’ve got any on the car.

These three insurers are the only ones worth wasting one's time to phone up for quotes IME. The NFU are great if you don't need track cover, ClassicLine best for track day cover and Lockton the best policy overall as long as you only do PCGB track days.

POST 72Original post

Admiral for me too, by far, and I'm moving the family 'bus' to a multi-car policy with the GT4 this weekend, which according to the illustration saves me a further 17%. Having worked in Insurance marketing, I know how the algorithms work, how the comparison engines work in relation, and Admiral seem to be one of only. handful of companies currently playing with a straight bat when it comes to prices. Even though I asked/offered, I was told there was no longer the requirement to declare any manufacturer options, only the PPF (in my case) and a value. In the event of claim my purchase receipt/spec would be all that was need to verify the value and options against a market value and/or ROI claim.

POST 73Original post

I've just checked Admiral and it does state that optional extras are not modifications which is good! I'm sure that hasn't always been the case, so common sense seems to have prevailed

Twinfan said: I've just checked Admiral and it does state that optional extras are not modifications which is good! I'm sure that hasn't always been the case, so common sense seems to have prevailed You're right, that was the case when I insured a previous car through Admiral circa 2010-2015, which is why I was careful to ask the question when getting quotes for the GT4 last year. I was pleasantly surprised by the answer, it does seem like common sense has prevailed.

POST 75Original post

I insured mine through admiral last year (Sept) and still had to list the modifications (all optional extras) but they just marked them as interior modifications and exterior modifications (exterior just being the PPF). Good to hear that this has now changed as it’s a right pain with Porsche and everything being an extra!

POST 76Original post

I’ve been with Admiral for a good few years and they have always been competitive their app is great for making changes. I tried some of the specialist Porsche insurers and they were wildly more expensive which I found odd.

POST 77Original post

thanks I tried a quote with admiral this morning online and strangely they were not competitive for me at all, in fact one of the most expensive quotes I have had so far coming back at £1500, same price quoted from Porsche via their approved driveaway insurance broker. Esure currently is the cheapest at £890.

POST 78Original post

Admiral were also very quick & easy to deal with when our car got nicked last year, if that gives further reassurance. Albeit of course had to negotiate back & forth a number of times to get decent pay-out.

POST 79Original post

Admiral for me too. Three cars, the house with various high-value items listed separately & away from home.

POST 80Original post

Always a good idea to send your insurer a copy of your cars official spec sheet and invoice cost.

I've not mentioned the PPF. Looks like I need to make a call?

Ok Will maybe give them a call see if they will play ball . So I collected the car today under the drive away insurance , bit of a strange one as didn’t see this purchase coming, I was at a merc dealer next door on Monday and decided to pop into Porsche dealer to kill some time as I was waiting for some coding to be done and they had just taken this car in px the day before , I’ve been searching twice a day for a PDK Spyder in a bright colour ideally yellow or guards red since I was knocked back for a new one when they first come out , have to say I was unsure about the colour as when I first viewed the car it had just arrived was still filthy and was a wet dark day but seeing it today all cleaned up out in the sun knocked back any reservations I had ! It’s certainly quicker and the PDK box has a lot sharper change and I’m certainly sold on the Spyder looks. I didn’t managed to px my GTS so will run them side for a week just to be 100% sure, before advertising the GTS . Pic in the collection bay.

I got requotes that took the price down to below the prior year and then spoke to admiral. They shaved a few hundred off, but got nowhere near the quotes I’d got so I changed. It was a hassle getting all the separate quotes and then having very long discussions, but it saved over a grand so I did it.

I called Admiral today, their website quote was £400 more than than it was on one of the comparison sites for the same cover, they said they would match the comparison site quote but wouldn't match any other insurer, I asked about multi car policies and if they would insure my classics but they said its not their area so doesn't look as though they will be getting my business this year. So back to the search...

Yes drove from Poole in Dorset at 3.30am arrived near Arezzo Tuscany at 8.58pm the same day, got pulled by the Italian Police for document check near Arezzo near the end of the journey. Had I very high speed convoy from Épernay this morning with two GT4’s and an Aston Martin Vantage, no Police about as they probably had their hands full with rioters.

The 718 with JCR is slightly quieter but with what I'd describe as a very real , bassey, deep sound - both sound epic, but they are different. I would say the later car sounds more grown up if that makes sense ? How does the JCR (with stock GPFs) compare in terms of volume against the 991.2 GTS (or any other 991.2 with PSE)?
