Had a mate round with his 996 turbo to replace what we thought was a noisy alternator, already previously replaced a belt idler, fitted the alternator but still has what sounds like a noisy bearing.

Suggestion

Firstly the water pump bearing was well past it use by date, lucky for me I had a new spare from a previous car that didn't get fitted and secondly the Alternator bearing is loud on a cold start however runs ok once warm a job for over the winter.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Asking for a friend ...... Had a mate round with his 996 turbo to replace what we thought was a noisy alternator, already previously replaced a belt idler, fitted the alternator but still has what sounds like a noisy bearing. The noise only starts after a few seconds of running not immediately on start up. Any ideas ? It appears to be from the left side of the engine. No specialists where we live without an expensive ferry ride so any help appreciated :dont know:

POST 2Original post

the secondary air pump? A/C compressor, but that's on the right? Power steering pump, check levels water pump, that's on the left

POST 3Original post

Similar post somewhere in this section, diagnosed as a timing chain tensioner. :dont know:

POST 4Original post

When trying to find noises, I use a 1m length of fuel pipe or similar, stick one end against your ear and move the other end around, you will pinpoint it in seconds if it is a bearing. MC

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks guys, the owner has decided to book it in with a specialist. I will update when the problem is found :thumb:

POST 6Original post

This is a really good tip. P.s. Pretty sure secondary air pump is on the right in turbo. Left on M96 engine cars

POST 7Original post

The Fix Hi all Turned out to be a two fold problem The car went to Cavendish Porsche yesterday had a slow but steady drive there and and a very wet but fun drive back down south. Firstly the water pump bearing was well past it use by date, lucky for me I had a new spare from a previous car that didn't get fitted and secondly the Alternator bearing is loud on a cold start however runs ok once warm a job for over the winter. Also had the car serviced and a good look over, just need the summer to arrive and start using the car.
