Did some more digging and checked on the parts catalogue.
Leading evidence: 'Check on the parts catalogue' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check on the parts catalogue' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. I replaced both using EUAutopartsltd as the seller.

That is to sort out the window problem – it drops when either handle is used but then rises when the handle is released with the door still open.

Has anyone bought one recently and could recommend a supplier?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Finally got the window drop problem fixed by fitting a new door lock actuator.
I am looking for a door lock actuator (right/drivers' side) for my old 986 that shares the part with 996s. I understand that an Audi actuator (TT Mk1?) is the same unit so a none-original part could be had a decent price. The one I had suggested on eBay was from a Chinese seller (prefer to avoid) who was out of stock anyway
Has anyone bought one recently and could recommend a supplier?
Thanks
Chris
I replaced both using EUAutopartsltd as the seller. They worked in my 98 996.1 C2 cabrio.

I think the important bit is getting the 9 pin, not 8 pin version.
Thanks , they are out of stock at present. I have asked them when they will be available. I have also seen some for a little more but with a 5 year guarantee.
Is it not part number 8N1837016B?
Not as many cheapies about at the moment, but pretty sure this is the one..

I remember being told to get the 9 pin version and mine work on my 98 996 Cabrio. I replaced both as the wheel and sensor were badly worn.
P.S. Does the Tycho forum name origin, come from The Expanse series?
My favourite Sci Fi of the last few years.
Sorry just read your reply.
I saw that one & thought it should be compatible but I checked with the seller and they reckon it would not fit. Still trying to decipher the different part numbers but it does look right to me, might have to take a chance.
Tycho is from the moon crater, named after a 16th century Danish astronomer who lost part of his nose in drunken duel about maths! He was supposed to have a false nose made of silver & gold. They don't make them like that anymore.
Did some more digging and checked on the parts catalogue. 8N1837016B is listed as right-side left-hand drive, 8N2837016B is right-side right-hand drive. So, are these the same / interchangeable? I will continue the detective work & make some call next week and maybe see if deMort can give a definitive answer.
Any suggestions gratefully received.
Yes, the parts catalogue for a 98-05 C2 RHD shows 8N2837016B as a drivers side lock.
https://www.deroure.com/diagrams.asp?TBL=2640&MAK=3&MDL=25&SMA=0&SMO=0&ST=&SC=0
Which is the same part number which comes up for a MK1 Audi TT.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=8N2837016B&_sacat=0&_sop=15
Yet, as you say, all the ones on Ebay use the part number for LHD right hand side, which would have no feed from the lock barrel.
There's something lost in translation here. This one uses the LHD part number, but claims RHD drivers/offside/RHS. Either the part number is wrong or the description is wrong.

If it has the slot for the lock barrel, it should be correct. I'd do a bit of comparing to photos of the 8N2 part.
Had the Boxster for 16 months and now I learn that there only a key slot on the driver's side. Never thought about it, my 993 has key slots on both sides – progress or cost reduction? Went out and checked the Skoda, yes only one key slot, I must be just used to old cars.
I have already contacted the seller on the last ad & they say it will not fit a 1998 Boxster although they list it for Audi TTs driver's side no mention LHD/RHD. Looking at their pictures I note that there is a plastic part (in red) that would need trimming to work, the modification is shown online. I am getting more confused!
Fan relays are a standard 4 pin relay .. you could get similar from halfords .
Your not going to have x2 relays fail at the same time though .. sorry i didn't read this entire thread but what is the issue ?
if its low speed fans not working on one or both sides then the resistor pack is the fault 90% of the time .
Thanks, deMort. It is the passenger side fan that is not working at either speed, received wisdom seems to be that it will be the ballast resistor. I have got a couple of panel resistors (one to use, one spare if/when I need to do the other side) to do the fix that I found on the forum.
So that is one job scheduled but I am still trying to source a reasonable cost driver's side door lock. That is to sort out the window problem – it drops when either handle is used but then rises when the handle is released with the door still open. My efforts to find a pattern handle (8N2837016B) have so far been fruitless. Spending on my Boxster is governed by head rather that for my 993 which is definitely a heart decision!
Finally got the window drop problem fixed by fitting a new door lock actuator. I went the genuine Porsche part route. Cost more but I did not want to have to redo the job and some Far Eastern pattern parts are not too reliable. Fan also repaired with a new ballast resistor.
Thanks for the suggestions.
My theory ..
If the original Porsche part lasted 15 years plus then a new one will last at least the same ..
I always bang on about Porsche parts but it is for good reason .. it's more expensive but it will last longer and it will be correct out of the box .
I've seen cheaper alternatives on various parts .. things like a/c condensers fair enough , they can suffer external damage .. things like ignition lock connections .. hmm .
Things like window regulators .. not a good idea to go cheap !!
