Late 2009 CS, 20k miles - dead battery (now replaced OEM with a Bosch and all is well) - couple of rattles (sorted by removing and refitting engine cover) - other than that all is good...

Hi Doofus, just read your experience with the clutch ; I also have a 2.9L, done 55000 miles and have been told the clutch is wearing so would probably need replacing soon.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just bought a 2010 manual transmission
Cayman
and wondered what the most common 4 or 5 problems with it might be. I've read a lot on the forums but many times posters don't specify what year
Cayman
they have so you don't know if your reading about a gen 1 or gen 2. I know several of the engine problem in the gen 1 ( like intermediate shaft issues) were fixed in the gen 2s. Not sure if water pumps are still a problem, then there is the oil separator issue, etc. Perhaps if posters started listing their cars it would help with this issue. Thanks for the help.
I bought my 2010 base

2009 CS with
PDK
. Black with beige interior. No real problems with 40,000 miles. Minor problems, paint peel on center console, headlight washers blew off,
Bose
radio AM has basically no reception, fine on FM. Been a great car. Plan on keeping it for quite awhile.
I have a 2011
Cayman
, no problems with the car so far, just a minor sensor issue with the cluch being depressed for starting the car. The dealer replaced the sensor while I waited, no biggie. Good car, very reliable.
2010
Cayman
. 53K miles.
@26K miles missing/leaking coolant/overheating... looked like blown head gasket - turned out to be blown head bolts - got a brand new engine
dead battery (wouldn't hold a charge after setting at dealer for a month due to above)
clutch interlock switch (twice)
shifter cable
strut bearing
Had my 2009 for 47k miles. Only problems were clutch interlock switch (3 times), finally solved with revised part under
Porsche
Service Campaign, and weeping Air Oil Separator (at about 40k miles), which I had rather expensively replaced because I don't like even occasional drips -they have a habit of turning into catastrophic failures in the most inconvenient places at the most inconvenient times.
Late 2009 CS, 20k miles - dead battery (now replaced OEM with a Bosch and all is well) - couple of rattles (sorted by removing and refitting engine cover) - other than that all is good... love it!

Cayman 2.9L
6spd 30K miles. Had it one year, 2nd owner, put 12K miles on it. Clutch slipped had to be replaced, this was mainly due to me letting a friend drive it and it came back smoking. Clutch lasted 6 more months before it went after that. Can't put it solely down to friend as don't know how previous driver drove.
They replaced the clutch switch at the same time, I believe a TSB was put out for it last year.
Clutch $2500
Shift cable just broke, less than 30 days after clutch got replaced, unknown if it just went or something to do with dealer replacing clutch.
Cable $1000, extended warranty paying $500.
Other than that, no paint peeling at console, no waterpump failure and no radio problems like some have mentioned throughout this forum.
Enjoy your car..I love mine despite the costly repairs of recently.
DFI engines usually have carbon buildup problems. Need to be cleaned every 50k or so on other cars I know.

Hi Doofus, just read your experience with the clutch ; I also have a 2.9L, done 55000 miles and have been told the clutch is wearing so would probably need replacing soon. If i buy the parts from
Porsche
shop UK for under £250 , my local garage has quoted £350 to fit. Also just had the Air/Oil separator changed as I was sometimes getting white smoke on cold start up; I bought the part for£75 and local garage charged £140 to fit....no more smoke! Also bought the oil/ filter.... Oil/... And garage charged £45 to do the job. What I'm suggesting is that supplying the parts yourself and getting your local friendly garage to fit them works out a lot lot cheaper...... saying that, I would still use a
Porsche
specialist if the job needed the relevant expertise for a certain repair (engine/gearbox) etc. But luckily the work I've had done so far is common to most cars, brakes, discs, servicing. Hope this post helps in the future and happy driving!
I'm betting Doofus won't be reading your tips since he hasn't even logged-in to P9 in over 5 yrs. BTW the post you're replying to is over 6.5 yrs old. ♻
The bright side of resurrecting this old thread is that the years haven’t exposed very many niggles with
987.2
. Yay! Fwiw my ‘11 CS has 40k miles and only problem has been thermostat that stuck open at around 35k. It’s a peach.
2010
Cayman S
, approx. 44k miles. have owned her for 5 years. Steering pump and some suspension parts changed under extended warranty. Left rear strut. Some tensioner parts changed. Have some of the black AC sponge (filter) stuff once in a while.
Apart from that, normal wear and tear.. touch on wood.
