Suggestion

I appreciate the philosophy, that it has sufficient filtered oil in the area to keep it clean but the LN bearing I felt definitely had suffered from contamination.

Suggestion

I presume your 3.6 had the smaller bearing (otherwise it would need an engine rebuild to replace it) and if so it is incorrect to say we replace them - all our engine rebuilds have the larger ball bearing that is proving exceptionally reliable Worldwide but cannot be replaced (if it was ever needed) without an engine rebuild.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Went to my local Indy for a service and they found metal in the oil filter if my C4S. It had the LN bearing 15k miles ago , the single row upgrade . I am surprised at the low miles It was fitted by RPM Technik so done properly. What's my best option now , can I fit the OEM upgraded bearing , or should I go EPS from RPM this time ? Any other possible causes of the metal in oil . It's now out of action till at least end of June when they can fit me in - just as bloody lockdown is easing

POST 3Original post

15k miles ouch. A friend with a 3.6 has kept his LN bearing that was removed after 30k miles and feels pretty gritty, I suspect it wouldn't have lasted long if left. I spoke to two garages who advise fitting the latest iteration of the genuine bearing. That's what I fitted in my own 3.6 and had no problem in the 15k miles I drove.. I sold the car with no issue or worries. I believe Hartech also fit the original bearing with the inner seal removed, I think that's pretty much what the LN bearing is. I appreciate the philosophy, that it has sufficient filtered oil in the area to keep it clean but the LN bearing I felt definitely had suffered from contamination. I'm torn whether sealed bearing of open bearing is best. My original bearing was running fine at 113k miles when removed. Outer seal was still holding. Mainly I'd fit a sealed bearing just consider the seal might be breaking down after 30k miles so bearing 'might' need replacement at any point after that. Keep an ear on it each service and replace if you hear it making any noise. As I said, mine that came out after 113k miles was fine. Original clutch too.

POST 4Original post

Put your original one back in if you still have it, but remove the dust sheilds off it so the engine oil lubricates it. Id then ask place that did the job for a full refund.

POST 5Original post

I presume your 3.6 had the smaller bearing (otherwise it would need an engine rebuild to replace it) and if so it is incorrect to say we replace them - all our engine rebuilds have the larger ball bearing that is proving exceptionally reliable Worldwide but cannot be replaced (if it was ever needed) without an engine rebuild. We are currently testing something no one else has tried that has a higher specification than any others we are aware of in both radial and axial loads and CAN be replaced if ever needed without stripping the engine - watch this space! POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

How soon? I can't drive it right now for fear of major damage ! So if they fitted the LN single row, can this be replaced again with another type ? :?:

POST 7Original post

Apologies for my error Barry, poor memory. No slanderous remarks intended. The LN bearing fitted to the car I've seen was a direct replacement to standard, no machining alterations.. so he directly replaced it with a standard Porsche bearing. Your local should be able to do a quick measurement as a sanity check and buy the replacement part for ~£35
