My check engine light came on two days after I did a oil change at a shop. Anyone had this problem? What are some recommendations and is it costly to diagnose the problem at the
Porsche
dealership?
Thanks in advance
The dealer will probably charge one hours worth of labor to hook the car up to the computer. You can also just go to Advance Or AutoZone, where they will read codes for free and you can then post here for what the code means.
Many thanks sir! One important question - is it safe to drive the car long or short distant? I had some horror stories w my other cars and I don't want anything happen to this baby.
That's a loaded question, without knowing the code. If the CEL is flashing, you definitely should not drive it. Do you have a manual? Here's one of the references.
Check Engine Warning Light
The warning light in the instrument panel comes on when the ignition is first turned on and remains on briefly as a bulb check. If the light does not come on, have the bulb replaced promptly.
If the warning lights in the instrument panel and on-board computer come on and remain on while driving, it suggests:
– a potential engine control problem and the need for system service or
– an improperly fastened tank
cap
or
– refueling with engine running.
Please observe the chapter ”WARNINGS ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL AND THE ON-BOARD COMPUTER” on page 138.
Although the vehicle is usually driveable and will not require towing, see your dealer for service as soon as possible.
Caution!
If the Check engine light in the instrument panel is ashing, severe
catalytic converter
damage and power loss will soon occur. Prolonged driving with the Check engine light on could cause damage to the emission control system. It also could affect fuel economy and driveability.
Have the fault remedied at the nearest authorized
Porsche
dealer immediately.
I hope I forgot to fasten the tank
cap
...
Read the codes and go from there. I just had a long bout of check engine light being on because I delayed on my oil change and the crud fouled up the hydraulics of the cam sensor. You don't want this. Luckily my dealer talked me into getting the oil changed and running the snot out of it for 1000 miles to clear the oil holes in the cam sensor. Going on 1600 miles now since then and the light has been off for about a week. If this is the problem, the light will come one for awhile (days) then go off for a similar length of time, in shortening intervals until it stays off.
This might have nothing to do with your car though. Get the codes and have a mechanic interpret them first.
I have a similar problem after the car sits for 3-4 weeks. These cars are meant to be driven. Keeping them as a garage queen does them no favors. I found someone to drive mine since I'm gone so often for weeks on end. Let's see... We have dog walkers, maybe we need
Porsche
drivers too??
The shop refused to clear the CEL because it probably doesn't have a computer to do so.
As long as it's not flashing and the engine is NOT exhibiting any untoward behavior you can drive the car. The CEL should go off on its own after a few trips.
Or buy an OBD2 code reader and clear the code and extinguish the CEL yourself.
thanks thanks hopes it goes off by itself
Update: I had the plugs changed today at 43K in an attempt to eliminate misfire codes after a long storage. It sure seems like the car is starting better & winding out to upper RPMs more freely. Maybe it's my imagination?
The results are not your imagination but probably not due to the plugs.
43K miles is not an excessive number of miles on the plugs.
If the storage was too long the misfires were probably due to the gas going stale.
My experience with a new Infiniti that had stale gas months old gas is that after I ran the stale gas out of the tank and refilled with fresh the engine ran markedly better.
I am having the p2189 problem as well, did you ever find a solution for this?
