Check body seams for cracks/rust in seam sealer or shoddy panel replacement work.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm looking at buying this 996 in Glacier White 6 speed manual with 110k miles. Its got a salvage title, door damage which has been repaired (see picture).
The owner has some service records from a reputable shop in his area, I'm planning on calling them to get a better picture of the maintenance history.
Front bumper needs replacing, interior is a bit scratched up (for Porsche standards) and has some aftermarket bits here and there (short shifter, non oem tail lights which i'm not a fan of, aftermarket head unit). Owner also mentionned a small oil leak (no drip but oily around the oil pan).
I'm pretty well equipped tool wise (short of a lift) and mechanically inclined (repaired and owned multiple cars such as an FD RX7, Toyota MR2 Turbo, many NA Miatas, rebuilt and restored my entire 2002 Tacoma frame, etc). My goal with this car would be to create a gt3 replica by adding an Aerokit (non oem) and basic maintenance with upgrades as I go (brakes, suspension, wheels).
Seeing as I'm not looking for a perfect car but a driver's car, I don't mind buying a car that needs a bit of TLC. I think I would pay for a PPI and inspect for bore score, which is my main concern. For me anything that can be done without taking the engine out or sending the car for a complete repaint is not something I am scared of doing myself, I have taken multiple cars apart, from clutch replacements to brakes to suspension and interior.
In my area, non salvage cars go from around 30k USD to 50k USD (40-70k Canadian) depending on spec and mileage. I've seen a 996.2 with salvage title and Aerokit sell for 23k USD (32k Canadian). However, that car seemed to be mostly original with some GT3 parts.
My question is, how much is it worth? Seller is asking about 17500 USD for it. I think that is a bit high, I'm thinking of negotiating to around 14-15k USD (19-20k Canadian).
The car is a 3h drive away and it's currently winter. My plan is to go and see it in a couple weeks once its nicer out and inspect it myself. If everything looks good to me, negotiate a price on the condition that the PPI comes back looking good.
No..... There are too many decent ones out there to have to deal with this.
Aside from the obvious repaired damage, etc. I will avoid any cars with all the slick mods such as that bumper, Alcantara wheel, etc. but that still have obvious, glaring faults such as the airbag cover. Makes me wonder what other not so obvious choices the owner(s) made.
Not trying to be negative, but if I had $17,500 (USD) to *spend* on a 996, and somebody offered me this one
for free
and then I spend the $17,500 upgrading it...I think I could find a better car for $17,500.
Just out of curiosity, are you guys from Canada or the states?
From my understanding, it looks like there are more cars for sale in the US market which drives the prices down. Over here, there are literally no other coupe manual 996's for under 30k CAD that have been listed in the past year.
I'd love to find a perfectly sorted car for around 17.5k USD (24-25K Cad), but that seems totally impossible nowadays.
What's that supposed to mean?
Me asking doesn't have anything to do with me not knowing what's a good idea and what's not. Maybe the thread title is a bit misleading, what I'm asking is if the car is worth the price (clearly not, according to your replies, and I was also under that impression) and if not how much it would be worth.
Just to be clear, the door damage has been repaired in case some of you missed that part.
From other people's opinion in Facebook groups, this is more of a 10-13k car (so about 13.5-17.5k CAD).
I'm no expert of any sort, but this looks more like the $10k-$13k range that your facebook group suggested. I skimmed the first post initially, and missed that you were in Canada. I have no idea of the market up there, but here in the States I wouldn't look twice at this car for $17k.
But hey, if the engine is in good condition, and you can talk him down several thousand, maybe it could be the drivers car you're looking for. I'd just be afraid its going to be a money pit.
Just my opinion, worth exactly what you paid for it.
Thanks for your input, however I messaged the seller about my thoughts and concerns about the price, but he wouldn't budge. I guess I'll start searching for a car in the US lol.

That means, you seem to be a car guy as you've built numerous cars like the Miata, Toyota MR2 Turbo, and RX7 in your first post, very nice cars...
So you already know your claim that it had some "door damage" is far from the truth and more like a wish thats all that happened to it...
The rear quarter panel and door jam pillar are damaged. Thats structural damage more than likely in that jam. Its takes a high skill level/time to get a repair like that done correctly.
For a salvage title car without insurance paying the bill its highly unlikely it got that type of attention. I've repaired cars like that in the past. To have door closing/opening like new, no wind noise at speed, no window water leak problems, is time consuming and needs skills. Good chance the roof/rocker panel was even buckled, and/or the inner structure bent.
If you're really serious about this totaled salvage title car, Go see this car in person and closely look down the side of it to see the waves it more than likely has. Check paint/body filler depth...? Check body seams for cracks/rust in seam sealer or shoddy panel replacement work. Open and close the door, if needed check that against a 996 that never got crashed. Roll up/down the window. Spray the car with water to check for leaks, back windows also. Drive on highway to hear for wind noise from door/windows..? Hey, maybe its perfect, won't know till you check it. Just another load of problems to rule out of a 996 purchase, like a 996 doesn't have enough already...
Then again, you may not care about any of those things...?
Just make no mistake of why this type damage usually totals a old car.

I’m with allcool. Too many unknowns. Will it leak? Will it whistle? Will it rust after a year from undercarriage or body water intrusion? Is the frame straight on left rear? That was a big hit to do that to a 996 body.
Oh I totally agree, its way more than door damage. In any case I kind of let go the idea of buying it since the seller isn't willing to lower his price. I guess I'll keep my eyes open for another one, and try to find a good condition one locally to test drive to get an accurate baseline of what a healthy and well maintained 996 c2 should feel like.
That rear door pillar damage usually requires sectioning the car,, its right where the chassis takes most of the stress,
keeping ay kind of filler in that area after painting is a 50-50 option at best. Its a brutal repair from what I've seen if done correctly.
