I was just out for a drive, gave it a bit of stick but nothing crazy, when I got home and parked there was steam pumping out of the passenger side vent behind the door. There was some crackling noise and then quite a lot of water dripping onto the floor. Pretty sure it's not coolant.
Pix and video:
Any suggestions as to what this might be?
To rule out coolant, wipe up, put a piece of white paper check for color on any further drips. Also, check the coolant level, check the wiper fluid reservoir. Was it outside? Has there been snow or weather? Could it be from another source.
The exact same thing happened to me early-mid 2020. After a spirited drive and then parking and shutting off the car, there was white smoke/steam coming out of the passenger side grill and liquid literally spewing out from the bottom (same area as in your picture). Towed it in to my indy and they couldn't find anything wrong with it. Then I drove it away with nothing wrong with it, like nothing ever happened.
I got something like it was coolant filled too much and with some pressure the coolant get out to the coolant exit who's near the exhaust (thats why you see smoke on vent)...
Check if some coolant are near caps cover near coolant and oil fill.
Turned out to be the Coolant Expansion tank - a crack which he said is very rare
Ho ok i was near to the problem then haha how much to replace?
Part is $250 in US (I'm not) and they can't get stock so I'm tring to fine one from a breakers
I hope that's the only problem, he said he could not do a pressure test because of the crack. Will update then
I also assumed my problem was a coolant expansion crack. But my indy didn't find a crack, and found no problems with a pressure test. Otherwise 've been driving it since (10 months now) and had no problems.
crosses fingers
Not rare at all - rather common. BTW, none-in-stock seems ruled out by a simple eBay search:
For: Porsche 987 07-12 Boxster Cayman Coolant Expansion Tank Genuine 98710604703 | eBay
- and there are others available..
Thanks, I don't live in the US and the guy was unable to find from his local suppliers, but I found one used in breakers yard, hope it will be OK..
I would not buy a used expansion tank. This is to common of a problem to gamble on a used tank.
