2017 Porsche 911 Carrera Test ? Review ? Car and Driver
Holy cow is all I can say!
Just imagine what a Cayman/Boxster could do with the same gearing as the 911...
Saw this today. Those numbers are legitimately quick. Quicker than an early Gallardo or F430 for sure. The grip number is almost as impressive. Porsche usually doesn't go after maximum grip in its base cars.
Keep in mind, this test car was 3300 lbs. A 718 S could be 200 lbs lighter. However, the motor will likely have a narrower power band due to the smaller displacement.
This makes me excited to see what the Carrera S can do and a GTS version with, perhaps, 450hp?
The 3.4 second to 60 number is a combination of PDK, rear weight bias, but mostly, excellent torque.
Those numbers are absolutely mind blowing and ridiculous for a base car. The Carrera would have been in Super car territory with those figures just 5 short years ago. Wow

The 718S with the PDK will probably be as quick. This is insane.
This article was a great read. It confirmed a few things in my mind. The new Base Carrera is the car to get. Why pay another $14k for the same displacement engine with just a bit more boost? And the 991.2 GTS will probably be another $10k on top of that for the same displacement engine with a little bit more boost.
0-60mph in 3.4 secs is friggin fast. (faster than the 991.1 GTS) Too fast for the street. Who needs that? Save the extra $14k and get the exact options you want. (Except for SPASM and PDCC which isn't available on the base) http://********.com/forums/images/smilies/frown.gif
I was really impressed with the 991.2 C2S that I drove in May and am looking forward to a 3 day extended drive next weekend. I like the 991.1 but the 991.2 just blows it away. I can definitely see myself owing a 991.2 in the future.
" But now that the mid-engined siblings have gone to turbo four-cylinder power, the Carrera is the cheapest way to get Porsche’s classic engine configuration into your driveway. That said, it ain’t exactly a pittance. Our reasonably optioned test car rang the bell at $110,970, and the $90,395 base price is roughly equal to what a Carrera S retailed for when the 991 series launched for 2012. "
No, it is not as quick. Mission accomplished, Porsche marketing.
Cheers
I don't disagree that the base Carrera is a better "value" given its performance numbers (still hard to believe 3.4s 0-60) and while yes that's more performance than anyone really needs for the street there will ALWAYS be those who want more power, faster times, etc. Those people will easily have their pocketbooks separated from their hands by the S and Turbo models.
Nice article. The only thing I would change would be to replace the hyphen with a comma between the words silly and quick.
I wonder if this car is too much for street driving? Too much power and low end torque that even with a manual, little opportunity to explore even a tiny fraction of the car's capabilities. And with the muted sound and the coupe body, you have a very fast missile. And I really want one.
I came away from my back-to-back tests of 4 variants of the 991.2 thinking the base Carrera with a manual gearbox would be a VERY usable street car, and the most entertaining to drive of the current lineup. Yes, it's crazy fast if you wring it out all the way through a couple of gears...but for squirting through holes in traffic all you would need to do is stay between 3500 and 5000 RPM. To get the same outcome, I need to be between 4500 and 7000+ in my GTS. I didn't find the car I drove (no PSE) particularly muted...sounded quite throaty, in fact, to me. The only thing I'm not liking about about the 991.2 is there is currently no Aerokit available...no Sport Design kit...not even a ducktail to jazz up the body a bit. On the other hand, a 718 is probably near as quick for $20k less and looks awesome just as it is.
