Both my Spyder's were kept in the garage with the top off and used on sunny weekend drives.

The car is running perfectly, is a delight to drive fast or slow and suits the island roads well, being smaller than later 911's and with factory specified tyres that mean the alloys don't get damaged if you have to mount the kerb.

Having something like the Targa or a GTS would give me something I'd likely use more of the time, but I'd have that nagging feeling I'd lost something special.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Is it winter closing in, have I turned soft or have it gone mad?
Found myself looking at a 997 Gen2, Targa 4S today. Silver, red interior, lots of options, extra leather etc.
Always liked the lines of them and they are a fairly uncommon sight.
........ But, a replacement for the Spyder?
It's that 911 itch going on, but I have a deep suspicion I would seriously regret getting rid. Got onto talk of a test drive, but I think I will hold back.
Now 981 Spyder confirmed, I'm not so sure that's right.
They are getting so dear currently that other models are now better value for money. It's a bubble that may not last?
it will last, it has with most other classics. we are car lovers and as long as we are it will go on. beter than paying to watch overpaid ----------- kick a ball round a pitch

Not confirmed at all, and if one does come out it will be a 4 pot. Which will make the 2010 model rise even more.
I do think the car bubble will burst but the Spyder is not at the top of it yet, euro zone is worse off than the UK and Spyders are more than UK prices,
Spyders are under valued still looking at other rare cars. End of a era bespoke classic not affected by new cars, ( well in manual ) :-) gen 1 PDK is a bit rough round the edges vs the 981 gen 2pdk but a manual car is was it is and will not date.
Big price devide will happen imo. Like the tip tronic 993 vs manual 993.

981 Spyder defo confirmed. Trust me.
where is the confirmation?
some sales person who does not know what they are talking about as usual they are kept in the dark like the rest of us!even the much talked about gt4 might end up being an R.
imho any of last 9*7.2 are the cars that will be most sort after in years to come as we already know there is not much love for the 9*1.1 just take a look on the used opc website for confirmation!very few late low mileage 9*7.2 but 9*1.1 a plenty!
Hmmm... Think I was having one of those moments where a change seems like a good idea but not really thought through.
As much as I like the Targa I don't have that deep feeling/lust inside to swap the Spyder. I like the fact it is a bit different to the other 997s though and not a common choice.
My heads not telling me 100%... So where there is doubt, there is no doubt. No change.
But if I was going to scratch the 911 itch I think a 997 GTS (RWD) would be more my thing. Or forget about modern models and get a 993. If a 997 GTS was sat there at the same price point, right options, I would be having a very difficult decision to make.
As for the 981 Spyder, I've not picked up anything hinting at that yet. Even if it did come about, I don't think it would have that big effect on the 987 Spyder. I don't think a new one would be as daring with the roof solution or bodywork changes. The 987 will always be the original and with sales of that being relatively small I can see the next one being a dumbed down version of the concept. Looked at a Boxster GTS also today and that really did nothing for me. No desire to swap the Spyder with that.

It's not from a salesman...
Trust me, I am from the internet.
As for 987.2 Spyders, I agree that they are very special things but I might be biased because I'm looking for one of them. I recently saw one at a OPC, it was parked next to a brand new 981 Cayman GTS, 981 Boxster and a 997.2 C2S and all these other cars seemed to pale in comparison.
I can't put my finger on why, but the Spyder looks even more impressive in person and it feels much more "exotic" than it has any right to be. I think prices will stay firm even if a 981 Spyder comes out, simply because the 987.2 was a great car platform, arguably the last of its kind, but many Porsche collectors wouldn't want to be seen in a run-of-the-mill Boxster S (sorry) so the Spyder/CR will be the logical choice.

If there is sum truth in a spyder or cayman gt4/r coming next year then porsche must be doing away with a gen2 981 as they always save the specials to the end of the gen2.so it stands to reason that the next boxster/cayman will be the 982 with its new engine? Likewise I think the same can be said for the 991 becoming a 992.
Back to targa I think it's a nice looking car but top heavy and 4 wd and also the roof can have a few expensive issues. IMHO a nice c2s / Gts is a better sideways step from the spyder

Actually I think the gen2 targa is a bit more than a nice looking car, it's a great looking car!
The only issue I have with the Spyder as anything more than a sunny weather, weekend toy is the roof. Just not every-day practical unless you keep it on - and then what's the point? Both my Spyder's were kept in the garage with the top off and used on sunny weekend drives. They're perfect for that.

Does it have aluminium parts in the interior for PDK and handbrake?
If so, could be the ex-Silverstone Demo?
Targa is a very rare sight on the road, its too heavy to be a direct replacement for the Spyder, very different drives.

Just to echo this really..
I think I would regret selling the Spyder on right now. Having something like the Targa or a GTS would give me something I'd likely use more of the time, but I'd have that nagging feeling I'd lost something special.
For the money, I just don't know what offers the driving thrills/purity, rarity, uniqueness. It's not a simple options special with the bodywork changes and roof.
It does punch above the weight of the 'humble' boxster roots with how special it feels.

I don't think it would be one of the same. It's based in Jersey and I've seen it on the roads over the years.
It's 2010, 9500 miles, up for 45k.
However it has been on the forecourt for ages now. Salesman says it won't shift because it is manual.
If there really is a new Spyder in 12 months time I'll be letting mine go next spring.
Still fancy a 4C, but having just taken delivery of a new M3 early indications suggest the Spyder (or a replacement) won't be getting much use.
I'd like to try and off-load it whilst prices are high if and when I let it go.

You're right, that car has been for sale for an age... I went and had a look at it in June but to be honest I thought it looked a bit tatty and uncared for considering the age & mileage.
I'm sure it was only £42k at the time, so there is definitely a deal to be done.
They did have two for a while, both in GT Silver. The other had a slightly higher mileage with a black interior and sold quite quickly to a guy here in Guernsey.

Yeah, the steering wheel in particular was very tatty. Quite why it hasn't been prepped to a better level is beyond me!
It would all clean up, but I was left wondering why it was so mucky in the first place. Couple of scratches on rear bumper from parking also.
A good detail and paint fixes would bring it up nicely. I'd also have sports exhaust high up on the shopping list also.
Jackson's aren't very good at prepping the cars in general. As someone who cares for their car it is very off putting to consider one 2nd hand when it clearly hadn't been loved by the previous owner.

Your point about Jacksons and car prep is so true. I find it almost laughable the premium prices they try and achieve when they don't make any effort to present the cars at their best. Personally I would not buy any car that was obviously not cared for given that if the visible bits are not looked after, the expensive invisible bits probably haven't been either.
I was very tempted to seek out a Spyder such as yours but few are about for sale so settled on the Boxster GTS. Never seen a Spyder in Guernsey except for a black visiting one. Is yours one of the Jersey whites?
We now have a Channel Islands forum on here. Got agreement a few weeks back. Hopefully it will gather momentum with local announcements, sales etc...

I'll look out for Channel Islands forum.
I thought one white spyder was taken off to guernsey from Jackson's in 2010. Maybe it didn't stay.
My Spyder is still the only one in Jersey as far as I am aware.

Dear all
Below is a photo album link to my 1977 Porsche 911 3.0 SC Targa that's looking for a new home. It's in excellent condition inside, outside and underneath, regularly maintained, covered only 90K miles in 37 years and looks fantastic!
http://s36.photobucket.com/user/stevepage/library/...
As you can see in the photo's, it has recently been treated to a complete new exhaust/heat exchanger system and new brake discs. The car is running perfectly, is a delight to drive fast or slow and suits the island roads well, being smaller than later 911's and with factory specified tyres that mean the alloys don't get damaged if you have to mount the kerb. The targa top stows in the boot for care free open top motoring and fits back in place with two catches.
This early, low milage 1977 SC Targa is a rare car, with very few of this period appearing in the classified ads
Feel free to forward this to anyone you think might be interested or call or email me if you have and questions.
Given it's condition, it's rarity and the desirability of early air cooled 911's, I'm looking for offers around £27500.
regards
Steve

Do you have a link for the targa with red interior? Can't seem to find it....
Google; Jackson's Jersey. It should be on their stock list. I'm not sure it comes under a Porsche UK search on their site.
Ha ha ha.. I quite like a red interior with silver exterior.
It has a fair bit of extra leather optioned also just to overdose on the red! It could be toned down with grey/black mats (a little).
Not everyone's taste, but it would be boring if every interior was just black.
Anyway, I think I'm over this particular targa idea.
Whilst I agree there's nothing wrong with a bit of interior colour (in fact I'll always endorse a coloured console) it's a shame Porsche always go OTT on the colour.
Could take a leaf out of BMW's book and just do the seats, door cards.

Was in Jersey today so dropped into Jacksons. Saw said Porsche. Leather not too bad but what happened to the inside door handles? Yup, would too 'weathered for me too''. BMW i8 was cool looking I must say.
