Just wondered if anyone can clear up as to why there is such a huge price difference for used 996 cars?

I think the pointI am trying to make or ask is, is a well loved 911 worth more than a similar normally used model when say compared to a ford or a vauxhall where the main guidance there is mileage and age?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

13 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi again-Car prices Just wondered if anyone can clear up as to why there is such a huge price difference for used 996 cars? I have seen cars advertised with similar mileage and same year plate at 10k difference? Surely this can only happen in the Porsche market? I have only had my 996 c4 cab for thre weeks but continue to love it more each day. My own car is a speed yellow cab c4 99 car with one previous owner and covered 30k from new with original sales receipt for 85k!!! now I reckon 20k would be fair as itis mint with very very low miles but the whole pricing issue does seem a strange one!!

POST 2Original post

I think the difference is some people/ dealers are being realistic and some are dreaming... The less you think about it the more fun your ownership will be :thumb:

POST 3Original post

996 values are all over the place at the moment cheapest I've seen is 11k up to someone asking 35k (yes really its on Pistonheads!) for a non facelift car I would have thought the average for a decent early car is between 15k-17k Facelifts are available from under 20k so any non facelift close to 20k would need to be something a bit special IMO Though as Stuart says as long as youre not in the position of 'having' to sell, then dont worry about it and just enjoy driving it

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

prices Agreed, I want to enjoy my car notas my sister in law has done and lost 15k on her RX8 Mazda!!!

POST 5Original post

Don't go there... :hand: Seriously though, anything is worth what someone is prepared to pay for it: Lots of people will advertise something they don't really need to sell at a very high price in the hope that they just happen to luck upon a buyer who just has to have that colour / trim / spec car, or can't be bothered to travel more than 50 miles to look at a car. The cars that are priced to actually sell are not so different to each other... If you HAD to sell your car today I doubt you would clear £20k (especially with current weather), but who knows? :?: It might just be the car of someone's dream... As others have said - best to just remember that whatever the depreciation is it's almost certainly less than anything else you could get for £20k, and just drive it!!!

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Prices I take your point, but If a a 8-10 year old 996 has had 6-8 previous owners and not a high spec etc it must reflect greatly. When looking I was told get the best car you can find which does not always mean the newest etc but the one that has been looked after. I am hoping not to have to sell, period, but you never know!!! I think the pointI am trying to make or ask is, is a well loved 911 worth more than a similar normally used model when say compared to a ford or a vauxhall where the main guidance there is mileage and age? and will not vary by much at all. Is it not the case that a truly mint car is worth much more than even a good one of the same age?

POST 7Original post

Re: prices all marques have certainly been hit hard but there is certainly a range in 911 prices

POST 8Original post

Pretty much reiterating what Wattie said but have you ever read the book 'Own and drive your dream car'? It works on the basis of always have your car for sale at a high price right from the beginning of ownership. If you try selling a car when you are desperate you will advertise it at the going rate and accept offers below but selling the car when you don't really want to at a high price, you are likely to stand by that price and make a killing. Therefore free to advertise sites like Pistonheads are not the best places to get an idea on car values, Autotrader would be best for this. There are so many other things to take into consideration, Black Silver and Grey are better sellers than Red, Yellow & Blue, (I like Speed Yellow btw) then all the specs. miles, history etc. All this could equate to the £10k variance.

POST 9Original post

Overpriced cars don't sell, they are easily identified by being on sale for months!

POST 10Original post

I kinda agree but.... watched a Silver Targa for 6 months slowly come down in price to £20K Dealership sale .. slowly reduced price. ummm black interior ... etc etc etc So "apparently" the most desirable spec! Now it has disapeared! So off to auction or someone waited till it had been droped by £5-£8 grand off the top of my head!

POST 11Original post

Or someone walked in with a cheeky offer! A few years ago my boss bought a Jag XJ off a dealer forecourt that was listed at 29k for 17k. The dealer has to weigh up the offer (plus the chance to build a relationship with a new client) against the value received at auction.... LOJO

POST 12Original post

Talking of 996 prices, does anyone else think this looks like a good buy, 996 Turbo (2002) 44,000 miles £ 29,500 incl extended warranty. http://www.911uk.com/ads_item.php?id=795

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

prices!!! ok I can see my question has got us all thinking. I love my 911 and really do not want to sell ever, so not sure why I asked it really. I still believe there are cars and cars for instance no one would want to buy a car that my wife has driven for two years, but we all seek the 911 that has been pampered well those of us that cannot afford new ones do!!! Dealers dropping ks of prices does help and yeah I think the 996 Turbo was a good buy. Ok then on another note how do you think the cabriolets compare with the coupe in terms of pricing? I can see from the guides that cabs are a little more, but these are guides written by those who probably do not know a 911 from a megane coupe!! Now I am also confused as I spoke with 5 Porsche dealers before buying my speed yellow car and four said no problemwith yellow and 1 said he had trouble shifting a yellow one a few years back so would not buy another!! The books say stick with safe colours!! What I should take from this I suppose is that there is not a simple answer just enjoy the car and make new friends
