As porscheuro says it can be fixed by someone that knows how to repair gearboxes, engine can be left in too!

Every time I am selecting first gear, as I lift the clutch, it seems like forst gear is not selected, and rattles, I then have to reselect the gear ubtil it lets me set off.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi Everyone.
I have a 2002 Porsche 996 turbo. I have one problem. Every time I am selecting first gear, as I lift the clutch, it seems like forst gear is not selected, and rattles, I then have to reselect the gear ubtil it lets me set off. I also realise that I will need a new clutch soon. However is this problem inter related? Does anybody know what the possible problem may be?
Thank you!
if i were you i would take it either to opc or your local indy for clarification of fault...
first of all if you need a clutch this is going to give you problems selcting gears..
secondly if your first gear syncro has gone you will not need a gearbox as the syncro's can be replaced ..
like i say take it to someone who deals with them day in day out for a checkover... :thumb:
Thank you for your response, much appreciated.
Does the engine need to be stripped out to check if a synchro is needed? Porche advise me they cant see the problem unless the car is stripped out with many hours of labour
However does the gear cables have anything to do with this at all?
Thanks
never had a problem with selector cables on tt...
opc are telling you it all needs to come out because the book says so..
the gearbox on the 996 tt will come out without taking the engine out just a bit fiddly on the clutch fork side of things...
But as ever - if you have to have the gearbox out - it isn't going to be cheap. And if you need a new gearset for first, you are going to need a _really_ stiff drink from what I have heard...
Don't think its as bad on a 996 as on a 993 - on a 993 you
have
to buy the gear pair (at 1300-ish for first iirc) but on the 996 they'll sell the individual gears.
Edited to say actually I bet a 996 turbo is in the same category as a 993 - didn't read the post properly ... sorry.
