Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

In the end we used 996 Turbo tips, which are nice but do look a little out of place on a C4
Leading evidence: 'Use 996 turbo tips' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'best way' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Set on ebay right now, good deal' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I am now thinking that the MK1 mod (J-pipe bypass) of my 3.4 cans is likely the best way to go.

I have a set on my 996 and they sound great with better flow.

As for street use, muffler bypass are too loud for me and perhaps illegal where I reside.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm not sure if this topic has been covered or not, but in my search for a set of 3.6 cans, I have come across a set that came from a 997. Just wondered if anyone has tried this? I know the 997s are a fair bit wider than the early 996, so even if the cans fit OK, what about the piping to the exhaust tips? I have a pic of the 997 can, and they look very similar to the 3.6 ones, but are they?
To make things more complicated, I have the following:
1999 C4 chassis
2004 3.6 X51 engine
My objective was to get a set of 3.6 cans and do the PSE MK II mod on them. I have not been able to find any 3.6 cans, and now these from a 997 have show up. I don't want to buy them until I know what I would be getting into.
I will appreciate hearing from someone who has done this, or has some first hand knowledge about it.
Thanks.

I like the Fabspeed mufflers. I have a set on my 996 and they sound great with better flow. I track my 996 and do so with muffler bypass pipes with the mufflers removed. The Cats provide some muffling quality, the weight is reduced, and the sound is much better. As for street use, muffler bypass are too loud for me and perhaps illegal where I reside.
Thanks, Fissionx. I'm looking to spend less too. Frankly, I was hoping to find a set in Canada, given the current sorry state of the $CAN. Also, if I read the ebay listing correctly, the seller is only shipping to USA destinations. At this point, the 3.4 J-pipe mod is starting to look good...

Yes they do, but you have to do several operations.
The mufflers have two pipes:
- one of them goes to be inserted into catalytic pipe. It's the one with accordion (pleat). This one it's a bit long to fit correctly but you can do it with a bit combing.
- the other one goes to the bumper hole and support the doble round tail pipes. If you don't cut it, then the pipes would appear in the centre on the bumper (like a BMW M3)
As they are from a 997 S (wider than a 996) you'll have to cut the tube as you can see in the pic, and weld a tube with a "S" figure to fit correctly in the bumper hole.
This seems to be a bit difficult but It's so easy for a welding shop.
here you have some pics:
1) Original 996 mufflers (before working)
2) Inserting muffler pipe into catalytic pipe ( a bit forced)
3) You can see the tube to be cut and the apply a S tube to fit into bumper holes
Everybody told me congratulations about the fantastic sound and the impressive rear look
I hope you understand me. If you have more dubts, just tell me.

Thanks Joaquin. Your post was very clear and I certainly understand what has to be done. I now think that this is not the way for me to go. There is the high initial cost of the 997 cans, plus the rework and fitting modifications. I am now thinking that the MK1 mod (J-pipe bypass) of my 3.4 cans is likely the best way to go. The sound is supposed to be pretty close to the 3.6 MK2 mod and the PSE, at a fraction of the cost. In any case, thanks for posting the pics as the 997 mufflers for 996 cars will be of interest to other Rennlisters for sure.

Yes the brackets fit correctly as they are placed in the same position.
The several operations done were made to fit the double round tail pipes in the 996 rear bumper, but the rest have no changes to do.
Hello,
I'm facing the same problem, trying to mount 997 S mufflers and tips into my 996 mk 2. The pictures above are no longer available and my biggest concern is: will the 997 S tips fit in 996 bumper hole (they are near 1 inch wider)?
Greetings from Warsaw, Poland.
Pawel
I recently had a 997 S PSE fitted to my 996.1 C4, and there's definitely a problem with the 997 tips not fitting the 996 bumper. In the end we used 996 Turbo tips, which are nice but do look a little out of place on a C4
Sorry for the late reply. The 997 mufflers fit the 996, but not plug and play. The pipes require modification by a muffler specialist. It took about 4 hours.
