Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

The noise was happening before full lock, I've checked the easily checkable things, but as alot of pipework is covered its pretty tough, made a call to local Indy this morning:

Thanks for the info, Indy recons it needs hi/lo pressure pipes replaced (slight drip between metal/rubber connection) along with air con pipe a stone must have flicked up on the way there and split it, :x anyway total bill expected to be about £1200 when done.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi everyone,
I have another 996 that has sat for a couple of weeks, went for a blast on sunday and got alot of noise from the steering on lock, checked hydraulic oil, put about 250ml in to top up, left it for a couple of days and it needed a splash more today.. it's obvously dissapearing somewhere... any ideas?
no noticable leaks, tricky to see with the undertrays in place, any known usual faults or tips?
Thanks! :thumb:
Was the noise on full lock? If yes this is not unusual because the fluid pressure needs to be dumped back through the pressure relief valve.
Start checking the pipework first from the reservoir to the pump and the pump to the steering rack. Also check the pump ,may be seals dried out a bit whilst standing. In general pipes dont last for ever, watch out for changes from metal to rubber and the connnections into the pump and rack bodies. Also check the valve chest on the rack for oil leaks.
Regards Big Bob
Cheers Big Bob,
The noise was happening before full lock, I've checked the easily checkable things, but as alot of pipework is covered its pretty tough, made a call to local Indy this morning:
Could be:
Pump seal
Rack leak
or pipe, was told the usual one to leak is from right behind front wheel, looks ok on full lock but abit cold to be poking around it too long!
Anyway moved it this morning and seems ok again, gonna try and get it to the indy later
Thanks

If it's the main rack seal then you may wish to consider sticking this stuff in as it worked wonders on my 993 and saved me a fortune. Had it in now for a year and no problems at all with a 50/50 mix.
It works by putting a lining on the edge of the seal - clearly if it's gushing out you may need a new rack(or your current one refurbished).
It may not be for everyone(use at your own risk) but I tried it before going down the new rack/re-seal route. :thumb:
The "magic" potion supplied by STP is seal sweller. It contains a chemical that causes hardened/heated and shrunken oil seals to become more pliable.
I have used it for many years on all sorts of cars with slight steering fluid leakage and have found it to stop or reduce the leak in every case.
I dont know of a down side to using this product and it's been around for ages, although I'm sure an OPC would insist you replace the part that is leaking.
A lot depends on your understanding of the problem and the depth of your pocket. :?:
Thanks for the info, Indy recons it needs hi/lo pressure pipes replaced (slight drip between metal/rubber connection) along with air con pipe a stone must have flicked up on the way there and split it, :x anyway total bill expected to be about £1200 when done.
Is it worth trying the STP fluid?, I'm losing approx 100-200ml across 24-48hrs or should I just bite the bullet, could do without the spend at the mo tbh and I can live without AC!
Cheers
